Icheon (Korean pronunciation: [i.tɕʰʌn]) is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It should not be confused with the much larger Incheon Metropolitan City. Neighboring districts include Yeoju City, Gwangju City, Yongin City, and Anseong City within Gyeonggi Province, as well as Eumseong County in North Chungcheong Province. Together with Yeoju, Icheon is known as a center of South Korean ceramic manufacturing and is a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art. Other famous local products include peaches and rice. Local institutions of higher learning include Korea Tourism College and Chungkang College of Cultural Industries.
The Yeongdong Expressway and Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway pass through Icheon. In 2016, the city will connect into the Seoul Metropolitan Subway via Yeoju Line's Icheon Station.[2]
Icheon is home to Hynix, the world's second largest memory chip maker.
The Icheon Ceramics Village features 300-plus ceramics-making firms in the area of Sugwang-ri, Sindun-myeon, Saeum-dong, and a popular visitor attraction.[7] They use traditional skills and produce porcelains in some 40 traditional firewood kilns. This pottery is recognized both at home and abroad for its quality.
The Saeum-dong and Sindun-myeon areas also include a ceramics village with many ceramics stores. Potters have researched traditional methods and revived the manufacture of ceramics in the style of Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain here. The village is the center of the effort to preserve these traditions.

Icheon Ceramics Village produces traditional Korean ceramics, which are of high quality. The village became the center of traditional pottery during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) for about 500 years due to the easily obtainable materials in the areas. Icheon Ceramics Village was also the center of Joseon Baekja ceramics. Presently, about 80 pottery factories are congregated at the village, and about 300 pottery kilns are in use.
Visitors can observe the pottery production process, and purchase them directly. It is worthwhile to see the crafts of these potters known as Living Cultural Treasures of Korea for creating the highest quality handicrafts. Not only are the traditional Cheongja, Baekja, and Buncheong pottery produced here, but you can also view modern design pottery. The Haegang Ceramics Art Center is the only ceramics Art Center in Korea, where you can learn about ceramics. One of the must-see events at Icheon Ceramics Village is the internationally famous “Icheon Ceramics Festival” held every year. Displayed pottery as well as, pottery classes, traditional kiln handling, pottery character show, and even parades are held.

Today's adventure takes us to Icheon which is known for there ceramics and rice. We dined at a traditional Hanjeongsik style restaurant. This is where your dinner is all banchans or only side dishes! (My friend pointed out a more modern fusion style around the corner.)
This was a perfect time to be introduced to 누룽지 (Nuroungji)
Afterwards we went to the Icheon Pottery Village!

1946년생
2002년 대한민국 명장 선정.
세창 김세용 명장은 1966년 도예에 입문해 81년 전승공예전 입선을 시작으로 97년 도자기공모전 금상 수상 등 다양한 수상경력과 더불어 세계 여러나라에서 초대전을 가졌다.
1999년 영국 엘리자베스 여왕이 방한 했을때 2중 투각국화과형 화병을 선물한 투각의 개가로 청강문화산업대학 도예과 초빙교수를 역임했고 여러 국제대회 워크숍에 대표작가로 참여하기도 했다.

Icheon Ceramics : 항산요 임항택 명장[Lim, Hang-Taek]_[1947~2019]
1947년 충북 음성에서 출생한 임항택 도예 명장은 미술 교사로 재직하던 시절 도예에 입문, 경기도 이천에 터전을 잡고 전통가마로 도자기를 만들며 진사백자를 연구하는 데에 전념했다. 1997년 정밀기술진흥대회 도자 부문에서 금상을 수상, 2002년 도자기공예기능사를 취득한 그는 2004년 도자기 공예 부문 대한민국 명장에 선정됐고, 2005년에는 진사 안료 제조방법 및 안료를 특허 등록했다.
이후 황금 진사 안료 개발에 성공한 그는 현재도 진사백자를 연구하고 제자를 양성하는 데 큰 힘을 기울이고 있다.

Koryo Celadon (Korean Ceramics)
83-year-old Potter Yu is seen creating ceramic vases using techniques developed during the Koryo Dynasty in Korea a thousand years ago. He works with his sons and creates a hundred at a time, with one featuring a carved pattern of a dragon biting its own tale. They bake them all night in the kiln and in the morning they break into pieces any that are deemed imperfect. At the end a poem is read over shots of the finished pieces and includes these lines:
Howe'er, this is a dream of a thousand years, Koryo Celadon/
Hue, oh the hue, casting a shadow in secrecy, the laudable hue

송월요 김종호 명장의 작업영상입니다.
2대 김종호 명장은 선친인 1대 김완배 선생의 아들로 소년시절 도자에 입문해 50여년의 세월 동안 13세기 이후 단절되었던 고려 청자의 아름다움을 되살리는데 매진하셨습니다. 2년전 선보인 이천세라믹 1탄 김성태 작가(3대)의 아버님이십니다. 김성태 작가님 아드님이 도자를 계승하니 벌써 4대째 이어진 도자가문이라 할 수 있겠네요. 2003년 이천도자기명장에 선정되었고 현재까지 한국 도자 발전에 큰 기여를 하고 계십니다.

The American Museum of Ceramic Art is honored to present ICHEON: Reviving the Korean Ceramics tradition, an unprecedented exhibition organized by Icheon, South Korea. Icheon has a history of ceramic culture that began over 5000 years ago and has a reputation for its internationally renowned ceramics cultural events. Now Icheon has reached out to an American institution for the very first time. As the premiere exhibition of its kind in the United States, ICHEON will present over 230 objects never before seen on American soil that exemplify the revival of the ceramics tradition in Korea from antique techniques to contemporary innovations.
About AMOCA
Founded in 2001 and opened in September, 2004, AMOCA is one of the few museums in the United States devoted exclusively to ceramic art and historic innovations in ceramic technology. It is located in an area abounding with ceramic history and internationally recognized clay artists from the Arts and Crafts Movement, the 60's Clay Revolution and the current Studio Pottery Era. Geographically, the building is located in an urban downtown district where art is an important element of the continuing and successful community revitalization program. The home community consists of a rich ethnic mix and a large academic constituency with approximately fifteen institutions of higher learning within an eight-mile radius.

한청 김복한 명장의 작업 영상입니다.
경남 마산 출생. 도자기를 하신 형님들의 영향을 받아 도자기를 시작 하게 되었다는 김복한 명장님. 16세때 부터 큰형인 김응한 선생님께 도자를 배우고 인천으로 건너가 변산 위군섭 선생님에게 도자를 배우게 됐습니다. 이후 이천에서 해강 유근형 선생님에게 13년간 고려청자 기술을 전수 받아 1982년 한청도예연구소를 설립하게 됩니다.

또 도자기 그릇에 직접 요리를 담아내는 디스플레이 교육도 함께 진행하며 이천 도예인들의 전폭적인 지지를 받고 있는 것으로 알려지고 있다.
이번 컨설팅을 통해 개발된 제품들은 9월 7일부터 5일간 전 세계 60개국 3000여 개 업체가 참여한 가운데 프랑스 파리에서 열리는 세계 최대 홈리빙 박람회인 메종 오브제 파리(Maison&Objet Paris)에 선을 보인다.

이천 예스파크에 놀러갔습니다. 꽃과 도자기가 어울어진 도자기마을인데요. 건물들도 다 예쁘고 다양하고 볼게 많은 공방들이 많이 있었어요. 도자기 제품들을 많이 찍지는 못했지만 대신 귀여운 고양이와 강아지들을 많이 찍었습니다.
