Alberobello - Italy - Unesco World Heritage Site
Alberobello is a small town and comune in the province of Bari, in Puglia, Italy. It has about 11,000 inhabitants and is famous for its unique trulli constructions. The Trulli of Alberobello are part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites list since 1996.In some degrees of the fourteenth century the site of Alberobello is reported by the term Silva Arboris Belli, referring to an area rich with lush vegetation, but no permanent settlements inhabited. One of the first human settlement activities began only in the early sixteenth century at the instigation of the count of Conversano III Andrea Matteo Acquaviva d'Aragona, son of the famous Count Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, who died in 1481 at Otranto in the war against the Turks. Count Andrea Matteo introduced by the estate of nuts about forty families of farmers to reclaim and cultivate the land, with the obligation to hand over a tenth of the harvest. Its successor, the powerful Count II Giangirolamo said Guercio of Apulia (1600-1665), who had erected a hunting lodge and an inn on the spot, began the real urban jungle with the construction of a cluster of houses. The abundance of calcareous sediment and authorization of the count only to build houses with dry stone walls without using mortar, which are the trulli, contributed to the expansion of the urban sprawl. This requirement to build homes only with dry-stone of the Count was an expedient to avoid paying taxes to the Spanish Viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples under the Pragmatics of Baronibus, the law in force until 1700, according to which the construction of a new inhabited primarily involved in the Royal assent and consecutive payment of taxes by the Baron to the Royal Court. In fact, in 1644, following a complaint made by the Duke Caracciolo di Martina Franca was ordered a directed inspection. To prevent the action of the Count Giangirolamo ordered the settlers to demolish homes and move away temporarily from the area. This happened in one night, so that inspectors recorded were available only scattered stones.
Alberobello was feud of the Acquaviva d'Aragona accounts for several generations, until May 27, 1797, when King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon took up the instance of Alberobello and issued a decree which elevated the small village to a royal city, freeing them from feudal serfdom.

Alberobello , in Puglia , with its Trulli is one of the 53 Italian sites included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List. The name derives from the late Greek τρούλος , or dome and indicates the ancient conical constructions in dry stone of prehistoric origin. The stone used for the buildings was obtained from the calcareous rocks of the Murge plateau. The Trulli, mainly present in the Valle d'Itria , located between the provinces of Brindisi , Bari and Taranto , are still used today as dwellings and constitute a brilliant and long-lived example of spontaneous architecture.
Alberobello , a town in the hinterland of Bari, is undoubtedly the capital of the Trulli: the historic center is made up entirely of these particular pyramid-shaped buildings that make it unique in the world. According to some studies, the trulli of Alberobello date back to the mid-fourteenth century; at the time it was in fact common to demolish and rebuild the disused buildings, rather than repair them.
The dry construction, without mortar, seems to have been imposed on peasants in the fifteenth century by the Counts of Conversano , to escape an edict of the Kingdom of Naples that imposed tributes to each new urban settlement. These buildings were therefore precarious buildings, easily demolished and not taxable.
In truth, the trulli are far from precarious: the internal structure, although lacking elements of support and connection, in fact possesses an extraordinary static capacity.
The trullo plant is approximately circular; on the basis of natural rock grafted heavy masonry in lime. Generally the trulli are modular units: the internal rooms are distributed around the central compartment. The thickness of the walls and the lack of windows ensure an optimal thermal balance: warmth in winter and cool in summer. The roof is composed of a pseudo-dome of horizontal limestone slabs positioned in increasingly smaller concentric series - the so-called chianche (inside) and the thinner chiancarelle (outside).
The keystone is very important , often decorated with esoteric, spiritual or propitiatory motifs. Ingenious the presence of a ledge protruding from the roof used for the collection of rainwater in special tanks. The trulli are a unique example of ancient construction that survives and is still used today. Visiting the beautiful Alberobello is like taking a trip to a timeless country.

TRULLI OF ALBEROBELLO, ITALY | Italian UNESCO World Heritage Site
We finally reached the southern Italian city of Bari, and today, we visited a small town outside Bari, to see the famous structures of Trulli Alberobello.
The trulli of Alberobello are distinctive houses in the town of Alberobello, Italy. These limestone dwellings are corbelled dry-stone construction - a prehistoric building technique still in use in Puglia. These Trulli houses Alberobello are currently protected, and the whole town of Alberobello is a designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Alberobello Trulli houses were built in the 14th century and purposely without mortar to avoid paying property tax. Their individual corbelled limestone slabs could be easily dissembled when the tax collector came to check - a clever tax evasion scheme in the 14th century!
Alberobello has two main trulli districts - Rione Monti and Aia Piccola. Both have plentiful architectural examples of trulli houses in Puglia.

The Trulli in the Apulian town of Alberobello are famous worldwide for their beauty and unique characteristics, and represent one of the most extraordinary examples of Italian folk architecture. They were built in a particular historical period, when the construction of stable dwellings was highly-taxed; the inhabitants of the region thus boasted a great capacity to adapt, and an exceptional cleverness in coming up with the idea for the Trulli, temporary houses built with the local stone. Trulli di AlberobelloFrom precariousness to stability - the process of transformation and recovery, and the deference to the originality of the work earned the Trulli of Alberobello (in Apulia) their recognition as a World Heritage Site. In the southeastern zone of the Murge Plateau, more precisely in the area of Valle d'Itria, these buildings are scattered throughout the territory, where they stand out with their white walls and famous cone-shaped roofs.

Unique constructions, they are sometimes combined in a complex of communicating houses, while others are built on two levels. Most of them feature a grey cone-shaped roof that ends with a sphere or hemisphere shape. The interior, arranged as a single chamber, is constituted niches for a fireplace, bed and various furniture. The structure assures excellent indoor climate control: cool in summer and warm in winter!

The Trulli of Alberobello - UNESCO World Heritage Site
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the trulli of Alberobello are conical-shaped stone houses, unique to this specific area of Bari province in far south-eastern Italy. They began to develop as first animal and then peasant housing in the 17th century, before gradually spreading to towns as well, particularly in Alberobello. Nobody seems to really know why houses developed in this way, though the abundance of limestone and the endless search for coolness in summer certainly both played a role. Come with me as I explore this fascinating part of Italy's cultural heritage!
