Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area near Thekkady in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as both a elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area covers an area of 925 km2 (357 sq mi). 305 km2 (118 sq mi) of the core zone was declared as the Periyar National Park in 1982. The park is a repository of rare, endemic and endangered flora and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and the Pamba.

The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the south Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu. It is 4 km (2.5 mi) from Kumily, approximately 100 km (62 mi) east of Kottayam, 110 km (68 mi) west of Madurai and 120 km (75 mi) southeast of Kochi.

Periyar Tiger Reserve - Trekking and Camping

The programme constitutes two days and one night or three days and two nights. You can go only in groups for this trek where you will be accompanied by armed forest guards with good communication equipment. Visitors are expected to be medically fit and serious nature lovers, aged between 15 and 65. They should bring their own travel kits. Apart from providing an opportunity to experience forest life, the programme also tries to create awareness about the role of the public in the prevention of poaching and other illegal activities as well as in taking initiatives to protect the forest and its invaluable wealth.

These poachers turned protectors of the forest have a thorough knowledge of the forest. These expert guides help to pitch tents and to cook food. They also have vast knowledge about the flora and fauna in the forest, even those in the remote areas.

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is located in Pilibhit district, Lakhimpur Kheri District and Bahraich District of Uttar Pradesh The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is one of the finest examples of the exceedingly diverse and productive Terai eco¬systems. Pilibhit Tiger Reserve was declared in September 2014 on the basis of its special type of ecosystem with vast open spaces and sufficient feed for the elegant predators.It is India’s 45th Tiger Reserve Project. The northern edge of the reserve lies along the Indo¬-Nepal border while the southern boundary is marked by the river Sharada and Khakra. The study done by Wildlife Institute of India (WII) shows that Dudhwa-Pilibhit population has high conservation value as it represents the only tiger population with the ecological and behavioral adaptations of the tiger unique to the Tarai region. It is home to a habitat for over 127 animals, 326 bird species and 2,100 flowering plants. It is a mosaic of high sal forests, plantation and grasslands with several water bodies. The jungles are home to a myriad of wild animals including the endangered tiger, swamp deer, Bengal florican, hog deer, leopard, etc. The large carnivores are supported by a very large prey base consisting of cheetal, sambar, wild boar, hog deer, swamp deer, blue bull, etc. The bird life is very rich and diverse and hundreds of species of birds can be seen round. The Chuka Interpretation Zones with nature interpretation center, cottages & edge of huge water body is unique & very popular with visitors.
