Where it Began. St. Benedict's Impact from Subiaco, Italy - EWTN Vaticano Special
This Week on EWTN Vaticano for August 4, 2019. Episode 393.
We discover some of the treasures housed in the monastery of St. Benedict of Nursia in Subiaco, Italy and we visit the Sacred Cave, where the saint remained for 3 years, dedicating his life completely to prayer.
Also, a Benedictine monk tells us what makes up the Holy Rule of St Benedict and how it works. And, to close, we'll introduce you to one of the main devotees of the Saint of Nursia.

Good day to all of you!
If you come to Italy this place is just at about 70 Km from Rome. It's a ski resort and it has a breathtaking view.
The second place is the famous monastery of Saint Benedict.
Saint Benedict, (born c. 480 CE, Nursia [Italy]—died c. 547, Monte Cassino, founder of the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino and father of Western monasticism; the rule that he established became the norm for monastic living throughout Europe. In 1964, in view of the work of monks following the Benedictine Rule in the evangelization and civilization of so many European countries in the Middle Ages, Pope Paul VI proclaimed him the patron saint of all Europe.

St Benedict's Sacro Speco (Holy Cave) | Italia Slow Tour
The so called Sacro Speco in Subiaco is a place of hermitage that has become work of architecture and art. Here is the cave where the young Benedict took refuge from Rome and where he remained for three years, in prayer. First there was nothing, just the cave with some hermitages here and there. Then, in 1200, a spectacular structure was built and it became a place of pilgrimage, and St Francis passed here too, by his time. You know, this place is important because here the journeys of the two Saints combines. St Benedict and St Francis had in common the idea of peace as their main teaching purpose.

Monastery of Santa Scolastica | Italia Slow Tour
Spiritual trekking in Central Italy: visit the monastery of Santa Scolastica, then walk for a quick trail to Saint Benedict of Subiaco where is the famous Sacro Speco (Holy Cave). It's a wonderful path, seriously, it's almost better than the walk to Santiago de Compostela! The abbey dedicated to Santa Scolastica – who was Saint Benedict’s sister, nun as well – is a place where knowledge is preserved, through a huge archive of ancient books. There is also an ancient hand-written Bible, purchased in 1394.

Agosta Italy, Ancient Town Near Subiaco
Agosta is an Italian town near Subiaco, within reach for a day trip from Rome. The town takes its name from the Roman emperor Augustus. The symbol appearing at 3:30 is a fascio, a symbol of the fascist era in Italy, it's not infrequent to still see it camping on the facades of the old houses. The symbol suggests that the people living in that house were affiliated with the fascist party.

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Benedict, Sub prior at the Benedictine Monastery in Norcia:
There's always the option for an individual monk to give up alcohol, to give up beer, to give up wine, but traditionally beer has been something that monks have drunk more of during Lent because they're fasting. The monks eat only one meal a day, often late in the afternoon, so beer was a way to add sustenance to that meal.

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Father Benedict, Sub prior at the Benedictine Monastery in Norcia:
So many people are afraid of going to church, afraid of talking about God, afraid of things that have to do with religion. But they're so much more easy, when talking about beer. So for us it's a way to open a door; a door that maybe they've never wanted open before. Then naturally from a material point of view, this also helps us restore our monastery. We have ancient buildings here. The crypt comes from the 1st century. We have 14th century walls around the whole property and all of them need constant maintenance, constant support, so it also enables us to keep the building not just in shape, but also beautify it, make it into something really beautiful to glorify God.

25. SOUNDBITE (English) Brother Francis, Nursia Beer brew master at Benedictine Monastery in Norcia (left):
We looked at making a blonde and a Belgian strong dark, which are kind of the symbols of monastic brewing, so we decided on that style, because it's well known, it's representing monastic beers, they're pretty traditional, and I personally like that type of beer.
