A visit to the Ice Castle in Lincoln, New Hampshire
The Ice Castle is located on the west end of the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains of northern New Hampshire.
The Ice Castle web site is Below is a short video of our trip.
As I shared the above video among friends, I keep getting one inquisitive question on our Ice Castle visit. Will icicles fall on me? Here is a picture I took looking up at hanging icicles as we roam in the Ice Castle:
Below is the answer I copied from the Ice Castles web site Frequently Asked Questions (
There are several reasons why Icicles at the Ice Castle do not have these problems, and do not fall like icicles attached to a roof:
Icicles at the Ice Castle are attached to ice. This means there is no weak point (i.e. a roof) limiting the strength of the structure.
Connection points of icicles at the Ice Castle are proportional to the icicle. This means that the base of the icicle at the Ice Castle is the strongest, because it is the largest in mass and diameter.
There is no dark material at the base of all the icicles at the Ice Castle that will heat up and cause melting.
When Icicles at the Ice Castle melt, they melt per the laws of nature. This means that the smallest parts of the icicle melt first and it will take more time for the ice in the center of the icicle to melt. On a warm day, the icicles will melt from the bottom up. The smallest parts of the icicles will drip and turn to slush. The slush at the end may fall in small pieces. Guests visiting on days where the temperature is sunny and above freezing will get dripped on, and occasionally small masses of slush will fall.
We know icicles attached to roofs in New Hampshire may be dangerously heavy and knife shaped. You most assuredly do not want to be under a falling icicle. The FAQ explains roof attached icicles:
Icicles attached to roofs almost always will fall. There are several reasons that Icicles attached to man-made structures will fall. Here are some of them:
The connection point of the icicles to the roof is inherently weak and it is usually not proportional to the icicle.
· The connection point of the icicle (dark shingles) absorbs heat from the sun and causes that point to melt first.
· The icicles usually fall when the weather warms up. The way it happens is that snow on the roof melts causing water to run past the small connection points of icicles causing melting at the base of icicles attached to roofs. The base of the icicle (which is usually smaller in mass, diameter, and width) melts faster than the large hanging portions of the icicles and the icicles fall.

Driving Through Lincoln, N.H. In Winter
Lincoln is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. It is the second-largest town by area in New Hampshire. The population was 1,662 at the 2010 census. The town is home to the New Hampshire Highland Games and to a portion of Franconia Notch State Park. Set in the White Mountains, large portions of the town are within the White Mountain National Forest. The Appalachian Trail crosses in the northeast. Lincoln is the location of the Loon Mountain ski resort and associated recreation-centered development.
The primary settlement in town, where 993 people resided at the 2010 census, is defined as the Lincoln census-designated place (CDP) and is located along New Hampshire Route 112 east of Interstate 93. The town also includes the village of North Lincoln and the former village sites of Stillwater and Zealand (sometime known as Pullman) in the town's remote eastern and northern sections respectively, which are now within the White Mountain National Forest

White Mountains
The White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) is a federally managed forest contained within the White Mountains in the northeastern United States. It was established in 1918 as a result of the Weeks Act of 1911; federal acquisition of land had already begun in 1914. It has a total area of 750,852 acres (3,039 km2) (1,225 sq mi). Most of the WMNF is in New Hampshire; a small part (about 5.65% of the forest) is in the neighboring state of Maine. While often casually referred to as a park, this is a National Forest, used not only for hiking, camping, and skiing, but for logging and other limited commercial purposes. The WMNF is the only National Forest located in either New Hampshire or Maine. Most of the major peaks over 4,000 feet high for peak-bagging in New Hampshire are located in the National Forest. Over 100 miles (160 km) of the Appalachian Trail traverses the White Mountain National Forest. In descending order of land area the forest lies in parts of Grafton, Coos, and Carroll counties in New Hampshire, and Oxford County in Maine.

Ice castles turn farmland into winter wonderland
(28 Feb 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus112903
Thousands of people are flocking to a winter wonderland in New Hampshire constructed from ice.
Ice Castles in North Woodstock features a collection of ice tunnels, caverns and a 97-foot ice slide that cover an acre of farmland. Some have said it looks like a scene straight out of the movie Frozen.
It is massively popular, I think, more than our founders would have ever imagined it to be, lead builder Matt Pasciuto says, adding that tickets sell out every Friday and Saturday night.
His team is tasked with bringing the site to life every year.
We have a guy on our staff who programs -- basically creates a light program that sends signals to each light individually to create kind of a passive light show as the -- as the night goes on. It's sort of set to the music, he says, adding that both help give the castle extra personality.
The attraction starts small in December, when Pasciuto and the team set up icicle farms: Metal racks that are sprayed with water to allow icicles to grow on them overnight. The icicles are then harvested by ice artists, who place them around more than 70 sprinklers.
Once we turn the sprinklers on, the water starts freezing to those icicles, making them grow together, bigger and bigger and thicker and thicker, says Pasciuto. We grow the castle about two to three feet at a time.
It's become a popular site for marriage proposals.
Adam Schellinger and his wife Ashley started coming to the site three years ago when they first started dating. The couple got engaged on last year's visit and crowd immediately began cheering, Ashley told the Associated Press.
So, we've been going ever since the first year (referring to the couple's first year of dating) and then, last year, it was like his deadline, she said.
He took me to the ice castles again and proposed, because that was our special place, she added.
The couple was married in September.
The winter wonderland is one of six in North America.

Dillon Ice Castles
The Ice Castles are returning this winter to Dillon, Colorado. The winter wonderland will start construction in late November, with professional ice artisans crafting and growing 10,000 icicles each day. The icicles are harvested until the opening of the life-size ice kingdom, projected to open at the end of December.

Come play in a giant ice castle this winter
Have you ever wanted to wander through a real winter wonderland? Now’s your chance! Ice Castles are coming to six North American cities this winter: Dillon, Colorado; Edmonton, Alberta; Excelsior, Minnesota; Lake Geneva, Wisconsin; Lincoln, New Hampshire; and Midway, Utah.
Each castle is built by hand using hundred of thousands of icicles, and each weighs more than 25 million pounds. LED lights frozen inside the ice add to the magical ambiance. Inside these icy palaces, visitors find sculptures, frozen thrones, ice tunnels, slides and fountains. Each castle sits next to a natural water source, so all the water used in building the castles returns directly to the environment. Most locations open in late December.
