Martin Luther King I have a dream mural in Newtown
The well known mural in King St, Newtown is impressive. However it is incongruous in the sense that this iconic American figure is represented in the context of Australian politics.

I Have a dream - The Making of a Mural
The Martin Luther King mural in Newtown, Sydney, is one of the most iconic and recognisable pieces of street art in Australia. What is less well known are the circumstances surrounding its making. This documentary goes back to those heady days and speaks to some of those involved at the time, including artist Juilee Pryor.

I Have A Dream : The Making of A Mural is the incredible story of the making of the Martin Luther King mural in Newtown, Sydney.
Description
This documentary is about an unlikely partnership between two mismatched visual artists; a 3 storey mural created in the dead of night using stolen paint and a borrowed cherry-picker; and an illegal artwork that became Newtown's unofficial symbol, standing at the gateway to Sydney's Inner West. King Street's Martin Luther King mural has endured for 20 years and, despite its origin as grafitti, i...t has won a permanent place in the hearts of the locals who identify with its message of tolerance.
It's the story of how street artists Andrew Aiken (a foreigner, committed christian and murderer on the run) and Juilee Pryor (alternative artist and single mother, struggling on the poverty line) created a series of remarkable murals that changed the urban landscape in Erskineville and King street in the 1990s, including the iconic Martin Luther King.
The documentary is nearly finished, and will have its first screening at the end of May. We are hoping to also sell it as an acquisition to TV broadcasters in Australia and overseas, as well as screen it in film festivals.

Mural Launch June 2013
The Chapel By The Sea Bondi Beach has launched a significant Street Art Mural, celebrating Social Justice for Indigenous Australians. The mural recognises five leading figures in that struggle. That journey continues today with the campaign for the recognition of Indigenous people in the Constitution of Australia.
The artists Etienne Cohen and Paul Davis have been on a journey too! Their collaboration has shown that with respect we can share, yarn and create together, we are reconciled to a brighter future for all Australians.
The launch is well timed as Australia Post will be bringing out a series of stamps for NAIDOC week also honouring Indigenous Elders.
This mural is the third in a series of social justice murals supported by Uniting Churches, the others being I have a Dream in King St Newtown and The Peace Unity & Justice murals in the Sydney city centre.

A short segment of this slightly controversial documentary will air on ABC TV 1 Wednesday 13 9.30pm on Shock Horror Aunty
The reason I'm putting this up, is we're having a screening at Petersham Bowling club. It was the first Spontaneous Production. It's like a different world - even though it's not that long ago. Just at the cusp of Newtown's gentrification.
Date, Time and Location -- Tuesday 28th August 7.30 p.m. Petersham Bowling Club 77 Brighton St.
you do have to join but it doesn't cost much.

The inspiration were the students. Once they graduate in their chosen field, they’ll have their wings & the skies will be their limits!
While painting the mural, the community spirit surrounding the artwork was overwhelming.

Maurice Franco - The Canvas Project Ep 5
Maurice Franco began his spiritual and artistic journey at the age of sixteen, starting with the desire to know the truth of life. Spending the last three years painting in front of the I Have a Dream mural on Newtown's King Street, Maurice Franco shares a certain affinity with the space in which he paints what he describes as the volcanic power of creation. Canvas caught up with the man behind the paintings, and it's really not easy to express in so short a space the immense and sublime cosmic philosophy of Maurice Franco.

Lyrics: The Newtown Song
I get to sleep in today
how I love my holiday
have some toast with strawberry jam
try and make myself look glam
I take myself up to King Street
People there are weird but sweet,
Oh the things you'll see
Goodness Gracious me
Looking for Dave selling Big Issues by the street cafe,
stop and have a chat you know he'll ask you to
Lend me your ear won't you - that's what Newtown people do
it's kind of like the country, breathin' in the city - come on down
Come on down to Newtown, come on down
There's politics in the air
say your peace but don't you stare
Feel the sun upon your face, feed the busker's blue guitar case
Shaved heads, pierced noseys, I say life is kinda rosy
Oh the things you'll see
Goodness Gracious me
Night time's happening at the Sando, bands are pumpin' at the Marlborough,
find yourself a dancing treat, you can find it here on King Street
How 'bout a five, I'm quite poor,
I think I've heard those words before
Oh the things you'll see
Goodness Gracious me
Looking for Dave selling Big Issues by the street cafe
stop and have a chat you know he'll ask you to
Lend me your ear won't you - that's what Newtown people do
it's kind of like the country, breathin' in the city - come on down
Come on down to Newtown, come on down
Come on down to Newtown
Come on down
Come on down to Newtown
Won't you come on do~ww~nn~!

Taser gun use criticised after a man was killed by NSW Police officers
he Australian public and governing bodies have criticized the way the taser gun is being used by authorities and some people have even accused the Australian police force of brutality.
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione who spoke at a news conference defended the use of the taser gun which led to the death of the man in his 20's on Monday.
Scipione said that two officers had been called to the home of a female victim who had claimed to have been sexually assaulted.
The officers who went to the front then rear of the house was confronted by a man armed with two knifesin which the officers made a split second decision which I believe may have saved their lives continued Scipione.
Scipione said One officer armed with a taser was able to discharge the weapon at a close range to disable the offender, had he not been successful I certainly believe the consequences could have been tragic for one or both of the officers.
The taser camera footage has been reviewed and that footage supports that view.
However the time of the death could not have been any worse for the Australian police force after another man was killed just 24 hours previous.
Steven Bosevski had died after being sprayed with capsicum spray and hit with a baton by officers after a fight broke out at the St George Leagues Club.
Scipione who also spoke of Mr Bosevski's death has said the autopsy result shows that Bosevski had not received any physical injury that could have caused death by the police officers.

A new mural is just one of many appearing around the world, but the meaning is much deeper than just pictures.
From a bear in Canada to an elephant in Jozi, South African street artist Sonny is on a mission to raise awareness of animal conservation by painting large-scale street murals in as many places around the world as possible.
His latest work appears on a wall in Vladivostok,Russia, where residents are admiring his newest subject – a giant Amur leopard, one of the planet's most endangered cats.
