The sites around Lake Mývatn in Northern Iceland are unique from the rest of the country. Other than being around millions of flies, during our self-guided one day road trip tour, we explored Grjótagjá Thermal Spring, Hverfjall Crater, Dimmuborgir Volcanic Caves and Rock Formations, Hofdi Lava Pillars, Skútustadagígar Pseudocraters and ended our day soaking in the Mývatn Nature Baths (the Blue Lagoon of the North).

Where is Lake Myvatn located?
Lake Myvatn is located in Northern Iceland. It is 97 km/60 mi east of Iceland’s “Capital of the North”, Akureyri, and 475 km/295 mi northeast of Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.

How long does it take to tour the sites around Lake Myvatn?
This is dependent on how much you will explore each site. We recommend the following minimum/maximum times for each site:
Grjótagjá – 30 min/1.5 hours
Hverfjall – 1 hour/2 hours
Dimmuborgir – 45 min/2.5 hours
Hofdi – – 20 min/1 hour
Skútustadagígar – 15 min/1 hour
Nature Baths – 30 min/3 hours
How should you tour Myvatn Lake?
Each of these places are easily accessible via car. They all have parking lots and most have informational signs at the start of the site (see below). At Grjótagjá, you will need to climb down some rocks to see the thermal springs but the water is too hot to bathe. You must be able to climb a hill to view the top. At Hverfjall, you will need to hike up a dirt incline. Dimmuborgir and Hofdi have easy dirt walking paths. Skútustadagígar also has easy walking paths but you may have to walk up tiny hills to see the inside of the psuedocraters. It is really easy to enter the Myvatn Nature Baths but can be slippery in some areas.
When should you visit Lake Myvatn?
This area boasts some of Iceland’s best weather during the summer months and is one of the coldest areas during the winter. In winter time, the roads are subject to closure so keep that in mind.

Highly recommend a fly net to cover your face if you plan on visiting the sites close to the lake. See the black spots in that picture? Those are flies! Visit the Mývatn Nature Baths at the end of your day to recover from touring all the sites. Hverfjall, Dimmuborgir and Skútustadagígar have absolutely no shaded areas so wear proper sun protection. Similar to everywhere else in Iceland, wear layers!

ICELAND: Námafjall & Mývatn

Námafjall is a high-temperature geothermal area with fumaroles and boiling mud pools. At a depth of 1000 meters the temperature is above 200 degrees C. As is characteristic for other hot spring areas
there is a hot spring smell at Námafjall which is caused by the steam and the fumarole gas, such as hydrogen sulfide.
Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters).

Iceland Vlog: Day 6 (Hverir, Grjotagja Cave, Hverfjall Crater, Myvatn Lake & Nature Baths)
Welcome to day 6 of our amazing Iceland trip!
Day 6:
- We spent the first part of the morning doing some washing and general camping stuff.
- Then we headed off to Hverir (a spectacular area of mud pots, fumaroles and sulphur deposits) we climbed Namafjall Mountain to get the amazing views of the surrounding area.
- We went on to our next spot, the great Grjotagja cave, and climbed down inside, there is a hot river pool there, but it is a bit too hot to bathe in.
- Then we went to Hverfjall volcano crater and walked up to the top, the views are amazing and the crater is immense.
- After that we headed to Dimmuborgir, an area of volcanic rock formations, where there are paths to walk through the lava field.
Just a 10 min drive away from all of the above is the famous Myvatn Lake, which is well known for its annoying mosquitos, but we were lucky, as there weren´t any around. We went to a few lookout areas but our favourites were Hofdi and Skutustadagigar.
- Our final stop was the Myvatn Nature Baths, naturally heated thermal pools with brilliant views of the lake, it was quite expensive, 40 euros per person, but a great way to end the day and a typical Iceland experience.

Day 23. - 25.
We spent three days in the area of the lake Mývatn. There are craters, various lava formations, geothermal areas and mosquitos...lot of them :D.
Hverfjall / Hverfell volcano near Myvatn lake and Grjotagja cave in Iceland - drone aerial
Just five minutes drive from the lake Myvath is one of the most famous in the world of circular craters - Hverfjall volcano.
Hverfjall volcano is high at 452 m asl and 1,030 meters wide. This type of circular craters are rare in the whole world. Practically perfect a round shape is disturbed by the landslide, which was founded on its southern edge, most likely during the eruption. The outbreak has covered the volcanic dust and small terfrą whole area of Myvatn
Hverfjall also called Hverfell, now is considered to be extinct, the last eruption took place here about 2500 years ago. Climbing the volcano we will see a beautiful and diverse panorama, just look in the opposite direction to feel like we were in a completely different place. Particularly noteworthy Dimmuborgir (isl. Dark city). Fancifully black rock formations were formed about 2,000 years ago by lava flowing from the surrounding craters. The most famous is the cave Kirkjan (isl. Church). According to folk beliefs in Dimmuborgir appeared elves, trolls, and even creatures of evil.
During the colonization of the island, magma flowing from Svortuborgir located on the southern end of the mountain Namafjall almost completely surrounded the volcano. At the same time there was an explosion on the slopes Dalfall.
Following the route 848, you will reach the parking lot at the foot of the volcano, which leads straight trail finish its peak. Entering the crater is also possible with the other party, but the route is difficult. Climbing takes 10 to 20 minutes depending on the condition. A giant crater can walk around, available only to its bed measuring 140 meters. Full excursion along circling the crater should not take longer than 90 minutes.

Myvatn lake : north Iceland ( famous lake of fies ) - Drone Iceland
One of the main attractions of the north is famous lake Myvatn, located at a distance of about 55 kilometers south of the town of Husavik. It is also the fourth largest lake in Iceland, a place that you must see.
Its name (isl. my - the mosquito or fly + Vatn - lake) means lake flies which almost perfectly reflects the character of this place. Ubiquitous near the lake insects can drive a man to despair. If you're going to admire these beautiful lands you must obtain a special protective nets worn over the head. It can be purchased on nearby petrol stations.
The lake was created about 35,000 years ago, it covers its surface area thirty-seven kilometers square. The average depth of the lake is 2.5 meters and the deepest point reaches up to four and a half meters. The water in the lake is rich in minerals and algae, which means that it takes blue-green hues. The transparency of the water allows you to see the rich vegetation and fish among the seaweed. Surface of a lake is filled with dozens of small islands and the coast grow pseudo-craters called Skútustaðagígar formed during the explosion gases. In 1974. The area around the lake has been strictly protected, and these pseudo-craters were considered monuments.
Interestingly is that, the water in the lake never freezes completely, despite the fact that it is located just 100 kilometers from the Arctic Circle. This is due to the nearby active volcanoes, geothermal and lava fields.
Myvatn is an ideal place for bird watching, Shores of the lake is home to many species of waterfowl. In summer you can meetings largest population of ducks, more than 16 different species, whose numbers even exceeds 150,000 individuals. In addition to ducks you can meet geese, białozory, whooper swans, curlews, snipe, golden plover and białorzytki and 76 other species that are turning out to be spot on. While migratory birds are represented here by nearly 240 different species. In winter you can see the whooper swans (Cygnus Cygnus)
From May 20 to July 20 on part of the land within the lake entry is prohibited, due to the breeding season of birds.

Today I visited the Awesome Lava Caves, experience the strongest winds I ever had in Iceland, stopping ever so often for the spectecular ladnscape along the way and witnessingthe awesome power of the Godafoss. It was an emotional roller coastal drive !
