Idaikattur ~ Sacred Heart of Jesus Shrine / Believed as built by 153 Angels
On the bank of the River Vaigai, away from the noises and pollution of the city life, there is a beautiful, simple, and silent village called as Idaikattur, where there has been one celestial church, on earth, which is nothing but, the abode of the sacred heart of Jesus, who welcomes you all to this miraculous shrine, where numerous people are getting healed, and their petitions have been granted at once.
This Idaikattur church had been erected in 1886, which is now under the control of Sivagangai diocese, Tamil Nadu, India. On1886, when father Ferdinand celle, a French priest, who is assumed charge, as its parish priest, he decided to build a bigger and proper church, in place of the thatched structure. He went to France, for collecting funds, from there to accomplish this task.
There had been an Anglican lady in France, called as Mary Anne, who had been suffering from an incurable and acute disease in her heart. She spent a lot of money, to get rid of the disease, but all in vain. Having seen her, in that pitiable condition, one man belonged to Roman catholic, suggested that she could pray to the sacred heart of Jesus, even though, she belonged to Anglican church, for her remedy.
Having touched by the heartfelt suggestion of that Roman Catholic man, Mary Anne put faith on the sacred heart of Jesus, and had a 'Novena', to the sacred heart of Jesus. Novena, is the word related to Roman Catholic Church, that a devotion, consisting of prayers or services on nine consecutive days. What a surprise! During the 'Novena' itself, she had been completely cured. The doctor also certified the same.
During the fundraising campaign in France, father Ferdinand, happened to meet Mary Anne. That time, she explained to father Ferdinand that what had happened to her, and about her wish of building one church, for the sacred heart of Jesus, in India. Father Fertinand accepted whole heartedly, that it might have been located in his parish, Idaikattur. Marry Anne had put forward one request, that the church to be built in India, should have been the same replica, of the 'Rheims Cathedral' in France.
The uniqueness of this church has been as follows. This church is an architectural wonder, with French style of Gothic architecture, and a vaulted roof supported by columns, with cantilevers. These columns have been connected to a circular terra cottaring with openings. The one thing to be noted, as well, to be astonished, has been that the entire structure was constructed by the local masons, who only saw the model of the Rheims Cathedral.
Again, this has been the shrine where 153 Angels figures have been kept, in order to mark that the angels had built this church. Father Ferdinand celle placed 153 angels, some on the altar, some on the walls, in and around the church, which had been made in plaster, stained glasses. It's been also symbolizing the 'Nine choirs’ angels, whereas, if 153 has been totaled, as 1+5+3, it should come as nine.
The miracle about this shrine has been something unbelievable, that it's been an engineering marvel, that the church has its foundation, of only three feet in depth, and one could find it as a miracle, that how could the church have been standing for the last 120 years.

Kamanayakkanpatti played an important part in the former Madurai Mission and might be considered as the Mother Church for the southern region. It was also the center of evangelization in the Tirunelveli inland territory at the end of the 17th and 18th centuries. It had covered up Srivilliputhur (north-west), Vadakkankulam (south), Tenkasi (South-west) and the inland areas in the East.
In 1664 Fr. Freyre visited this area and found that there were Christians already here. In 1684, a small church was built by Rev. Fr. John De Britto, when he visited and made this place as the center for the missionary activities. Fr. Xavier Porgheese was the first parish priest who resided here and administered the Sacraments. It was the first time that K.N.P. was mentioned in
the records of the history.Around the year 1690, it is said that a girl fell into an open well and died, while the parents and the villagers pleaded to Our Lady, she was miraculously brought back to life. Fr. Beschi came over during 1712-1715 and stayed here to learn the local language. It was at this time that he inculturated the Christian faith into the Indian culture. It was at his time that the Church was named as the Our Lady of Assumption
In 1728 the Church was several times visited by thieves and plundered the village. It is said that a thief, stealing the image of Our Lady and was about to carry it away, when all on a sudden, he became blind. Around 1748 the old Church of K.N.P. was completely burnt down by some evil forces against the Christian faith, yet the statue of Our Lady remained unstained and was saved. Though it was a time of severe famine, the Christians rebuilt it against the thought of their enemies and with divine providence. Fr. Lawrence de Almeyda in charge of Mannargudi or Mannarcoil, falling sick on his way to the Coast, died at K.N.P, on the first of February 1748 after receiving the last sacraments. He was known as Rajendra swami, and his tomb can be seen even today at K.N.P.There was an interval of 82 years from 1756 to 1838. During this time there were no priests, sacraments, Eucharist.etc, yet people stood firm in their faith by their popular devotion to Our Lady, with the help of the local catechists. Then Fr. Alexander Martin, known as Visuvasanandarswami accompanied by Fr. Mousset M.E.P., was the first Jesuit to visit K.N.P. Both celebrated the feast of the Assumption in 1838. Fr. Alexander was firm in removing the discrimination on the basis of caste and getting settled in the beginning of the twentieth century. After him Fr. J. Maria Dass extended the Church and built the present one with much elegance and style. It has a beautiful sanctuary, altar and stands on twelve pillars signifying the twelve apostles.
As the beginning of the jubilee year (325) and an honor to Our Lady, the ROSARY GARDEN was built with leading of Rev.Fr. Arulambrose (2005-2010) and it is convenient for people to pray the rosary at all times. It is slowly gaining its lost importance. This parish is known all over for its significant and unique devotions to Our Lady called “Kumbidu Sevai”, which tells the emptiness of human before God. This has got very many cultural impacts among the people and still holds the faith of the people. This is the first place where the practice of Car procession was introduced by Fr. Beschi. Now many people flock to this place of grace and also experience the hand of God in their prayers and give thanks to God the Almighty through Our Lady. Last year, this mission has celebrated 325th jubilee year, many are visiting and honoring Our Mother. People from all over the country come over here through out the year and worship Our Lady.
Siddhar Idaikkadar ~ who interchanged the place of Navagrahas / Shrine at Idaikattur *
Idaikkadar shrine at Idaikattur,near Manamadurai,Tamil Nadu,India.
Idaikkadar was one of the 18 siddhas, who have been respectively worshiped by the people of Tamil Nadu, as mostly, all the siddhas, had their nativity, at Tamil Nadu. What we are going to see the place, here in this movie clip, had been, once upon the living place of that great siddha, Idaikkadar.
This place Idaikattur, is situated in between the national highways of Madurai to Rameshwaram, which took diversion, before Manamadurai, approximately 2 km from the national highways, on the bank of the river Vaigai. Idaikkadar, who had been mastered at astrology, once upon, adjudged that a severe famine would have come soon, on his living days.
After having known this forthcoming famine, he trained his cattle to feed yercum leaves, instead the lush green plants. He also prepared himself, by having applied the paste of the 'Varaghu grains' on the sand walls, of his hut. This phenomena made other people to mock at him, that, why he was doing like that. That day of famine entered his living zone, and all the people, and their cattle met their sad demise, except him and his cattle.
How could it possible? The answer is here. Yercum leaves have been, not the seasonal plants, which could grow anywhere, at any condition, without the water resources. So his cattle could however manage that worst famine. Then, somebody could think, o.k.? his cattle were safe, but, what about his survival?
For that also, we could find the solution, here itself. Due to the in taking of yercum leaves always , the cattle, had scrubbed the walls, of his hut, due to their itching sensation over the skin of the cattle. By having done the scrubbing on the walls, the varaghu grains had withered from the walls, as, it had been once pasted by Idaikkadar, at the time, before the famine could struck his living place. From that withered Varaghu grains, he could also survive, even in that worst famine.
The Navagrahas, that are the nine planets, who were the sole responsible for the adverse effects of that famine, astonished that how could it be possible for Idaikkadar, and his cattle for their survival. They wanted to know the secret, and they reached his hut. Idaikkadar, by having seen the arrival of the 9 planets, became very happy, and received them with warm welcome.
Idaikkadar had greeted the Navagrahas, with what he had, simply with goat milk and Varaghu rice. The different taste, and the yercum effect in the goat milk, made the navagrahas fell asleep. While having seen the navagrahas in asleep, a sudden spark had induced idaikkadar's mind, that, due to the current position of the navagrahas only, there had been severe famine, and suppose, if he could interchange their current status, with what the apt status for the heavy downpour, and good monsoon, definitely, it could solve the problem. Idaikkadar also got into action, and changed the sleeping positions of the navagrahas into a favorable position of heavy downpour.
