Walk around Suwon Hwaseong Fortress & Palace (UNESCO Heritage) | Travel Vlog |
#Hwaseongfortress#Suwon#SouthKorea
Welcome to Seoul Duo TV channel !
This episode I went to the beautiful historical military installation in Suwon, South Korea.
It's Suwon Hwaseong Fortress !
Not so far from Seoul. (40 -60 mins)
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress is listed in UNESCO World Heritage place in 1997.
22nd King of Joseon Dynasty, Jeongjo, he wanted to move his father’s tomb to a better place, and wanted to build a new town.
(Joseon Dynasty which has about 500 years of history is really important part of Korean history.)
And he chose Suwon to build Hwaseong Temporary Palace to worship his father, showing the respect.
And he ordered to build Suwon Hwaseong Fortress to protect the palace and south part of Seoul.
Its circumference is 5.7km long, and it’s 1/16 size of palace areas in Seoul.
The fortress area along the fortress walls, there are lots of up and down hills, so it's going to be interesting walk.
Thanks for watching.

Summer Day Trip from Seoul to Suwon (Hwaseong Fortress) | Life in Korea VLOG
Hi guys! A while ago I FINALLY took the bus down from Seoul to Suwon to see the Hwaseong Fortress. I was asked by @travelgram_korea (the Korean Tourism Organization) to introduce the city on their Instagram Stories so apologies if I sound a little tour-guidey here lol! But really, this was such a nice day trip and if you couldn't tell, I thought the part of the city I explored was GORGEOUS. If you have a free day and are looking for a day trip, I highly suggest Suwon (but the palace was a lil freaky haha)

수원 - Walking around Suwon(Feat. 수원화성 - Hwaseong Fortress), Gyeonggi-do, Korea (Per Request)
Suwon (Korean: 수원; Hanja: 水原, Korean pronunciation: [su.wʌn]) is the capital and largest metropolis of Gyeonggi-do, South Korea's most populous province which surrounds Seoul, the national capital. Suwon lies about 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Seoul. It is traditionally known as The City of Filial Piety. With a population close to 1.2 million, it is larger than Ulsan, although it is not governed as a metropolitan city.
Suwon has existed in various forms throughout Korea's history, growing from a small settlement to become a major industrial and cultural center. It is the only remaining completely walled city in South Korea. The city walls are one of the more popular tourist destinations in Gyeonggi Province. Samsung Electronics R&D center and headquarters are in Suwon. The city is served by two motorways, the national railway network, and the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. Suwon is a major educational center, home to 11 universities.
Suwon is home to football club Suwon Samsung Bluewings, which have won the K League on four occasions and AFC Champions League twice. The KT Wiz of the Korea Baseball Organization also plays in Suwon.
Hwaseong Fortress or Suwon Hwaseong is a fortification surrounding the centre of Suwon, the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, in South Korea. It was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty to house and honour the remains of his father, Prince Sado. Sado had been executed by being locked alive inside a rice chest by his own father King Yeongjo after failing to obey a command to commit suicide. Located 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of Seoul and enclosing much of central Suwon, the fortress includes King Jeongjo's palace Haenggung. The site was designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. Suwoncheon, the main stream in Suwon, flows through the center of the fortress.

Korea Vlog: Suwon Hwaseong Fortress + Korean BBQ/수원 화성 앤 갈비
It was my first time visiting the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress outside of Seoul and I loved it so much!
Suwon is famous for Galbi (Korean BBQ/grilled ribs) apparently because the area was given permission to serve beef during the Joseon dynasty to feed workers who were working on building the Hwaseong Fortress.
The history behind why the fortress was built in the first place is interesting! Check it out:

Grand beauty of Hwaseong Fortress
유네스코 문화유산, 수원 화성
Hwaseong Fortress attracts thousands of local and global visitors everyday.
More than just a marvel that demand praise for its extraordinary beauty, it served as an effective means of defense... as well as a royal family's sanctuary during the Joseon Dynasty era.
Lee Un-shin, takes us to the stonewalls in Suwon
It's a structure that connects the mountains to the flatland, a wall of stones that protects a village, and a military stronghold that guarded a kingdom.
This is Hwaseong Fortress.
Located in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do province, the fortress was built more than 2-hundred years ago during the Joseon Dynasty by King Jeongjo in a show of respect for his late father.
Straddling Mount Paldal , these majestic walls lead to four uniquely designed gates that guard what was once a village inside.
Beyond the gates, there are a number of facilities, including Hwaseong Haenggung palace, where the royal family took shelter during the war.
Eager tourists gather at the palace's front gate, where the Jangyongyeong guard ceremony is held.
Soldiers were stationed around Hwaseong Haenggung palace, practicing these moves to guard it during the Joseon Dynasty. Our performance showcases some of the ground martial arts among the 24 techniques. The show is really popular.
Visitors can also try their hand at archery practice, further helping them understand the significance of this remarkable place.
It's easy to get carried away by the recreational activities and the place's grand beauty, but like anything else that has stood the test of time, the fortress also reflects the scars of a bitter past.
Hwaseong Fortress has endured countless turbulances over the years. And it was most damaged during the Korean War. But the restoration initiave that started in the 1970s brought most of the fortress back to its former glory.
The fortress is designated as a Unesco World Heritage Site... and is one of Korea's historical monuments.
These are grand designations, and fitting for such a historical structure, but for area residents, this enchanted place means something even more.
I feel as if the foretress is telling me a long-lost tale. To me, it's more than a cultural treasure, it's almost part of my life, and what keeps me grounded every day.
Built to honor a beloved parent and defend the nation, and now treasured as a sanctuary, the captivating Hwaseong Fortress... is sure to be adored as one of Suwon's main attractions for years to come.

Suwon Hwaseong (South Korea) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Suwon Hwaseong in South Korea.
The Hwaseong Fortress is the most famous historic site in South Korea and the centre of Suwon, a city with a population of around a million, is dominated by the impressive looking fortress. The twenty-second monarch of the Korean Joseon Dynasty, King Jeongjo, ordered the construction of the complex in 1794.It is like a large open air museum and measures a hundred and thirty hectares, its walls extending for five kilometres. Indeed, the unique value of the fortress has been recognised by Unesco who have designated it as a World Heritage Site. A walk through the fortress could take several hours but it is well worth making the time to enjoy the splendour of the buildings. The majestic towers of Hwaseong continue to rise proudly into the sky above Suwon as a noble landmark of the city and also the Joseon Dynasty.

From the visitkorea.or.kr: Introduction
Hwaseong Fortress is an impressive structure from the latter part of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) and the official fortress of Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. The fortress, constructed from 1794 to 1796, was built as a display of King Jeongjo’s filial piety towards his father and to build a new pioneer city with its own economic power.
The fortress wall stretches for a total of 5.52km and has a great variety of military facilities that are hard to find anywhere else. Four gates face each of the cardinal directions—Janganmun (north), Paldalmun (south), Changnyongmun (east), and Hwaseomun (west)—and the seven-arch style Sumun gates straddle the point where the nearby stream reaches the palace. Above the Sumun gates is a pavilion called Hwahongmun.
Hwaseong Fortress was constructed under the guidance of Yu Hyeong-Won (1622-1673) and Jeong Yak-Yong (1762-1836), and is believed to have been constructed very scientifically. The fortress wall was built using Seokjae and Jeondol (bricks) and the holes between the bricks are just big enough to fire guns, arrows, or long spears through in case of an attack.
During construction of the fortress Jeong Yak-Yong invented ‘Geojunggi,’ which uses a ‘hwalcha’ (lever) to lift up heavy stones, greatly reducing construction time.
The Suwon Hwaseong Fortress went through many turbulent times and damage, and in the battle of June 25th, many of the facilities became so damaged that they were deemed irreparable. Even though the fortress restoration initiative (1975-1979) restored many of the sites to their former glory, Paldalmun to Dongnamgakru (an area 491 meters in length) has still not been renovated.
The fortress was designated as Historic Site No. 3 in January 1963, and in December 1997, it was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. A variety of performances and events are held at the fortress every day and Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival takes place here in autumn.
