Ightham Mote Medieval Moated Manor House & Gardens.
Ightham Mote (pronounced item moat) is a medieval moated manor house close to the village of Ightham, near Sevenoaks in Kent.
Ightham Mote and its gardens are owned by the National Trust and open to the public. The house is a Grade I listed building, and parts of it are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Originally dating to around 1320, the building's importance lies in the fact that successive owners effected relatively few changes to the main structure, after the completion of the quadrangle with a new chapel in the 16th century. Nikolaus Pevsner called it the most complete small medieval manor house in the country, and it remains an example that shows how such houses would have looked in the Middle Ages. Unlike most courtyard houses of its type, which have had a range demolished, so that the house looks outward.

EXPLORING A MEDIEVAL MOATED MANOR HOUSE | IGHTHAM MOTE KENT
Myself and Candice recently joined the National Trust and this was our first NT property we had visited since joining, saving us £32 on entry fees and parking! I have stopped at Ightham Mote before to look at the outside once whilst I was on a day walk a while back and always wanted to have a look round it. Now the opportunity presented itself ...

Time Team Special 16 (2004) - The Ten Million Pound House (Ightham, Kent)
Tony Robinson and Time Team travel to Ightham in Kent to visit the most complete moated manor house in the UK. Conservation work on Ightham Mote began by the National Trust in 1989 that involved dismantling much of the building and recording its construction methods before faithfully repairing, restoring, and rebuilding it. The project ended in early 2004 after revealing numerous examples of structural and ornamental features which had been covered up or altered by later modifications. It is estimated to have cost in excess of £10 million.

Ightham Mote, Kent, UK
Ightham Mote is a magnificent very early fortified manor house build only a few years after Bodiam Castle which can also be seen in my series of films.
The manor house is built around a moat and boasts very attractive gardens.
It survived destruction during the Civil War because the parliamentarian troops could not find it and this is not a surprise because it is no so easy for today's motorist to find either.
The family who owned it could not afford the upkeep and donated it to the National Trust.
I have a wide range of interests and I think that this is reflected in the films which can be seen here.

Unlike most courtyard houses of its type, which have had a range demolished, so that the house looks outward, Nicholas Cooper observes that Ightham wholly surrounds its courtyard and looks inward, into it. There are over seventy rooms in the house, all arranged around a central courtyard. The house is surrounded on all sides by a square moat, crossed by three bridges. The earliest surviving evidence is for a house of the early 14th century, with the Great Hall, to which were attached, at the high, or dais end, the Chapel, Crypt and two Solars. The courtyard was completely enclosed by increments on its restricted moated site and the battlemented tower constructed in the 15th century. Very little of the 14th century survives on the exterior behind rebuilding and refacing of the 15th and 16th centuriesThe structures include unusual and distinctive elements, such as the porter's squint, a narrow slit in the wall designed to enable a gatekeeper to examine a visitor's credentials before opening the gate. An open loccia with a fifteenth-century gallery above, connects the main accommodations with the gatehouse range. A large kennel was built in the late 19th century for a St. Bernard named Dido is the only Grade I listed dog house.

Winter's day at Ightham Mote, Kent, England
I have decided to introduce some new videos to the channel, showing places of local history and nature from where I live in Kent, England. I feel nature provides great emotional healing and restoration, so I hope you enjoy visiting these places as much as my family and me do.
Here is a short little video, showing Ightham Mote in Kent. It's a moated manor house that was built in the 14th Century. The building and grounds are in the care of the National Trust, an amazing organisation that aims to preserve historic buildings and areas of outstanding beauty and interest. It is an organisation that relies on volunteers, who offer their time to maintain and make available these properties to the public. Whenever I visit one of the National Trust houses, I am always struck by the loving care and attention that is given to enable future generations to enjoy and learn from.
Unfortunately, Ightham Mote house itself is closed at the moment, but I will return when it's open again, to film some of the interior of this beautiful house.
We have named the little Robin, Ethel, as we think she is a girl-robin. I have seen her again since this visit to Ightham with a little male robin, but didn't manage to film them; will try to find and film her and her friend again!
Relax and enjoy xx
