Ida Bay Railway
A ride on the most southern railway operating in Australia. The Ida Bay Railway travels along a line that once transported limestone to a jetty at Deep Hole. This was used in the manufacture of acetylene. Originally a steam engine was used but nowadays a small diesel loco takes passengers along a scenic line that runs close to the shores of Jagers Bay. On the way you stop at a burial site of early pioneers and hear stories of the past. Finishing at Deep Hole Bay you can stroll along the beach of walk to Southport Lagoon and Southport Bluff, the site of a terrible maritime disaster.
Our walk will be in a subsequent video clip.

Ida Bay Railway
Serendipity is the art of stumbling across beauty or pleasure when you least expect it, and the Ida Bay Railway was, for us, pure serendipity. We had driven as far south from Hobart as we could in our hire car - dirt roads were forbidden to us - and we spotted the train in its station and on a whim decided to take the ride.
The pace was slow, the scenery inspiring, the driver made a most informative guide. I can thoroughly recommend the Ida Bay narrow guage railway.
Ida Bay railway trip in the far south Tasmania - Australia
The Ida Bay Railway is the last operating bush tramway in Tasmania.... and Australia's Southern-Most Locomotive, located at 328 Lune River Road, Lune River Tasmania (Australia). My daughter and I enjoyed quite a bit the 14 Km round trip in a Malcolm Moore antic train as you can see in this video :-)

Ida Bay Railway - Australia's southern most railway
The Ida Bay Railway is the last operating Bush tramway in Tasmania. It is also the southern most railway in Australia. The journey, a pleasant 14km round trip lasts 2 hours. The reward for taking this 2 foot narrow gauge line is a stunning beach. For true get-a-way from it all.
This is a must on the things to do while in Tasmania. The railway is only a 2 hour drive from the capital city, Hobart and once here its a real struggle to want to leave.

We reached the end of the line and had a picnic lunch before heading back to our car.
Tasmania, Southport Lagoon Trek on Ida Bay Railway
Take the gorgoeus little train to the end of the line then walk the hour or so to the lagoon, wonderful day, even in the rain. Evidently, in Summer, there's a few snakes - or more, but we didn't see any...
A trip on the Ida Bay Railway
In the far south of Tasmania the Ida Bay Railway meanders through the bush to Deep Hole (beach and bay).
It takes about 40 minutes each way.
Lovely.
