Japan’s Amazing 100m Art Tower Mito
It’s one of Mito city’s attraction since 1990, the Art Tower Mito (ATM) certainly makes you stop and stare when you see it. It's exactly 100 meters high and was built to celebrate Mito's 100th anniversary.
On a trip to Mito, Jennifer Julien and I made a stop there to get a view of the city at sunset.

茨城県日立市。広大な海と恵み豊かな山々の間に栄える都市。旅行者達は日立駅の駅舎内から目の前に広がる海を眺めた後、日立おさかなセンターで新鮮な海産物を自由に選んで丼にする「味勝手丼」を食べます。その後、十王と呼ばれる町にあるネジの製造工場を見学。そこでネジが製造される工程を見せてもらい、その技術力を注いで作られたコマを触らせてもらいます。その場でコマ対戦を体験させてもらった後は日鉱記念館を訪れ、施設内を見学しながら、日立の鉱山の歴史を学び、鉱石の展示を眺めます。場所を移し、日立市かみね動物園で動物と触れ合い、普段なかなか目にすることの出来ない動物達を眺めていきます。その日の旅の最後は日立シビックセンターへ。ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録された日立風流物の展示を見上げ、プラネタリウムで美しい星の映像を眺めます。日が沈んだ後、旅行者達はうのしまヴィラに宿泊。翌日の早朝、旅行者は施設内の海岸を歩き、そこから美しい日の出を眺め、日立市の旅を終えます。

The Kodokan is one of Japan’s national historical sites and important cultural properties, located in Mito city. It was the largest school of feudal domain in Japan, established by the ninth feudal lord of the Mito Clan, Nariaki Tokugawa, in 1842.
The last Shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, studied at this school in his early childhood, and spent his life while he was confined after the restoration of imperial rule.
In this filming, we were able to film things we can’t normally see such as the real bird’s eye view drawing, the inside of Confucian temple, and the Kodokan-ki monument in the eight trigrams hall.

茨城県最北端の地、北茨城市。海の崖の上にたたずむ六角堂。日本の美術の発展に大きく貢献した岡倉天心に関する資料や様々な美術品が展示されている天心記念五浦美術館を見学し、旅行者の旅がスタートします。美術館を後にした旅行者は、近くのお店「船頭料理天心丸」にてアンコウを用いた名物鍋「どぶ汁」を堪能します。その後「二ツ島」を背に磯原海岸を歩き、今度は山並みの見える方角を目指します。旅行者は山間部にあるガラス工房シリカ（SILICA）を訪ね、館内を巡った後に実際にガラス制作の体験をさせてもらいます。その後旅行者は紅葉に彩られた花園と呼ばれる地へ足を踏み入れ、花園神社を訪れてお参りを済ませた後、ハイキングコースを進み、七ツ滝を目指します。滝に到着し、その光景と音を満喫して旅行者は北茨城市の旅を終えます。

야쿠시마에서 30분정도 달려가면 다네가시마 섬이 나타난다. 이곳은 16세기경 포르투갈인들이 일본에 조총을 처음 전해준 곳으로 유명하다. 하지만 지금 이 섬의 상징은 단연 다네가시마 우주센터다. 다네가시마 우주센터는 이 섬의 최남단 바닷가에 자리 잡고 있다. 1970년 일본 최초로 쏘아올린 로켓의 모형이 보이고 넓은 잔디밭에는 일본의 우주기술이 집약된 H-Ⅱ 로켓의 실물모형이 전시되어 있다. 우주센터에서는 관광객들을 위해 하루 2회씩 버스투어로 로켓발사에 관련된 시설을 견학하는 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 다네가시마 우주센터의 핵심시설인 대형로켓 발사장이 보인다. 이곳에는 2개의 발사대가 있는데 일본의 최신 기종인 H-Ⅱ 로켓이 아홉 차례나 발사되었다고 한다. 우주센터 관계자들의 호의 덕분에 나는 로켓의 엔진과 주요 부품들이 조립되는 현장을 구경할 수 있었다. 비록 자세한 기술 원리는 이해할 수 없어도 최첨단 현대과학기술이 집결된 우주로켓을 눈앞에서 바라본다는 사실 자체가 내게는 황홀한 경험이었다. 우주센터 탐방의 최종코스는 우주과학기술관이다. 전시관 내부에는 우주개발에 관한 다양한 정보가 소개되어 있는데 일본이 독자적으로 개발한 로켓 실물엔진과 로켓발사 시뮬레이션 등 다양한 볼거리들이 전시되고 있다. 최근 귀환한 우주비행사가 우주공간에서의 무중력 상태에 대한 경험을 이야기해주고 있는 장면도 인상적이다.
