Raas leela brings communities together in Tripura
Tripura, Nov 21 (ANI): A festival of primarily the Manipuri community, Maha Raas was recently observed in the state of Tripura. The celebrations witnessed people of all communities coming together to join in the nightlong celebrations in a unique display of communal harmony. The festival is celebrated every year on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima in the Hindu month - Kartik to mark Lord Krishna's love for Radha. Maha Raas was first observed in Tripura more than two centuries back at the Radha-Madhav Jews Temple. The celebration of this festival was initiated after a Maharani of the Manikya dynasty of Tripura, daughter of Manipur's Maharaja Bhagya Chandra brought the idol of Radha-Gobind from there and established the Radhamadhav temple here. Hindus, Muslims along with hundreds of Tribals participate in the merriment and festivities regardless of their religious and cultural identity. Young girls in traditional dresses play the role of gopies or cow-herd girls and dance around the images of Radha and Krishna throughout the night. The Radha Govindas Rass dance is a classical form of dance and symbolizes the rich history and tradition of the Manipuri community. Nipa pala is celebrated as invocation to Rass where pung (traditional drums) and kartals (small metallic musical instruments) are played. Raas Leela is a symbol of love and communal harmony and an occasion for everyone to engage in merriment forgetting all their differences. Such festivals play a vital role in maintaining peace and unity, especially in the small and the diverse state of Tripura.
