A Band Of Gypsies @ Ighten Leigh Social Club, Burnley
A.B.O.G are a classic rock band and in their first set, which is the only one I caught, there was a fantastic moody mix of Hendrix and Floyd. With a deep bass sound and stunning guitar mix, these guys are a must see band. The singer has a good deep soul voice that works well. They are actually based in Oldham, but they are well known and well liked locally and have a good following. Full set includes Hendrix, Sabbath, Rory Gallagher, Ozzy, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd and many more. Note to self :- must catch the full set next time.

Northern Social @ Ighten Leigh Social Club
Northern Social are a Indie/rock covers band based around Clitheroe, Whalley and Burnley and if you like The Seahorses, Foo Fighters, The Charlatans, Thin Lizzy, The Beatles, Stereophonics, Oasis, Blur and more - they are the band for you.
They formed earlier this year, most of them originating from the band Roller Music.
They started the first spot with two great numbers; Oasis - I'm a Rock n Roll Star followed up with the Ocean Colour Scene number - The Riverboat Song, and they performed them brilliantly. This band get you hooked in at the very beginning and keep you there. They have a professionalism about them, they are tight and the sound is great. They certainly had the crowd up and dancing here.
Bruce's voice is just right for this genre and this band.

Ighten Leigh Social Club (CAMRA club of the year 2014) is buzzing on this Friday night and the punters are happy and friendly. There are plenty of standing and sitting areas around the club and it is packed with young and old alike and they are loving it. It's smart, tidy and well run. It's 50p entrance for non members who are made welcome, and the drinks are quite cheap - £2.60 for a pint of Carling. It's one I will definitely be returning to.

The Flaming Hearts are a Sabden/Burnley based band that have only been together now for a few months, but have performed in quite a few local venues. They deliver a great mix of originals and covers that can't fail to get you in the mood. Their goal is to deliver music that can lift the soul coupled with heartfelt and meaningful lyrics which tell personal stories, and I think it works well.
Mark has a great voice with good support from the rest of the band. I particularly liked their own numbers which sound fresh and appealing, and the covers are not your usual run of the mill stuff. They even passed the good wife test, yes she liked them, even their own numbers (and that's saying something).
They are trying to build up a library of their own work and are soon to return to the studio. Check out the 3 numbers that they have already produced - (reverbnation link below)
I feel this band are only going to get better and better, they put in a lot of time and effort and are committed to getting it right. They are their own worst critic as I found out on the night, but I don't think they realise how good they are and I'm sure we are going to see more of them in the future. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't seen them yet. Check out the video and lets have your views. Cheers Phil.

Facemelters @ Ighten Leigh SC Burnley
Yes the Facemelters are back at their spiritual home where they have been gigging for the last 12 years on a regular basis, and it's a tough one today following Burnley FC's loss to Southampton this afternoon. But these guys are seasoned entertainers and soon have the punters bouncing on the floor, in fact one guy has taken to acrobatics.
Some well known faces in the band with Joe from the recently formed Band With No Name (don't mention Yorkshire puddings) and Splinter, Gav and Iain Parky who are also with Splinter, and Iain Hodgen one of the most prolific guitarists around, who also gigs with Hot Dog Hobos and BON - AC/DC tribute band. Ian (Chaddy) on vocals knows how to create a good feel and gets everyone singing and clapping along and there's a good atmosphere here at the Ighten Leigh this evening.
They play a good selection of rock/pop covers and with guys of this pedigree you get as expected a good tight sound with lots of enthusiasm to boot. Always worth checking out.

Northern Social @ The Sun Inn Burnley
When I caught Northern Social about 6 months ago at the Ighten Leigh, they hadn't been around long and not many people had seen them locally. I thought they were really good, and I wasn't surprised when friends who have seen them since were of the same opinion.
They are an indie/rock covers band, playing a selection of songs from the likes of The Seahorses, Ocean Colour Scene, Foo Fighters, The Charlatans, Thin Lizzy, The Beatles, Stereophonics, Oasis, Blur and many more, it's a good mix with a few surprises thrown in.
Lots of stuff from the 90s, which looking at these guys was the music they were brought up with, but it's well dispersed with earlier numbers from the likes of ELO and the Beatles. Some of the numbers I'm not that au fait with, but these guys play it well which can be appreciated.
They are musically spot on, with a great sound, although I was a bit too near the speakers to get good clarity on the video. It's always going to be a challenge to get good footage in a small pub with an excited crowd.

Express Story - Working at the Burnley Express (1974)
Express Story
This film, made in 1974 by John Rickard, looks at everyday life at the Burnley Express local newspaper and how the paper was produced before computers arrived in the 1980s. It is a fine example of John’s work, his story-telling, camera work and editing skills, that captures the everyday roles of the staff and the physical nature of their jobs in the mid-1970s.
Runtime: 15 min 11 s
John Rickard
John was a self-taught film maker who was born in Wigan in 1939 before his family moved to Burnley when he was eleven years old. After completing his National Service, John became a printer in Burnley. John’s interest in film making began in the 1950s when he began working with an 8mm cine film camera and later 16mm before graduating to video in the late 1990s.
John produced a number of films from the late 1950s onwards, about Burnley and the surrounding area that were in colour with sound and narration. John became a member of Burnley Cine Club in 1959 and continued making films until he died aged 79 in February 2018. Thank you John.

Rugby League Cup - 1960
80,000 came South to Wembley for the Rugby League Final between Hull and Wakefield Trinity. Her Majesty had come to see the event for the first time, and the teams were presented to Prince Philip before the match. With a victory of thirty-eight to five, Derek Turner received the trophy from the Queen. Wakefield well deserved to be called wonderful, and there'd never been quite so overwhelming a win as this in the history of the contest.
