Tourists experience Iceland's midnight sun
(19 Jun 2017) LEADIN
Iceland has topped the 2017 Global Peace Index for the tenth consecutive year.
And as the endless daylight of the summer solstice approaches, the Nordic island is preparing for another successful tourist season.
STORYLINE
The town of Akureyri, Iceland's second largest urban area, stands at head of the country's longest fjord, 60 kilometres (37 miles) south of the Arctic Circle.
Despite the high latitude at the northern tip of the country the climate is mild, with summer temperatures reaching 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit).
From early June until mid July it's also one of the world's best places to watch the Midnight Sun, a natural phenomenon in which the sun never sets.
The northern hemisphere is most inclined towards the sun around June 21 (the summer solstice) which is why the sun doesn't drop below the horizon.
Akureyri is a popular location on the island to ride an Icelandic horse.
This unique breed can be traced back to the 9th century when Norwegian Vikings brought their best horses to Iceland.
Due to Iceland's geographical isolation the breed has remained pure for over a thousand years.
Elena Niederfuhr is a tourist from Germany who is not surprised Iceland has one again topped the World's Global Peace Index.
It is an inspiring and peaceful country, she says, caused by the nature, the clean air and the attitude of the people living here.
In 2010 Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano brought much of the world's air travel to a halt. When it erupted, after two centuries of silence, Europe's airspace was forced to close grounding millions of travellers.
But despite the previous chaos tourists are still keen to visit it!
The Geysir Hot Spring area is another one of the country's most popular tourist spots.
The main attraction here is Strokkur, a geyser that blows water 30 metres (100 feet) into the air every four to eight minutes.
40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Icelandic capital Reykjavik, stands the Blue Lagoon, one of the world's most famous geothermal spas. During the summer season it stays open until late in the night and receives over 400,000 visitors per year.
Its pools holds six million litres of geothermal seawater which originate 2000 metres beneath the ground and are heated by a nearby volcano.
The Blue Lagoon may look like a natural wonder, but it is entirely manmade.
In 1976, a local power company built a geothermal power plant on the site, which is still in operation.
To generate energy steam and hot water is brought up from around 2000 meter below the surface.
As a by-product of the process, cooled water with a distinct blue colour, was released nearby and formed the Blue Lagoon.
Iceland is also home to dozens of magnificent waterfalls.
Gljufurarfoss waterfall is 40 metres (130 feet) high and is partially hidden by a cliff. A few kilometres north stands Gullfoss, which means Golden Waterfall in Icelandic.
This iconic waterfall offers travellers spectacular views, as the water plummets 32 metres (105 feet) into a rugged canyon with walls up to 70 metres (230 feet) in height.
Tigl Degrsem is a tourist from Belgium visiting the waterfall late at night.
It's almost midnight and it's still daylight, he says. It doesn't get dark. It is fantastic to be able to see this.
Extending over 40,000 square kilometres (16,000 square miles), the Icelandic Highlands are among Europe's largest unpopulated areas.
Horses here can be seen outlined by the ghostly glare of the midnight sun.
The icy waters off the coast of Iceland are the perfect location for whale watching especially during summer months.
The cold seas surrounding the island boast a diverse marine life, including over 20 species of large marine mammals such as Orca, minke and blue whales and dolphins.
