Aswan Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Aswan in Egypt.
From a distance Aswan appears to be a small, rather idyllic and sleepy city but around two hundred and eighty thousand people live on Egypt’s southern border. It is impossible not to be captivated by the pulsating life of the mysterious and strange streets of Aswan. Even today the colourful displays of goods in the souks are dominated by the historical South African caravan trade. The city is well known for its traditional bazaars. Depending on the time of day, everyday life is relatively calm and interrupted only by the hectic hustle and bustle of the traders. Aswan is synonymous with immense dams. In 1902 the first dam on the Nile was completed by the British. The Soviet Union sponsored the construction of an even larger dam. In 1971 the Sadd El-Ali Dam transformed the appearance of the Nile forever.

What to do in Aswan - What to do in Egypt part 2 - Aswan adventures
Aswan itself is a melting pot of African and Middle Eastern cultures, most easily experienced by wandering through the busy markets . It's also part of the ancient region of nubia , which comprised parts of present day southern Egypt and northern Sudan around the nile river city on the Nile River, has been southern Egypt’s strategic and commercial gateway since antiquity. It contains significant archaeological sites like the Philae temple complex, on Agilkia Island near the landmark Aswan Dam. Philae’s ruins include the columned Temple of Isis, dating to the 4th century B.C. Downriver, Elephantine Island holds the Temple of Khnum, Edfu temple , there are other things to do here like sleeping inside a Felucca cruise , sailing in the nile river , exploring a Nubian island and visiting the amazing Abu Simbel temple.
Surviving an Egyptian Market + Trying Local Aswan Dish
We have arrived in Aswan and our goal for the night is to try and survive the Egyptian Markets / souk. We show you what it's like to haggle prices, when it's time to leave and generally how safe the markets are before jumping onto the nile to have a traditional Nubian dish here in Aswan.

EGYPT: Nile Cruise & Ancient Monuments (Luxor, Aswan, Giza)
Impression of Egypt along the Nile. More videos of the 7-day Nile Cruise:
Egyptian civilization have depended on the river Nile since ancient times. Most of the population and cities of Egypt lie along the Nile valley north of Aswan. Silt deposits from the Nile made the surrounding land fertile because the river overflowed its banks annually. The Ancient Egyptians cultivated and traded wheat, flax, papyrus and other crops around the Nile. The Nile was also a convenient and efficient means of transportation for people and goods. Nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along river banks.
The Nile was an important part of ancient Egyptian spiritual life and considered to be a causeway from life to death and the afterlife. The east was thought of as a place of birth and growth, and the west was considered the place of death. Thus, all tombs were west of the Nile, because the Egyptians believed that in order to enter the afterlife, they had to be buried on the side that symbolized death.

For more detailed information about each monument see the description of each individual video. Except for:
The Colossi of Memnon (51:16) are two massive stone statues of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who reigned in Egypt during the Dynasty XVIII. For the past 3,400 years (since 1350 BC), they have stood in the Theban Necropolis, located west of the River Nile from the modern city of Luxor. Two shorter figures are carved into the front throne alongside his legs: these are his wife Tiye and mother Mutemwiya. The side panels depict the Nile god Hapy.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities (55:30), known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, in Cairo-Egypt, is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. It has 120,000 items, with a representative amount on display, the remainder in storerooms. It houses the world's largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities.
Part of the collection will be moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum set to open in 2020. It will house Tutankhamun's complete collection of between 4000 and 5000 artefacts, many of which are undergoing restoration and have never been displayed; the vast collection we have viewed at the old museum represents only about a third of the whole. The Grand Egyptian Museum is located on 50 hectares at Giza, two kilometres from the Grand Pyramids. The Egyptian Museum in Cairo will remain open.

No tripod was used, it was not allowed (also there wouldn't be enough time during group excursions).
A videography ticket (EP 300) is needed to film inside the Abu Simbel Temples, Valley of the Kings, and museums.
To take pictures only in museums, a photography ticket is needed (EGP 50).
The cruise was booked via Corendon travel agency in the Netherlands/Holland.

EGYPT - Aswan market during evening call to prayer
A walk through the Aswan, Egypt, spice market in the evening
The town of Aswan, Egypt, has a large market area -- mainly a long pedestrian street with shops squeezed in where ever there's room. There are a large number of spice merchants on this street so some people call this the spice market. This video is a 4 or 5 minute walk along this street in the evening in early January 2010. I have posted a series of 7 videos that cover my Egypt and Jordan tour. You can reach them most easily by doing a YouTube search with the following entry: Egypt-Jordan part 1 of 7 --- and after you've seen part 1, then replace 1 with 2 (and so forth) in the search box until you've seen all 7.

EGYPT: Aswan - Nile - Kitchener's Island - Nubian village
Aswan is a busy market and tourist centre located on the east bank of the Nile, in the south of Egypt. It is one of the hottest, sunniest and driest cities in the world and rainfall doesn't occur every year. The stone quarries of ancient Egypt located here were celebrated for their stone. They furnished the colossal statues, obelisks, and monolithal shrines that are found throughout Egypt, including the pyramids.

El Nabatat Island, or Kitchener's Island, is a small, oval-shaped island in the Nile at Aswan, Egypt. It is one of two major islands on the Nile in vicinity of Aswan, the other one being Elephantine. The Aswan Botanical Garden is located on the island. The island and gardens can be reached by felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat).
The island is known as Kitchener's Island, named after Lord Kitchener who owned it. He was gifted the island, when he served as Consul-General in Egypt from 29 September 1911 to June 1914. With the aid of the Ministry of Irrigation, Kitchener rapidly transformed the small 750 metres (2,460 ft) long island into a paradise of exotic trees, many from India, and plants in gardens with view walkways. It later passed into the property of the Egyptian government and was used as a research station called the Botanical Research Institute, Aswan Botanic Island.

Nubia is a region along the Nile river encompassing the area between Aswan in southern Egypt and Khartoum in central Sudan. It was the seat of one of the earliest civilizations of ancient Africa, with a history that can be traced from at least 2500 BC onward with the Kerma culture.
The latter was conquered by the New Kingdom of Egypt under pharaoh Thutmose I around 1500 BC. Nubia was home to several empires, most prominently the kingdom of Kush, which conquered Egypt during the 8th century BC during the reign of Piye and ruled the country as its Twenty-fifth Dynasty (to be replaced a century later by the native Egyptian Twenty-sixth Dynasty).
Today, Africans of Nubian descent primarily live in southern Egypt, especially in the Luxor and Aswan area. Nubians have been resettled in large numbers away from southern Egypt since the 1960s, when the Aswan High Dam was built on the Nile, flooding ancestral lands.
