some of the most fantastic scenary when we viewed this glacier. The ice lagoon was stunning , although the weather was dull and raining it did not detract from the fantastic sights, especially the icebergs that had been washed up onto the black beach.
With an area of 8,100 km², Vatnajökull is the largest ice cap in Europe by volume (3,100 km³) and the second largest (after Austfonna on Nordaustlandet, Norway) in area (not counting the still larger Severny Island ice cap of Novaya Zemlya, Russia, which may be regarded as located in the extreme northeast of Europe). On 7 June 2008, it became a part of the Vatnajökull National Park.
The average thickness of the ice is 400 m (1,300 ft), with a maximum thickness of 1,000 m (3,300 ft). Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur (2,109.6 m (6,921 ft)), is located in the southern periphery of Vatnajökull, near Skaftafell National Park.
Jökulsárlón (About this sound Icelandic pronunciation (help·info); literally glacial river lagoon) is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers. It is now 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq mi). It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 248 metres (814 ft), as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The size of the lake has increased fourfold since the 1970s It is considered as one of the natural wonders of Iceland.
Jökulsárlón has been a setting for four Hollywood movies: A View to a Kill, Die Another Day, Tomb Raider and Batman Begins, as well as the reality TV series Amazing Race. In 1991 Iceland issued a postage stamp, with a face value of 26 kronur, depicting Jökulsárlón.
Alongside the Svinafellsjokull glacier in Iceland. This is one of many 'tongues' of the largest glacier in the country, Vatnajokull. This particular tongue drops precipitously down into a valley and ends in a small glacial lake, littered with ice boulders.

Vatnajökull

Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe covering 8% of the island of Iceland. Vatnajökull National Park - which encompasses the earlier national parks of Skaftafell and Jökulsárgljúfur - is the largest protected area in Europe and believed by many to be the most beautiful place on earth.
In this area you'll find some of the most stunning and diverse sights in Iceland. Among those are Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, its most active volcano, Grímsvötn, beautiful waterfalls such as Svartifoss by Skaftafell and Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, stunning canyons such as Jökulsargljúfur and Ásbyrgi, and the breathtaking Jökulsárlon, an ice-riddled glacier lagoon that is one of the most beautiful attractions in Iceland.
The glacier itself covers a surface area of about 100 km2. The thickness of the ice is generally around 400-600 meters, at its thickest around 950 meters. Under the glacier are valleys, mountains and plateuas as well as active volcanoes, most notably Grimsvotn and Bardarbunga, both the largest and most active of these. Then there are Esjufjoll, a glorious volcanic mountain island, surrounded by the glacier on all sides.
Vatnajokull has over 30 outlets, some of the major ones being Dyngjujokull and Bruarjokull to the north and Breidamerkurjokull, Oraefajokull, Skeidararjokull and Sidujokull towards the south. On the west side from the north are smaller glaciers Eyjabakkajokull, Hofsjokull, Flaajokull Heinabergsjokull and Skalafellsjokull.
The highest peak of Iceland then lies to the south, Hvannadalshnjukur in the Oraefajokull outlet, reaching 2109 m, according to latest measurements.

[Beautiful Iceland Series Part Six]
Hvannadalshnúkur or Hvannadalshnjúkur is a pyramidal peak on the northern western rim of the summit crater of the largest active volcano in the country, Öræfajökull in Iceland. At the highest peak in Iceland at 6,920 ft (2,110 metres). Geographically speaking, Öræfajökull is considered part of Vatnajökull, and the area covered by glacier is within the boundary of Vatnajökull National Park. Oræfajökull is located in the extreme south east of Iceland only a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean and can be views by pacers by on Route 1 and assess off this road at Svinafellsjokulsvegur.
Öræfajökull has erupted twice in it recorded history. In 1362, the volcano erupted explosively, with huge amounts of tephra being ejected. The district of Litla-Hérað was destroyed by floods and tephra fall. More than 40 years passed before people again settled the area, which became known as Öræfi. The name literally means 'an area without harbour', but it took on a meaning of 'wasteland' in Icelandic. An eruption in August 1727-28 was smaller, though floods are known to have caused three fatalities in his eruption.
For visitors wishing to stay by this volcano there is an adventure camp, Skaftafell, which is a part that houses camping families, hiking trails and other beautiful views and sights to behold.

Iceland, (Icelandic: Ísland) is a mountainous island nation in the north Atlantic Ocean, located between Europe and North America. Though not part of the continental mainland, the country is considered Nordic European. The name of the country—Iceland—may not be that appropriate: although 10% of Iceland is covered by glaciers, it has a surprisingly mild climate and countless geothermal hot-spots and hot springs. The native spelling (Ísland) is appropriate in English as well. Tipping isn't done in Iceland and driving off-road is illegal and destroys the nature.
Iceland is a stunningly beautiful place if you enjoy strange and desolate landscapes. The amount of daylight varies dramatically by season. The sun sets briefly each night in June, but it doesn't get fully dark before it comes back up again. In the March and September equinoxes, days and nights are of about equal length, as elsewhere in the world. If you go in December, it's almost 20 hours of darkness. Summer is definitely the best time to go, and even then the tourist traffic is still mild. The midnight sun is a beautiful sight and one definitely not to be missed. It is easy to lose track of time when the sun is still up at 23:00. Early or late winter, however, can be surprisingly good times to visit. In late January, daylight is from about 10:00-17:00, prices are lower than in the high season, and the snow-blanketed landscape is eerily beautiful. (Some sites are, however, inaccessible in the winter).
Cities and towns
Reykjavik (REYG-ya-veeg) — the capital of Iceland and is the largest city
Akureyri (Ahk-oo-rey-ree) — capital of the North and the largest town outside the Southwest
Egilsstaðir (AY-yell-stath-er) — main town in the East, has some of the best weather Iceland has to offer
Hafnarfjörður (HAP-nar-FYERTH-er) — cosy town on the outskirts of the capital region
Höfn (HERP'n) — main town on the southeastern coast
Húsavík (HOOS-ah-veek) — one of the world's most reliable whale watching sites during the summer
Keflavik (KEP-la-veek) — the location of the international airport, but also an interesting town in its own right
Ísafjörður (EES-ah-FYERTH-er) — biggest town of the West fjords of Iceland
Selfoss (SEL-fos) — South Iceland's largest town, hub of the main agricultural region
Stykkishólmur (STICK-is-hole-mur) — Main town on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, gateway to the islands of Breiðafjörður
Seyðisfjörður (SEY-ths-fjorth-ur) — A town and municipality in the Eastfjords of Iceland
Vestmannaeyjar (Vest-manna-ayhjar) — A cluster of islands and town and municipality in the south of Iceland
Vík (Veek) — A small village close to the Reynisfjara Beach, commonly known as the Black Sand Beach
It's a shame most visitors don't stray far from the capital as some of the most memorable sights in Iceland are further afield. There are many excursions offered by tour companies, readily available from any of the main centres such as Reykjavík and Akureyri. They will fly you around and take you out to the glaciers and to the big volcanoes for a reasonable price. However, the cheapest option is to drive around with a rented car since none of these sites have entry fees.
National Parks
Þingvellir National Park (pronounced THING-vet-lihr) - National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage site 30-50km (20-30 mi) east of Reykjavík. Interesting for a number of reasons: Not only is it the original site of the longest running parliament in the world (the name literally means 'parliamentary fields'), it's also where the North-American and European continental shelf plates are being torn apart.
Vatnajökull National Park (VAT-nah-yer-CUDDLE) - Iceland's newest national park was founded on 7 June 2008 and includes the former Skaftafell and Jokulsargljufur National Parks. Vatnajökull National Park is Europe's largest national park at 12,000km², covering about 12 percent of the surface of Iceland. The park is home to Iceland's highest mountain, Hvannadalshnúkur, largest glacier, Vatnajökull, and Europe's largest waterfall in terms of volume discharge, Dettifoss.
Snæfellsjökull National Park (SNY-fetls-yer-CUDDLE) - Located on the tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland, this park is home to the ice-covered volcanic crater that was the setting for Jules Verne's book Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Gönguskíðaferð á Öræfajökli - XC ski trip in Iceland
English below

These pictures are from a three day cross country ski tour on the Öræfajökull glacier, the highest part of the mighty Vatnajökull glacier and the highest part of Iceland. We put up base camp next to Hvannadalshnjúkur, Iceland's highest peak and skied to and climbed most of the peaks found on Öræfajökull. The weather was superb, no wind and clear sunny skies with temperatures between 0 and 10°C during the day. Excellent trip.

03:09 Dverghamrar (Dwarf Rocks) are incredible and beautiful formations of columnar basalt. This landscape is thought to have been moulded at the end of the Ice Age: the sea level was higher at that time and it is believed that the waves caused the peculiar look of the rocks. Columnar basalt is formed when lava flow gets cooled and contraction forces build up. Cracks then form horizontally and the extensive fracture network that develops results in the six sided formation of the columns.
04:25 Vatnajökull, meaning Glacier of Rivers or Glacier of Waters, with an area of 8,100 km², is the largest ice cap in Europe by volume, 3,100 km³. The average thickness of the ice is 400 m, with a maximum thickness of 1,000 m. Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur (2,110 m), is located in the southern periphery of Vatnajökull, near Skaftafell National Park. Under the ice cap there are several volcanoes. The volcanic lakes, Grímsvötn for example, were the sources of a large jökulhlaup (glacial lake outburst flood) in 1996. There was also a considerable but short-time eruption of the volcano under these lakes at the beginning of November 2004. In May 21, 2011 a volcanic eruption started in Grímsvötn. The plume reached as high as 20 kilometres.
04:53 Lómagnúpur is a prominent 688 m high and precipitous promontory, nearly 500 m vertical cliffs, on the south coast of Iceland. Like other promontories of the south coast, Lómagnúpur was a headland during the Ice Age.

Skeiðarársandur is the largest sandur in the world, covering an area of 1300 km², and volcanic eruptions under the icecap have given rise to many glacial bursts, jökulhlaup in Icelandic.

Welcome to the world of fantasy.
Iceland is a magical land, and ice caves are a fantasy world.
According to the volume of ice, the Vatnajökull glacier is the largest in Europe, and on the territory - the third (after the glacier of the North Island and the glacier of Eastfonne).
Here are our magical caves.
The average ice thickness is 400 m, the maximum is 1000 m. The highest point of Iceland, the peak of Hwannadalschnukur (2,110 m), is located on the southern outskirts of Vatnajökull, near the national park of Skaftafedl.

Öræfajökull, ice-covered volcano in south-east Iceland
Öræfajökull (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈœːraivaˌjœːkʏtl̥]) is an ice-covered volcano in south-east Iceland, at the southern extremity of the Vatnajökull glacier and overlooking the Ring Road between Höfn and Vík. It is the largest active volcano in the country, and on the summit crater's north-western rim is Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest peak in Iceland at 2,110 metres (6,920 ft). Geographically, Öræfajökull is considered part of Vatnajökull, and the area covered by glacier is within the boundary of Vatnajökull National Park.
Öræfajökull has erupted twice in historical times. In 1362, the volcano erupted explosively, with huge amounts of tephra being ejected. The district of Litla-Hérað was destroyed by floods and tephra fall. More than 40 years passed before people again settled the area, which became known as Öræfi. The name literally means an area without harbour, but it took on a meaning of wasteland in Icelandic. An eruption in August 1727-28 was smaller, though floods are known to have caused three fatalities.
Increased earthquake activity in the form small tremors ranging from a depth of 1.5 - 10 km beneath the summit crater, began in August of 2017 according to the Iceland Met Office.

Iceland by bike - Waterfalls/Wodospady
A poetic, lonesome travel round Iceland with a tent, which I took in 2011 after 8 months' preparations.
The aim of the journey was to travel round Iceland on a bike with a trailer with own food reserves (probably the first tour of this kind) and to climb on biggest glacier in Europe (Vatnajökull) and reach the highest summit Hvannadalshnúkur -- 2119 mamsl.
All became recorded with an amateur digital camera. The videos were arranged by a subject matter.
Iceland is notorious for its specifically strong winds and adverse weather conditions. It's the latest area of European continent, it's rich in record number of 127 volcanoes, 13 glaciers, largest waterfall, vastest desert and dam in Europe.
The voyage lasted 55 days, the weight of the luggage amounted to 130 kg. Daily burn of calories fluctuated between 2 thous. to 9 thous. Maximum time spent on bike a day was 14 hours. Longest distance covered by me in one day equals 160 km, which corresponds to (speaking of me) about 300 km ride on a flat surface without baggage.
The distance covered equals 2020 km on a slightly mountainous terrain only. The walking distance taken by me amounted to additional 200 km.
The plan was fulfilled, and I decided to travel also through the biggest desert in Europe, so to speak to enter into the most demanding part of the island -- the Interior -- as well as Iceland mountains ( Highlands of Iceland ).
Iceland does not boast infrastructure for bike travels, and the distances between shops and agglomeration of citizens frequently exceed 100 km.
The expedition proved to be a test on how big an amount of food I am able to take for travel in subarctic climate (northern part of Iceland) as well as on the preparation to subsequent, longer solitary travels, It's the one and only, primal, pure in its form way to discover oneself.
This expedition is dedicated to all people I met on the island and in Iceland itself. I am thankful to volcanic roads for letting me through, to round-the-clock Iceland sun for wrapping me up, and to wind for innerving me.

______________________________________________________
Film podzielono tematycznie.
Przejechany dystans to 2020 km w terenie prawie wyłącznie lekko górzystym.
