Water Quality of Tongue River & Lake Renwick (Icelandic Park, ND) – Part 13
For the initial part (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 etc.) of this experiment the water quality parameters Total Dissolved Solids (TDS in part per million or ppm), pH (- logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration using the base as ten) and Oxy-Reduction Potential (ORP) or Reduction Potential, were measured at the Tongue River and Lake Renwick (Icelandic State Park) near Cavalier, North Dakota (ND), USA.
On July 2, 2019 nitrite testing was also done in addition to TDS, pH and ORP, however the “Nitrite Checker” (brand – Hanna) gave error reading possibly because the high turbidity of the water. High turbidity was due to algal blooms occurring around July 2, 2019 at Lake Renwick.
This is an ongoing water quality project. One of the goals of this project is to develop better nutrient management practices to help prevent algal blooms from occurring.
Part 1 (a, b, and c) - April 22, 2019 (downstream Tongue River in Cavalier)
-
-
-
TDS – 109 – 111 ppm
pH – 7.80
ORP – -300 mV
Part 2 (a, b, c and d) - May 2, 2019 (downstream Tongue River in Cavalier)
-
-
-
-
-
TDS - 151 – 157 ppm
pH – 8.16 (19.4 mV using the Horiba LaquaTwin pH meter)
PH – 7.90 (YSI Ecosence pH meter)
ORP - - 230 mV
Part 3, May 20, 2019 (downstream Tongue River in Cavalier)
-
TDS - 191 – 193 ppm
pH – 8.34
ORP - -221 mV
An interesting observation is a continuous increase in ORP reading starting from April 22 (-300 mV) to May 20, 2019 (-221 mV).
Part 4, June 17, 2019 (Lake Renwick at Icelandic State Park)
-
TDS - 253 – 254 ppm
pH - 8.11
ORP - -204 mV
At Icelandic State Park (Lake Renvick) a further increase of ORP is seen ( -204 mV). The increase for the ORP values over time could be due to decrease in organic matter in the waters. During early spring a lot of organic matter entering the river or lake could result in extremely low ORP, for example –300 mV seen on April 22, 2019.
Water Quality of Tongue River & Lake Renwick (Icelandic Park, ND) – Part 5
On July 2, 2019 nitrite testing was also done in addition to TDS, pH and ORP, however the “Nitrite Checker” (brand – Hanna) gave error reading possibly because the high turbidity of the water. High turbidity was due to algal blooms occurring around July 2, 2019 at Lake Renwick.
Part 5, July 2, 2019 (Lake Renwick at Icelandic State Park)
-
TDS - 282 ppm
pH – 9.07
ORP – -279 mV
Part 6 and Part 7 July 2, 2019 at Lake Renwick (Nitrite testing using HANNA brand nitrite Checker) – This sample was not filtered, this was probably why an error reading was given by the instrument. Algae growth at the lake was at an extreme on this day.

On July 24, 2019 three locations were sampled. The first location (Part 8) was the Tongue River at Cavalier which is downstream of Lake Renwick located in Icelandic Park. The second location (Part 9) was Lake Renwick at Icelandic State Park. The third location (Part 10was the Tongue River upstream of Lake Renvick.
Part 8, July 24, 2019 (downstream Tongue River in Cavalier)
-
TDS - 247 ppm
pH - 8.23
ORP – -181 mV
Part 9, July 24, 2019 (Lake Renwick at Icelandic State Park)
-
TDS - 251 ppm
pH - 8.75
ORP – -210 mV
Part 10, July 24, 2019 (Upstream Tongue River near Highway 5)
-
TDS - 360 ppm
pH - 8.0
ORP – missed measuring !!!! - The video unexpectedly stops recording !!!
Part 11, July 31, 2019 (downstream Tongue River in Cavalier)
-
ORP – -247 mV (temperature 25.3 C)
TDS - 286 ppm
pH - 7.95 (relatively low for the Red Valley of Minnesota/North Dakota, temperature 25.3 C)
Part 12, July 31, 2019 ((Lake Renwick at Icelandic State Park))
-
ORP – -233 mV (temperature 26.5 C)
TDS - 234 ppm
pH - 8.93 mV (temperature 26.3 C)
Part 13, July 31, 2019 (Upstream Tongue River near Highway 5)
Please note that the Tongue River at this point had stop flowing due to the drought of the time. Here the measurement were done on a stagnant pool of water. That is probably why the TDS was very high at 0ver 360 ppm
-
ORP – -247 mV (temperature 24.4 C)
TDS - 362 ppm
pH - 7.93 (temperature 24,2 C)
