Idumban Hillock * Palani ~
Idumban Hillock - Colloquially called as 'Idumban Malai'.
Who is Idumban ?
Idumban had been the disciple (demon) of the great sage Agasthiyar. Once upon, Agasthiyar had been directed by lord Shiva to balance the world, when
it had been raised up in the north, due to the holy wedding of lord Shiva with goddess sri Parvathi Devi at Kailash. Having accepted the lord's order, Agasthiar as a single person had gone to south and balanced the world as usual.
Once upon, the sage Agasthiyar ordered his disciple Idumban to bring the two
hillocks, namely Shivagiri and Sakthigiri from Mount Kailash, which is said to be the abode of lord Shiva, to his hermitage situated in southern part of Tamil Nadu.
How Idumban did this ?
Having obliged the order of the great sage Agasthiyar, his disiciple Idumban tied the two hillocks namely Shivagiri and Sakthigiri at the two ends of a huge 'Thandam', like two pendulams and carried them towards the hermitage of sage Agasthiyar.
On the way to the hermitage of the sage Agasthiyar, he had to attend his morning duties. So he brought down the two hillocks on the ground, very near to a huge pond, from his shoulder. After having done his morning duties, he came near the hillocks, where he laid down. There he saw one small boy, stood on one of the hillocks ... Who is He?
The boy who had stood on the hillock, was none other than lord Muruga. He had been there, because of the rejection of the 'fruit of wisdom' (a mango fruit) to Him, even though He had won the contest that whoever went around the universe at first, would have been granted the mango fruit.
Lord Vinayagar had won the contest by just circumambulated Shiva and Parvathi, having told them that they had been the universe. They also granted Him the 'fruit of wisdom', even though Muruga circumambulated the universe. This annoyed Muruga and He flew to Palani on His transcendental carrier, the peacock.
These two incidents coincided with one another, that was 'Muruga-came-there' and 'Idumban-fetched-the-two-hillocks' there. Idumban, on having seen Muruga stood on the hillock, asked to get down. But Muruga refused to do so. There had been a battle between them and atlast, Idumban had been killed, but being got the divine status that people who came here (Palani), first should worship Idumban and then only could reach Muruga, up in the hill.
In the hillock of Palani also, where lord Bala Thandayuthapani (Muruga) resides, we have to come across the shrine of Idumban, half way to the hill top. All the devotees should worship him first and then only, we have to worship lord Muruga at the hill top. It's firmly believed that he is the messenger, through which all our wishes would have come into reality.
Hope ! Let us putforth our real demands at the foot of Idumbar so that he recommend our real demands to lord Muruga. In turn Lord Bala Thandayuthapani would take care of us ! Om Saravana Bava !

VIEW FROM IDUMABAN TEMPLE,PALANI
Sage Agastya wanted to take two hills - Sivagiri and Sakthigiri - to his abode in the South and commissioned his disciple Idumban to carry them. Idumban bore the hills slung across his shoulders, in the form of a kavadi one on either side. When he was fatigued, he placed the kavadi near Palani to take rest.At this stage, Subrahmanya or Muruga had been outwitted in a contest for going round the world. Ganapati had won the prized fruit (pomegranate or mango) by simply going round His parents. Long after, this, Subrahmanya came sweating on His peacock to find that the prize had already been given away. In anger, the frustrated child left the divine parents and came down to TiruAvinankudi at the Adivaram (pronounced Adivaram. It means foot of the Sivagiri Hill). Siva pacified Him by saying that He (Subrahmanya) Himself was the fruit (pazham) of all wisdom and knowledge; nee - you. Hence the place was called 'Pazham Nee' or Palani. Later, He withdrew to the hill and settled there as a recluse in peace and solitude. By seeing Idumba, God Muruga decided to test his devotion towards his master Agastya and his determination. When Idumban resumed his journey, he could not lift the hill. Muruga had made it impossible for Idumban to make it. In the fierce battle that ensued, Idumban was killed but was later on restored to life. Idumban prayed that:
1. Whosoever carried on his shoulders the Kavadi, signifying the two hills and visited the temple on a vow, should be blessed and;
2. He should be given the privilege of standing sentinel at the entrance to the hill.
