South Korea ???????? - Icheon Ceramics Village (이천도예마을) - SK - 이천시
19, Gyeongchung-daero 3150beon-gil, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do
경기도 이천시 신둔면 경충대로3150번길 19
Icheon Ceramics Village produces traditional Korean ceramics, which are of high quality. The village became the center of traditional pottery during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) for about 500 years due to the easily obtainable materials in the areas. Icheon Ceramics Village was also the center of Joseon Baekja ceramics. Presently, about 80 pottery factories are congregated at the village, and about 300 pottery kilns are in use.
Visitors can observe the pottery production process, and purchase them directly. It is worthwhile to see the crafts of these potters known as Living Cultural Treasures of Korea for creating the highest quality handicrafts. Not only are the traditional Cheongja, Baekja, and Buncheong pottery produced here, but you can also view modern design pottery. The Haegang Ceramics Art Center is the only ceramics Art Center in Korea, where you can learn about ceramics. One of the must-see events at Icheon Ceramics Village is the internationally famous “Icheon Ceramics Festival” held every year. Displayed pottery as well as, pottery classes, traditional kiln handling, pottery character show, and even parades are held.

Icheon (Korean pronunciation: [i.tɕʰʌn]) is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It should not be confused with the much larger Incheon Metropolitan City. Neighboring districts include Yeoju City, Gwangju City, Yongin City, and Anseong City within Gyeonggi Province, as well as Eumseong County in North Chungcheong Province. Together with Yeoju, Icheon is known as a center of South Korean ceramic manufacturing and is a UNESCO City of Crafts and Folk Art. Other famous local products include peaches and rice. Local institutions of higher learning include Korea Tourism College and Chungkang College of Cultural Industries.
The Yeongdong Expressway and Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway pass through Icheon. In 2016, the city will connect into the Seoul Metropolitan Subway via Yeoju Line's Icheon Station.[2]
Icheon is home to Hynix, the world's second largest memory chip maker.
The Icheon Ceramics Village features 300-plus ceramics-making firms in the area of Sugwang-ri, Sindun-myeon, Saeum-dong, and a popular visitor attraction.[7] They use traditional skills and produce porcelains in some 40 traditional firewood kilns. This pottery is recognized both at home and abroad for its quality.
The Saeum-dong and Sindun-myeon areas also include a ceramics village with many ceramics stores. Potters have researched traditional methods and revived the manufacture of ceramics in the style of Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain here. The village is the center of the effort to preserve these traditions.

Whang Chong-nye: Placid Dynamism
황종례: 부드러운 힘
Sometimes one person really can make a difference.
And that′s exactly what one of Korea′s first female contemporary ceramic artists was able to accomplish.
Our Yim Yoonhee met with the master craftsman for this story. Submerged in a shower of leaves,... caressed by the cool crisp air,... the colors of the wind.
It′s a window into the rhythm of nature,... but here, this window is made from the earth itself.
Ceramic artist Whang Chong-nye molds and shapes the cool clay of mother earth into works of art,... she′s mastered the ability to emulate the fluidity of the natural world and apply it to our every day life.
[KOREAN]
Ceramics is a necessary tool in life, both in the past and even in today′s world.
I took an artistic approach to the everyday ceramics while including elements of today′s generation,... to create these works, that can still be considered a necessary part of life.
These beautiful grounds have inspired Whang for the past 40 years,... it′s where she lives, breathes, and works with her ceramics,... something that has grown embedded into her life.
In every corner, evidence of the art form can be found, making a bold statement, or simply accentuating the beauty of nature.
Whang comes from a family of master ceramic artists, and she herself has also become a master, recognized especially for her exceptional use of ,... the soft brush strokes found on almost all of her works.
It′s through these strokes that she captures movement, and the fluidity of nature,... something she hopes reflects the inspirations she finds in the natural world.
[KOREAN]
I create three layers and then add three more for a total of 6 layers.
That makes the strokes look continuous and 3 dimensional, resulting in a very lively effect,... that′s the whole point of which is what I wanted to explore./
Culture is always moving forward, but we have to allow it to create history.
And to do so, now days younger generation artists are matching today′s culture, reflecting the modern day./
So like with these works, it′s more of a statement piece,... something very abstract which is the direction I think the future is headed in.
Nobody knows for certain what the future may hold, but what is known is what we′ve seen in the past.
Like Whang shows influences of the traditional depicted in a modern day, several years down the line, the future may show influences of what we see today.
Yim Yoonhee, Arirang News.

Nam-Lin Hur - Korean Tea Bowls in the World of Japanese Wabicha in Premodern Times
Nam Center for Korean Studies Colloquium Series
3/14/2012
Nam-lin Hur, Professor, Department of Asian Studies, The University of British Columbia
Korean Tea Bowls in the World of Japanese Wabicha in Premodern Times
For more than two centuries from the mid-sixteenth to mid-eighteenth centuries, one particular item dominated the fashion of wabicha, a form of tea ceremony, in Japan. This item were tea bowls imported from Korea, commonly called Korai chawan, or Korean tea bowls. Korean tea bowls held the key to the evolving aesthetic of wabicha which was much fostered by Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591) and inherited by other eminent tea masters in Tokugawa Japan. Despite their prominence in the world of wabicha, Korean tea bowls have not often been studied. In this talk, Hur explores the cultural trajectory of Korean tea bowls in the world of Japanese wabicha within the framework of trade and piracy, border-crossing cultural flow, war and diplomacy, diaspora, acculturation, and ethnocentrism in premodern East Asia.
