Ice Lagoon Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Support our channel :
Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers.
It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland. The lake can be seen from Route 1 between Höfn and Skaftafell. It appears as a ghostly procession of luminous blue icebergs.

Ice Lagoon - Icelandic Glacier Lake - Jokulsarlon
The icebergs that calve from the glacier edge move towards the river mouth and get entrenched at the bottom. The movement of the icebergs fluctuates with the tide currents, as well as being affected by wind.
Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, and large icebergs float on the Ice Lagoon.
The icebergs are seen in two shades: milky white and bright blue, which depends on the air trapped within the ice and is an interplay of light and ice crystals.
During the excursion we sail among the huge icebergs in the picturesque scenery of Jökulsárlón in amphibian boat.

Jökulsárlón Glaciar Lagoon- Iceland with a Toddler

This book was an excellent resource to have on our Iceland trip. I highly recommend it:
When I was planning our Iceland adventure, Jökulsárlón Glaciar lagoon was one of the things I was most excited about. The images I saw online jumped out at me, and I was ready to have my mind blown.
That was probably where things went wrong. My expectations were too unrealistic, and I would advise anyone who is tempted to share my enthusiasm to temper those expectations and go with the flow.
I had expected to be drifting through giant floating icebergs so close that I could sweep them with my hand, and feel transported to an arctic world. That’s not what happened.
I should say, very clearly, that this is a place worth visiting. It is beautiful, and unlike anything else you’ll find in most parts of the world.
If you have never been on an amphibious boat, you’ll think this is neat. If you didn’t stop at Sólheimajökull Glacier, you’ll probably love this.
The reality is that ultimately it’s a boat ride in a lake, at a quite reasonable and safe distance from small icebergs that are floating in the water. There is a guide, who provides some insight into the history and current status of the glacier and lagoon, and they give you a chip of glacier ice (which could be tens of thousands of years old) to suck on.
Spoiler: it tastes like clean water.
I really hate to be a downer about it, but the experience of going on the boat is not too different from the experience you have standing on the shore at the side of the lagoon. The price of boarding the boat isn’t terribly expensive, but it’s not cheap either. If you’re travelling on a budget, you may be better to save your money for other activities and view the lagoon from the shore.
If you want to have the experience of riding an amphibious boat in a glacier lagoon, then there probably isn’t a better place in the world to do that. The service is good, the boat seemed safe, and it really is beautiful. I believe the company running the tour did all they could to make it enjoyable.

Iceland: Lagoon of Jökulsárlón - a dream in ice
The Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon in Iceland is one of the dream destinations of this world. As ice floes drift on the water and hundreds of birds break the rippling of the water, it binds you to the magic of the place. Especially as the sun is shining and the crowds are limited. Amphibious boat in Iceberg Lake Iceland part 2
Amphibious boat in Iceberg Lake Iceland. You can take this boat tour while in the area of the lake of Jokulsarlon. Jökulsárlón is the best known and the largest of a number of glacial lakes in Iceland. It is situated at the south end of the glacier Vatnajökull between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Appearing first only in 1934-1935, the lake grew from 7.9 km² in 1975 to at least 18 km² today because of heavy melting of the Icelandic glaciers. Approaching a depth of 200 m, Jökulsárlón is now probably the second deepest lake in Iceland.

Glacial Lake Yokulsarlon Iceland Travel Video
Iceland natural wonders of the country, it seems, is not in vain it was called the land of ice. Yokulsarlon undoubtedly belongs to one of the wonders of Iceland, in its description of the predominant superlatives. Yokulsaarlon translated Lagoon icy river, is the largest glacier lagoon in the country. Located in the east of this splendor of Iceland, the country's capital Reykjavik to glacial ice lagoon 400 km from Skaftafell National Park about 60 km to the east. This area is less populated than other parts of Iceland, but this is compensated by the abundance of natural wonders. When planning to visit this wonder of nature, do not forget to book a hotel in Hofn. Glacial Lagoon stretches at the foot of the largest glacier in Europe Vatnayokudl.
In 1903, the edge of the ice massif Vatnayokudl is 200 meters from the sea. Laguna began to take shape in 1934 as a result of the fact that the glacier began to melt. Today, its size is about 20 square kilometers, and in 1975 it was equal to the total area of 8 square kilometers. The depth of the lake Yokursarlon about 200 m, it is the deepest lake in Iceland. Not surprisingly, the glacier lake is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in the whole world, not just in Iceland - in the rays of the midday sun in the east at sunset and it is an amazing sight. Blue and white ice floes slowly drifting in the icy water from the tip of the glacier Breydamerkuryokudl which is sleeved ice array Vatnayokudl.
The history of the glacial lagoon
It is expected that at the beginning of the 10th century, when the first settlers arrived in Iceland, Vatnajökull ice fields were north of their position with respect to today's 20 km. In 1600 - 1900 goda cold snap here reached its peak, it was a sort of little ice age. In 1910 - 1970 years of frowning warming, which caused major changes in the landscape of Iceland, including the melting of the branch Vatnajökull. Reduced in size, drew Glacier Gorge, which became icy lagoon.
The lake is located in the gorge, which is located at the lowest point of Iceland, so in the warmer months when the tide is diluted with sea water. So too Yokursarlona fauna of the sea, with sea water tides bring with them herring and salmon, followed by the lagoon followed by marine seals, their rookeries in abundance can be seen on the banks of Yokursarlona.
From May to September, tourists can walk on a special boat between icebergs Yokursarlona. With the advent of the Internet search and book hotels in Hofn glacial lagoon is no longer a problem. On the eastern side of the lake in the summer months there is a small restaurant.

Taking a break from our Iceland adventure
A Visit to Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon in December 2016
This is our Day 2 visit to the icy landscape of Iceland, After an overnight stay in Klaustur, we left for Jokulsarlon which is at the south eastern edge of Vatnajokull National Park. It was a tricky drive in the dark morning because of the snow covered road with the passing oncoming traffic. The hilly landscape on the left compared with the flat land on the right which open to the ocean. Jokulsarlon consisted of the lake which formed by the melted glacier with floating icebergs. Later, we drove to the nearby blacksand beach with scattered ice blocks washed ashore by the Atlantic ocean.
