The 2016 Yunlin International Puppet Theater Festival will kick off this Saturday at the Agricultural Expo Park in the county''s Huwei District, with six full days of puppet shows across multiple stages. 4 overseas puppet theater groups from Russia, Japan and Hong Kong will join local puppet masters in performing at the annual event. This dancer, one of those set to take the stage at Yunlin’s upcoming International Puppet Theater Festival, is something of a puppet fan-turned cosplayer. Puppet Theater FanI kind of want to combine cosplay and puppet theater to make a new type of performance. At a press conference promoting the event, puppetmaster Huang Chun-hsiung gave the media a taste of his skills in narration.Aside from showcasing the refined talent of Taiwan’s own puppet theater troupes, the six-day long festival will also feature troupes from overseas.Lee Chin-YungYunlin County CommissionerWe’ve invited four international puppet theater troupes from Russia, Hong Kong, and Japan. With them and our own local puppeteers, we’ll have a total of 113 performances. Troupes from local schools are also set to join the many professional puppeteers scheduled to perform at the event, in what will surely be an unmissable week of shows for the nation’s puppet theater fans.

Traditional glove puppetry (Budaixi)
掌中乾坤 傳統布袋戲
Glove puppetry is also known as Budaixi, and can usually be seen as part of temple activities for festivals or deity birthdays.
There are two parts to a glove puppetry (Budaixi) performance: the puppeteer performs on stage, while musicians play backstage, using music to control the atmosphere.
Although many new types of puppet theater have emerged, including large scale, flamboyant glove puppetry, which has an army of loyal fans, the small and exquisite form of Traditional glove puppetry (Budaixi) is still one of the most representative forms of Taiwanese folk art.

Dodgy parking, people cutting me off, blindly pulling out in front of me, running intersections ... and that's a quiet night, in a small town. Go Taiwan !! The nation of clueless drivers. No wonder the public transport system is so awesome.

The Taiwanese puppeteers who appear in this video are (in order of appearance):
Master Chong Jen-pi (鍾任壁)
A-Zon Chen Han-zon (阿-忠)
Master Huang Shih-chin (黃世志)

The art of Taiwanese glove puppetry (Budaixi)
臺灣布袋戲工藝之美
Glove puppetry, or Taiwanese puppetry (Budaixi) was an important part of early folk activities in Taiwan. It is a combination of traditional wood-carving, embroidery, music and literature. The superb craftsmanship of the carved puppet heads, the costumes’ embroidery and accessories make all the puppets works of art.
The puppet heads are carved from camphor wood. The difficult process starts with marking the positions of the facial features, such as eyes and nose. Next is the carving of the features, then laminating and covering with loess. The laminating and loess-coating process needs to be repeated 5 to 10 times to get rid of blemishes and to make painting easier. The painting stage is done with Chinese calligraphy brushes. The last stage to complete the heads is to apply a coat of clear paint and then add the wig, head accessories and beard.
