Weber Rapid 7/28/14 Idaho River Journeys
Weber Rapid on 7/28/14. This is a terrific rapid on day 5 (7/24/14 launch) in Impassable Canyon. After the initial drop, there's a bonus hole half way through the rapid which some guides go for and others opt to maneuver around. Matt decided to take the hit, which then grabbed the GoPro and sent it swimming. After running the hole, he glanced back and saw that it was about to take a final dive and he managed to reach down and grab it before he lost it for good.

The Middle Fork of the Salmon River, home of the Shoshone-Bannock Tuka-Deka
The Middle Fork of the Salmon flows through the heart of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. As you travel the 104 miles of the Middle Fork, you will see many cultural values present on the river banks of the Middle Fork. This is the home of the Tuka-Deka Sheep Eaters Native American Tribes. The Tuka-Deka were hunter-gatherer people who lived in the river corridor area until 1879. The Sheep Eater war of 1879 ended the permanent residence of the ancestors to the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, the Tuka-Deka.
The Middle Fork of the Salmon has many irreplaceable cultural resources. Many of the sites have house depressions left behind by the Sheep Eater Indian Tribes. Please respect these sites by camping in designated areas. And leave artifacts where you find them. Help us preserve the stories of the past that are all over the river corridor in the form of pictographs by not touching them.
As river users, you can be active stewards in protecting the resources for future generations to enjoy as you visit the Middle Fork of the Salmon.

Take a journey to Shepp Ranch, Idaho, U.S.A.
I took a hike along the Salmon River, in the Gospel Hump Wilderness, and Clearwater mountains to visit my friends at Shepp Ranch. Here is a vignette of the journey. It included high country hiking and camping, river camps, all kinds of jet boat rides, with Wes at Shepp (that is Wes and me going down through Chittam rapids at 45,000 cfs), a wild bronco rapid ride with Buck at Mackay Bar Outfiitters (up and down Chittam a couple times), an entire day with Heinze at Whitewater Expeditions, going from Shepp, to Corn Creek through nearly the entirety of the wilderness stretch on the Salmon River. Two flights in my friend Dave Looney's 1995 Maule, before the hike to scout trail, and drop off beer. Dave also came in for a day with the family while we were out there. And over 30 miles of hiking in and out from Shepp, and up Crooked Creek from the ranch. All of it revolved around the Salmon River. North Americas largest un-damed wild river, carving through some of the most rugged, and remote backcountry in the U.S.A.

To Love A Place - Idaho's Main Salmon River
Conservation of wild rivers has to start with love. Amy Kober has spent the last 18 years of her career dedicated to saving waterways with American Rivers.
In an effort to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wild & Scenic Rivers Act in 2018, American Rivers is working to protect 5,000 miles of new Wild and Scenic Rivers and one million acres of riverside land protected over the next five years.
In addition to the powerful conservation goal, American Rivers along with NRS, YETI, and O.A.R.S., have launched the 5,000 Miles of Wild campaign: embarking on a mission to tell the stories of America’s rivers and the people who love them—from whitewater boaters and avid anglers, to families and urban dwellers who enjoy backyard escapes.
“By collecting personal stories from people across America, we will show how rivers connect all of us and send one clear and unified message to our elected leaders: our rivers are worth saving,” Amy said. “Our aim is to recruit, engage and empower a lasting army of people speaking up to protect our rivers and clean water.”

Riggins Idaho Drive Thru. Near Salmon & Snake Rivers and Hells Canyon!
The now friendly town of Riggins was once known as “Gouge Eye” after a vicious saloon fight in which the obvious happened between a couple of rough and tumble citizens who came here in search of gold in the 1850’s.
Riggins lies between the two deepest gorges in North America and rides the banks of the Little Salmon River and the famous Salmon River, the longest free-flowing river within the lower 48 states. Adventures east take you up the Salmon River to the “River of No Return” Wilderness, a name that the Indians used to warn Lewis and Clark; and also captured the spirit of Captain Guleke’s adventures in his one-way scow trips.
Turn west and adventures take you to the Snake River and Hells Canyon. This spectacular setting makes an ideal home base to explore areas of recreation, history, and scenic beauty.

Chinook Salmon Fishing- Salmon River Idaho
This is a short tribute to the unique Chinook Salmon of Idaho. These fish travel 900+ miles of freshwater alone swimming up the current of raging rivers for the second longest salmon migration inland in the world. In fact, some chinook PIT tagged in Idaho have been found in commercial fishing nets off the coast of Alaska and Japan! Its a journey of constant strife as they elude predators both human and beast to return to nearly the identical location where they were born in the mountains of Idaho 2-6yrs later. Even after swimming nearly a thousand miles without eating and losing 30-50% of their body mass, a 20# Chinook can snap 40# test and straighten a 3/0 hook going upstream! Truly an amazing fish and an Icon of the Northwest that salmon anglers of Idaho hold above the rest!
