Driving Through Florence
I forgot that we had planned on stopping in Florence on our way to Rome (I was pretty excited and tired). So for the entire time I was driving during this video I thought the GPS was just taking us through the scenic route!
Tuscany (Florence & Pisa) - ITALY DAY 3 [VLOG #17]

It was our 3rd and last full day in the Tuscany area. This was mainly the highlight of our trip being able to visit Florence and Pisa.
Our journey started by driving to a town near Florence where we parked our car. Bear in mind, if your renting a car you cannot drive it on streets that are 'ZTL' (zona traffico limitato) Many historical centers of Italian cities have set up these limited traffic zones in order to reduce congestion and pollution, and there are significant fines for driving into one of these zones unauthorized.
So we decide to park our car in a big Coop (department store) . Took the tram to town from station Nenni - Torregalli until we reach the last stop which is the city centre of Florence.
So when we arrived the first thing we looked for was the cathedral . I don't think my camera gave justice with how beautiful this building is. We took an hour each roaming around the cathedral. Myself and Ken sticked to our gelato all day erday in Italy. Then 'hanger' strikes, we looked for the closest resto we could find and I ended up not being happy about my lunch.
Honest opinion and lesson learned do not go to restaurants that are close to tourist spots unless you are willing to pay a bit more for those fancy restaurants (in which I ain't paying for since I ain't got budget for it) #keepinitReal
The next part of the day was driving to a town near Pisa where we parked our car. Again bearing in mind 'ZTL' if you're driving a rental car and have no permit on these zones, you need to be careful or you will be fined. So we parked here and took a bus from there to the outside walls of Pisa (only €1 each person).
Again, I don't think my camera is giving this place justice as it was just spectacular. There were plenty of people trying to take the signature Pisa pose, though we tried to copy the others. We failed in taking good photos.
To top off our day, Myself, Ken, Jordan and Jena found this local restaurant for dinner as we were starving while the rest spent time on the pool in our airbnb villa. So this restaurant had no english menu so body language and google translate was used. haha. The food was great and super affordable that we got to order a full course.
Then just when we were about to sleep. There was fireworks display which was appropriate since it was our last night in Italy.
On the next vlog.. it will be a pretty simple day just driving back to Rome and flying back to Dublin (home).

Florence and our Chianti Cycle Wine Tour
We weren't really planning on spending much time in Florence. Wasn't it just another big city? What was the advantage for us to stop off to see a populated city?
Between Siena and Florence, we had a stop off at the quaint and beautiful Montefioralle to wander the little alleyways and lanes. We also gazed in awe of the panoramic countryside from way up on the hill next to the ancient castle.
Well, one of the bonuses to staying in Florence is that it is in the Chianti region. We don't usually do guided tours, so when we do, it has to be worth the money. It also has to be an experience that is quintessential to a particular region. Something that we consider a 'must do'. I couldn't think of any better reason for booking ourselves onto a cycling Wine Tour through the Chianti countryside.
We saw all the important tourist attractions (thanks to Rick Steves Audio Walking Guide) which included The Accademia: Michelangelo's David.

Our B&B was perfectly located and walkable distance to the city sights.

If you have to drive in Florence, watch out for many ZLT zones and don't get caught by driving through one. It is much safer and easier to park at the Villa Costanza Car Park and it's an easy tram ride into the heart of the city.

Video notes:
First you have to buy a train ticket. It is super easy. You don’t need to buy the tickets in advance. Find a ticket machine, press the language you need, then select buy your train ticket. One thing to keep in mind is that the names of the city are written in Italian. For example, Florence is Firenze. Next, pick the date and the time. The cost is 8.40 euros each trip. There’s no assigned seats so get there early to get seats.
The train doors don’t open for you. You have to press the button to get inside the train.
We are here in Pisa! It is a 20 minutes walk from the train station to the Square of Miracles where the Leaning Tower is of Pisa is located.
Buy the tickets to the Leaning Tower in advance on the actual website. You can buy the tickets 20 days before the day you’re visiting and up to 1 day in advance. Watch out for third party websites that try to rip you off by charging you double the cost. If you just want to climb up the tower, it is only 18 euros. Other websites will try to charge you up to 38 dollars for the same ticket.
Your ticket comes with free entrance to the Cathedral. Don’t forget to take advantage of that!
You can’t bring purses or backpacks into the tower. Don’t worry, they will keep your stuff in a locker for free.
Ever wonder why this tower leans? “Pisa” comes from the Greek word for “marshy land.” You would think the architects would have taken the subsoil into account while building a very tall bell tower, Nope! The foundation of the build is shallow and heavy. By the time they built the 2nd story the tower began to sink to one side. They tired to fix their mistake by building taller columns, but that did not help the poor tower.
At the very top you can walk a circle around the bell tower. You can take your time taking in the view of the city. They say you only have 30 minutes up there but nobody is really there to throw you out when your time is up. I was up there for well over 30 minutes. I am actually amazed how they are able to manage the crowds at each place we’ve been to. Limiting the amount of people at the entrance definitely made the visit very peaceful.
If you want to get a picture of the city with the leaning tower, then pay 5 euros to get in and see the view from the top of the Baptistery
With your tickets to the tower you can visit the cathedral for free. You can get a fixed time ticket for free to get in. I went in just fine without getting one. I guess it would depend on which days you are going and if there is an event going on. Check on their website to make sure there isn’t an event during the day you are visiting.
Alongside the Arno river is the Santa Maria della Spina church. It is free to visit. It’s a nice short stop. Della Spina translation is “of the thorn.” This represents the thorn placed on christ during his Passion and crucifixion. It was originally named Santa Maris di Pontenovo after a bridge that was nearby but it collapsed in the 15th century and was never rebuilt.

ITALY, Lucca Florence Siena
This video, part three of a series, includes the Italian cities of Lucca, Florence and Siena. The old city of Lucca with its ancient amphitheater now encircled with residences and shops is a charming place to visit. We visit just prior to the annual parade of lights. It was the birthplace of composers and nowadays the Lucca area has many schools of music. Next we visit Florence which was blessed by the Medici family with their villas, churches and artworks. You will see The David sculpture in the Academia museum which is an icon in Florence and admired thru the centuries. The Duomo is probably the most recognized building with its brick dome and colorful marble exterior. Over the Arno River the Ponte Vecchio bridge is a landmark in Florence. You will have a panoramic view of Florence from Michelangelo Hill, will visit piazzas where locals and tourists gather and see a snippet of the Uffizi Gallery. The video ends in Siena, just south of Florence. Both of these cities have UNESCO designation. Siena has an amazing cathedral built in the Romanesque style in the 12th century, then transformed in the 13th century to one of the finest examples of Italian Gothic architecture. Also, I have included a description of the horse race which takes place the 2nd of July and 16th of August each year in the Piazza del Campo, the central gathering place in Siena. This horse race has participants from ten of the seventeen Contradas (or city wards) in Siena and brings in visitors from all around the world to see this unusual event.

The current owner received the entire village as a wedding gift from her father - not a bad way to start a marriage. Volpaia produces world class wines and is the perfect setting for a romantic getaway.

On our next adventure in Italy, we tackled the Florence Market Shopping experience! Buying all sorts of new amazing leather goods.
There are many reasons to visit Italy, but the Florence Markets are one of many. The two main ones we visited were the Mercado Centrale Firenze and the San Lorenzo leather market.
There's so much to explore around Florence, so make sure you have a few days to just wander and enjoy the late night cafes or great food options like pizza and pasta and all the local delicacies! Travel to Italy is one of our favourites... so be sure to check back again for our next city, the famous Venice!!
