Idamalayar Dam is a multipurpose concrete gravity dam located at Ennakal, near Bhoothathankettu, on the Idamalayar River, a tributary of the Periyar River in Kerala, South India. Completed in 1985, with a length of 373 metres, the dam created a multipurpose reservoir covering 28.3 km2 in the scenic hills of the Western Ghats. The Idamalayar Dam is situated on the Western Ghats and is located amidst forest area. You will see that the dam is on all sides covered by tall trees. You can drive to reach the Idamalayar Dam as the beauty of the road is famed far and near. The roadway is enveloped in a canopy of trees and looking like it has come out of a children’s fairytale book. You will notice many birds and animals like monkeys, deer and elephants during your drive. If you are a photography enthusiast then this journey will prove very enjoyable to you. The beautiful curve of the roads aligned on each side by bushes that seem to stand up as if forming a wall to the road makes this a memorable ride. The Idamalayar Dam is located on the Idamalayar River, a tributary of the Periyar River in Kerala. Edamalayar originates in the Anamala Hills at elevation of 2,520 metres. The river is a perennial source draining a catchment area of 381 km2 with a topography of high relief. It is a forested region near Boothathankeetu at Ennakal which is situated at distance of seventy kilometres from Kochi. People from off places come here to enjoy the beauty of the nature. Trekking, Boating and Bird watching are various activities that can be done by the visitors. The forests near the reservoir have many wild elephants, so you need to careful before heading for the forest. There are lots of varieties of birds that could be seen propping near the trees. It can be visited anytime of the year but try to avoid extreme summer and monsoon season as the humidity is the forest area remains high in that time. The best time is late monsoon and at winter season which starts from the month of October and ends till March.

Milky water flows out of Idamalayar dam in Kerala as all four shutters were opened. It has been opened by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) at 5am on Thursday morning. Heavy rains lashing the Ernakulam district forced authorities to advance the opening of the Idamalayar dam. Dam gates had to be opened as the reservoir hit full capacity at 169 metres. Around 700 cubic metres per second (cumecs) of water is being released. Kerala State Disaster Management Authorities have issued warnings to those living on the banks of the Periyar.

Idamalayar Dam Opened: People On The River Banks Alerted | Mathrubhumi News
Kochi: The shutters of Idamalayar dam was opened as the water level reached maximum storage capacity. Four shutters of the dam were opened at 5 am on Thursday. People dwelling in the area have been alerted and informed that the water level in Periyar river will increase by 1.5 metre. 164 cubic metre water will be released. Four shutters of the dam were opened by 80 cm. It is expected that water from the dam will reach Aluva within 4-5 hours. Before this, Idamalayar dam was opened in 2013. Earlier, it had been decided that the dam would be opened at 6 am. However, the heavy rain in the area caused the water level rise to 169.95 metre and the authorities decided to open the shutters at 5 am.
