Gunmen Storm Kabul Mosque, At Least Two Dead

According to officials on Friday, at least two people were killed and eight others injured when gunmen stormed a Shiite mosque in the Afghan capital of Kabul. While worshippers were attending Friday prayers, an assailant blew himself up at the gate of the Imam Zaman Mosque, three gunmen then entered the mosque and opened fire on security forces inside. Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said that special forces units were on the scene of the ongoing situation, and that security forces had reported killing two assailants. At least two police officers have also been killed in the attack.

Abdul Rahman Mosque
The Abdul Rahman Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of Kabul, is one of the largest mosques in Afghanistan. It is located in one of Kabul's commercial areas called Deh Afghanan, near the Pashtunistan Square and across from the once popular Plaza Hotel. The building is a three story, which is built on 3.5 acres of land. One floor of the building is dedicated to women only. The mosque is named after an influential Afghan businessman named Hajji Abdul Rahman.

Jama Masjid of Herat
The Jama Masjid of Herat, also known as the Masjid-i Jami' of Herat, and the Great Mosque of Herat is a mosque in the city of Herat, in the Herat Province of north-western Afghanistan. It was built by Ghurids, the famous Sultan Ghayas-ud-Din Ghori, who laid its foundation in 1200 AD, and later extended by several rulers as Herat changed rulers down the centuries from the Timurids, to the Safavids, to the Mughals and the Uzbeks, all of whom supported the mosque.

The Masjid Sabz or Green Mosque is a mosque in the city of Balkh, in northern Afghanistan. It is believed to be have been commissioned by the then ruler of the Eastern Timurid Empire, Shah Rukh, or by his wife Goharshad.

Id Gah Mosque
Id Gah Mosque or Eid Gah Mosque is the second largest mosque in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. It is considered the cardinal religious mosque in the country, where a million people offer Eid prayers twice a year. It is located near the Mahmud Khan bridge and National Stadium in the eastern part of the city, in the Shar-e-barq of Kabul, which is one of the wealthier areas of the city. The 'Id Gah' means Prayer Ground .

STORYLINE:

Kabul's sports stadium, used as a venue for executions and amputations under the Taliban, has been reopened for football matches.

Teams are now competing for places in the local league.

Football never disappeared under the draconian Taliban rule, but players were forced to wear long robes instead of shorts, and games were strictly controlled.

Often, the promise of a football match would lure several thousand people to the stadium, only to find that a public execution or amputation had been scheduled by the ruling Taliban instead.

Crowds of would-be football fans would be forced to watch.

Now the only trouble here is that generated by the fans themselves, as seen in football stadiums all over the world.

But for some the violence that came to characterise the stadium under the Taliban is hard to forget.

This man lost his leg after stepping on a mine.

He was then accused of being a thief by local Taliban leaders - a claim he strongly denies - and had his hand amputated at the stadium.
