Omanto Matsuri Preview
You cannot hear a thing! Just wanted to show you
guys what I saw when I walked into the park. They are celebrating the Omanto Festival.
Aichi Prefecture, on the first weekend each October.
Its origin is not known, but it is believed that the festival started in the beginning of 1800, when horses were dedicated to the Kasuga and Yatsurugi Shrines to pray for rain. The festival is said to be the biggest in the Nishi-mikawa region.
In the festival, young men wearing happi festival coats and jikatabi rubber-soled socks enter a riding arena of about 100 meters in circumference and start running toward horses that have been decorated with bells and flowers. They grab the horses' muzzles and run around the arena at a fast speed.
In precincts of the Omanto Shrine there is a rounded square preserved solely for this festival. On the day of the event, 40 ~ 50 horses are gathered from seven neighboring towns and released in the square. All participants running with horses become as if they were one with the horse, and a powerful and exciting scene unfolds in front of a big crowd of spectators.

World Bonsai convention delights visitors
(28 Apr 2017) LEADIN:
The World Bonsai Convention has returned to Japan for the first time in 28 years.
Bosnia enthusiasts from across the world are attending the event to learn more about these ancient and majestic miniature trees.
STORYLINE:
This miniature tree is over five hundred years old.
The tiny bonsai tree called Shinpaku was one of the star attractions at the 8th World Bonsai Convention, which has returned to Japan for the first time in almost three decades.
Its custodian is a man called Shinji Suzuki, a Japanese bonsai master, who has been awarded the Prime Minister's award a record five times.
He says the tree had grown on a mountainside in very tough conditions and was first removed from its location one hundred years ago.
Since then it has been living in a vase, and cared for with love and attention by several masters as it was passed down from generation to generation.
He says he feels a great sense of responsibility to take care of such a masterpiece, especially thinking of all the care and attention that others before him had put in.
It is 500 years old but it was 100 years ago when it was removed from its location and 10 years ago I inherited it into my care. I have looked after it ever since with love. Every day I give it water and as I do, I feel the responsibility of continuing what my predecessors have done for this tree.
Suzuki was very excited about the success of the convention. This is truly a great international event, he says.
The convention runs from April 28th to April 30th, at Saitama City which known as the home of the bonsai.
The main exhibition was held at the Saitama Super Arena but several venues around the city, such as the Musashi Ichinomiya Hikawa Jinja Shrine, also had bonsai on exhibit to the delight of visitors.
The first exhibition was held in Japan 28 years ago and this is the first time it is being held in Japan since then. Over the last three decades it was held in many countries across the globe, including the U.S., China, and Korea.
One visitor from Germany, Juergen Carocci, says Japan is the spiritual home of Bonsai.
The level of bonsai in the world, what I think, is the highest in Japan. Still the other countries are working and working and working, they are coming and coming but the level is still higher here and that was the reason for me to come.
The age of the tree is not important, he adds, saying that your connection to the plant is more important.
I think it's not really important how old the tree is. Important is the style of the tree and how it looks and how is the thinking (feeling) you have to the tree because the tree also can be only maybe 50 years old. If it looks like an old tree and everything is coming to you, that's the same as a tree that's 500 years. We have a lot of trees that are 500 years and tell me nothing, says Carocci.
One of the sections of the exhibition contained bonsai on loan from the Imperial Household and especially brought to Saitama for the occasion including several bonsai that were 500 years old.
Many bonsai enthusiasts attended the two-hour long shaping demonstration sessions held sometimes simultaneously on different stages, by both Japanese and international bonsai masters.
Werner M. Busch, a bonsai master from Germany says the time constraint was the biggest pressure.
He says he and his team worked hard and did the best the could but that really they were trying to condense into two hours what normally takes a lifetime.
We worked under a lot of pressure. Normally we would work on a tree like this for much longer, even a whole lifetime. We did all we could in this short amount of time. With more time we would be able to take better care of it and obtain more refined results.
