This overcrowded market at Bara Bazaar in Shillong has hardly any room for another person. This is the largest market in Meghalaya and one of the most authentic local markets in the North-East.
The name ‘Bara Bazaar’ can be simply translated as ‘big bazaar’. The locals called it Iewduh Market.
All kinds of vegetables and spices are brought from all parts of Meghalaya to be sold here. If you reach there early enough, you’ll end up seeing many local farmers shipping in their products. This place is always buzzing with life.

Meghalaya STREET FOOD Breakfast TOUR in Iewduh Market - Non Veg INDIAN Street Food | Shillong, India
In March of 2019, I spent two weeks in northeast India to explore the states of Assam and Meghalaya. The look and feel of northeast India is unlike the other parts of the country I visited in 2018. I couldn’t wait to take a deep dive into the region’s food, culture, and history. Come along with me and let’s explore northeast India together!

After arriving in Shillong (the capital of Meghalaya) that morning, I met up with my friend Paul, a local who is also a part of the Khasi tribe of northeast India. He took me to Bara Bazaar in Iewduh Market, where we had an authentic Khasi breakfast. I was so hungry and couldn’t wait to eat!
Almost immediately after arriving at the market, we came across a woman selling a fried, doughy Khasi dish and tea. The tea was minty and reminded me of tea I’d had in Morocco. The dish reminded me of an elephant ear that you can get at fairs across America. It contained jaggery and was a great way to start the morning.
We also saw vendors selling loofahs. There are lots of food stalls in the market, which is divided into smaller markets that specialize in vegetables, meats, fish, and more. This is the oldest market in northeast India, and you can certainly feel it! The people moving around me looked more had a lot of southeast Asian features because they’re descended from the Ahoms, who came from what is now Thailand.
There were also people carrying the carcasses of slaughtered cows and pigs on their shoulders! It was an incredible sight to see!
We made our way through the market, taking in all the sights and smells as we went. We picked up a few foods and then moved on to the dry fish market. There were 20 different varieties of dried fish there, including the kind that’s used to make fish chutney. I could smell the salt in the air!
Our first stop for breakfast was Nat Khasi Restaurant, which is next to the fruit market. There are no tables, so you just sit down and eat. I ordered pork liver, pork intestines, rice mixed with pork, regular pork, and pork with onion and ginger.
The rice was very flavorful and reminded me of a non-veg biryani. The pork was absolutely delicious and not spicy at all. I also had a Russian salad with pork, which was also so good! Then I went with the liver, which was tasty and chewy. The pork intestine sausage was also wonderful. Some of the pork had bones in it, so I had to be careful. Then Paul had me try a hot chili and a fermented soybean chutney.
Then we visited the kitchen to see the food being made. There were large pots everywhere!
Then I tried a traditional fruit called sohshang, which can be sweet or sour and is rich in vitamin C. It had the consistency of a tomato and had a big seed in the center but was sour. I liked it, though!
Next, we headed to the beef market. It was very traditional and rustic and felt like I had taken a trip back in time. There was beef as far as the eye could see: pieces laid out on tables and even more cow parts like tongue and other cuts of meat hanging from the booths. I watched a guy butcher a carcass right in front of me. It was a real spectacle!
It was similar in the pork market. This is so unique to this part of India. It’s one of the rawest experiences I’ve ever had in my travels! Then we headed to the fish market, where they sold lots of local fish. Everything there is incredibly fresh.
Then we went to the chicken and duck market. There were so many chickens everywhere and there were even pigeons! I then learned that Iewduh Market is run by a king and every vendor pays taxes to him.
From there, we headed to a tiny café to eat the snacks we bought earlier. We got some red tea there, and then dug into a rice cake. It had coconut on it and was very dry. Then was another rice cake with jaggery. It was great with the minty tea! There was also a dense snack made of super sticky rice. It was a little too sticky for me!
I hope you enjoyed my breakfast street food tour of Iewduh Market! What an incredible experience this was. If you liked it, please give the video a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also please subscribe to my channel!

Ïewduh is based on the market by the same name, one of the liveliest markets of North East India. Probably everybody knows what a market looks like. They know how the lanes, the shops, the shopkeeper’s look like. But beyond the surface, these everyday people, the common faces, the un-heroic stories also have their special moments. In every lane, there are new stories.
In Ïewduh people from different communities and religion work and they co-exist. And today centuries later, Ïewduh stands tall and witness to a lot of history. With scars and colors and freshness and stench, this is the real world of Ïewduh, where fairy tales do happen.
Ïewduh the film is about everyday people, with everyday stories, not dignified as heroes, but people who make the lives of each other better. In every lane of Ïewduh is an untold story. The struggle, the hope to give life not just to themselves, but also to those that they love, those that they care for. In Ïewduh when reason ends, relationships begin.

Brief Introduction
Iewduh or Bara Bazar is probably the oldest and the largest wholesale market in Shillong and also the largest open market in Asia. Here , one quite literally buy anything, if they look hard enough.
Through the labyrinth-like, dark lanes of the bustling hub, one can merrily walk through without leaving a trail.
That’s the fun in Bara Bazar—it is possible to lose yourself. (And a little frightening too.)
Visiting with this animated market every time is a new experience. On comparing compare it with the wholesale bazars of other cities this one stands out. Perhaps because it appears to be more organised and the lanes are leaner.
This is not a tourist haven. The open drains, the aggressive crowds and the low-lit path, do not make for an ideal experience
Objective
.Iewduh , is usually overlooked as just a whole sale market by the localities of Shilllong; but the place has much more to offer. One can find local herbal medicines, tailoring services, and many other goods if they explore the place nicely. This documentary will expose those unexplored areas of Iewduh with helps of photographs and also highlight the various crisis and conflicts faced by the commuters of Iewduh.
Crisis
Iewduh, being one of the largest commercial hub and source of revenue to the state, isn’t well explored and developed. It is overlooked by the local people and the government. Hence, the documentary will be an attempt to find out what the place is lacking behind and what can be done to make it a better market area.

Cow's feet and other organs for sale in Iewduh, Shillong
Beef meat sells in large quantities in Shillong's Bara Bazaar. Despite its image for venerating the cow as a sacred beast and regarding the eating of beef as taboo, tens of millions of people in India do indeed eat beef on a regular basis.

Bus stand in 1990's Shillong, Meghalaya
Migrant labour pass their tin canisters and baggage into a bus through the window, in Shillong circa 1991. A Kit Kat advertisement dominates the old bus stand near the office of the Managing Director of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation.
A kali-peeli black and yellow Hindustan Ambassador stands by on duty to pick up passengers and an Indian Army truck passes by. Maruti 800 cars dominate as do Tata buses.
People crowd around a Shillong to Guwahati bus ticket counter where the man on duty operates an old black and white CRT computer monitor.
