6:30 a.m. breakfast at the Toyoko Inn Ichinoseki Ekimae. I kinda sorta remembered the instructions the lady at the tourist information center talked to me about yesterday and caught the train out to Geibikei Gorge. Walked a little bit and got to the river boat pier. The tourist information lady gave me a discount coupon so my 1600-yen ticket only cost me 1440-yen. Not too shabby yeh? We had to take off our shoes and sit on mats. Then the boatman pushed us with his pole upriver for about 30-35 minutes. The boatman kept up constant chatter giving all kinds of info and telling jokes but it was all in Japanese so most was lost on me! The water was pretty clear and you could see a lot of fishes swimming with the boat. They sell fish feed pellets for 50-yen per packet and lots of the folks bought ‘em and fed the fishes along the way. They had some really big fat koi, mostly the darker plain ones. I only saw one orange and one yellowish koi that looked pretty nice. They let us off the boat to walk around on shore for about 15-20 minutes. Then we headed down stream back to the pier. On the way back, the boatman sang a coupla long, nice, I guess boatman songs. We ended up back at the pier a little later than I estimated so I missed my planned train to the city. Killed time by having lunch at a restaurant by the river.
Then I caught the train back to Ichinoseki, went to the tourist information center for a refresher course on how to catch the bus to my next tourist spot. Then I stepped outside to the bus station and caught daBus to Genbikei Gorge to transfer to another bus to visit the Takkoku No Iwa Shrine. Had about 20 minutes at Genbikei so I rushed around and took some pictures of the gorge before rushing to the transfer point for the next bus. Genbikei Gorge is nice and scenic but the river is shallow and narrow so no boat ride here. Caught the next bus to Takkoku No Iwa Shrine. This shrine is about 1200 years old and is built into the mountain side, is touted as the shrine in a cave but it is stretching it as it is in a very shallow cave. Caught the bus back to the train/bus station, got myself an eki-ben and ate it back in the hotel.
MY RITUAL WAGYU DINNER IN ICHINOSEKI JAPAN
Last year I went on a foodie adventure through Japan. My first stop was the city of Ichinoseki in Iwate Prefecture. It's about three hours north of Tokyo.
This is a ceremonial, ritual dinner we had with local government and business leaders. The highlight was the Iwate wagyu beef, cooking on a table top shabu shabu grill.
During my trip I visited a few areas of the country recognized by Savor Japan ( as having special culinary significance.

Explore Regional Flavors Visiting the Hidden Village PartI
Japanese cuisine has been developing various unique food cultures by region depending on their climate and history. Because Japan has plentiful mountains and oceans as well as distinct four seasons, there are many food ingredients grown in the land, and it turn into local specialties called “Kyodo-ryori” dwelling local’s nature and culture, which has been passed down from generation to generation. With the blessing of nature, “Kyodo-ryori” carrying delicate but rich flavor, is presenting Japanese commitment to dish as well as their history and culture. In this program series, our reporters meet the locals and discover a traditional way of life and the local cuisine of the hidden village.
In Part I of the two-part series, writer Rebecca Milner visits a “hidden village” in the Nishi-Awa area of Tokushima prefecture, located in the center of Shikoku island. In this mountain village, called “Sora” (meaning “Sky” in Japanese), traditional soba meals and dishes using dried vegetables and game meat have been passed down through the generations.
The program introduces these time-tested dishes, along with local wisdom for life on a 45-degree slope.
We also introduce raclette cheese from Tokachi, Hokkaido, famous for dairy farming; and rice cake dishes from Ichinoseki, Iwate prefecture, where it is customary to eat rice cakes throughout the year.

Japan drone flights - Ichinoseki and Tokachi with Yuneec Typhoon H
I just returned from an amazing adventure throughout Japan and took my Yuneec Typhoon H drone along with me. Having the whole thing in a backpack carrying case made it easy to transport and it fits in an overhead compartment on a plane or on a bus seat next to me. Here are some views of the Ichinoseki area and the Tokachi area of Hokkaido. I had just gotten the drone a few days before my trip and these were the second and third flights I had ever done with it.
