しまなみ海道 Shimanami Kaido From Imabari to Onomichi
The Nishiseto Expressway, commonly known as the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido Expressway, links Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, with Imabari, Ehime Prefecture. It's a 60 kilometer-long highway exclusively for automobiles that links the islands of the Seto Inland Sea with nine individual bridges.
Each bridge consists of a road way and a pedestrian walkway. That enables people to enjoy the sea breeze as they walk or cycle across the bridge.
The area along the Shimanami Kaido linked by bridges is blessed by the temperate climate of the Seto Inland Sea. There is much to delight visitors, including the loveliness of nature on the islands, sites of history and culture, and a variety of activities.

However, to be fair, Shimanami Kaido Bridge’s Honshu location is in Onomichi City with its Shikoku partner in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. This 60 kilometer bridge which spans over Seto Inland Sea also connects Honshu (Japan’s main island) with the island of Shikoku. In addition, bridge has ramps along the route for visitors to stop at one of the six islands (Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima, and Oshima) in the Seto Inland Sea. Japan Trip: Scenes of the Seto Inland Sea and Salt Air on the Ferry along Shimanaami Kaido, Onomichi, Hiroshima 10 Moochan
Shimanami Kaido Bridge, the world’s longest series of suspension bridges, connects Honshu (Japan’s main island) with Shikoku. Visitors can enter or exit the bridge from either Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture on the Honshu side or from Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture on the Shikoku side. This 60 kilometer long bridge-toll road can be utilized by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Ferry service is also frequent along the Shimanami Kaido Bridge. Passengers can visit the islands via ferry which stops at the various Seto Inland Sea islands with the Shimanami Kaido Bridge in the background. There are 14 lines so visitors will have many options. Many, though not all, allow their passengers to carry bicycles on board. This may be because the 70 kilometer bicycle path (one way) the bridge provides may be tiring roundtrip. As there are ferries which stop at the islands, cyclists who decide not to continue the cycle journey can use the ferry, instead, to continue their Shimanami Kaido journey.
Though there are 14 lines, the following two may be helpful to foreign tourists.
** Onomichi Ekimae Port - Shige Higashi Port - Sawa Port - Setoda Port:
The one-way journey will take about 40 minutes with a cost of 820 yen. Passengers who wish to bring their bicycles on board will need to pay an additional 160 yen. There are 9 boats per day.
Visitors will find the Hirayama Museum and Kosanji Temple located near both Setoda Port and Sawa Port. And there are cycling terminals located near all four of the ports. However, only four of the nine boats per day stop at Sawa Port.
**Imabari Port - Tomoura Port - Kinoura Port - Habu Port:
The one-way journey takes 75 minutes with a cost of 1750 yen. There are 8 boats per day.
There is a cycling terminal located near Habu Port. This line is served by a high speed ferry. However, please note, there are a few boats on this line which do not allow bicycles on board.
Whether by ferry, bicycle, bus or car, Shimanami Kaido Bridge has a lot to offer its visitors. Whether it be going on the Tide Ride (a boat ride on the one of the fastest streams) on Oshima Island, visiting the Very Important Cultural Property of the Home of the Yoshihara Family on Mukaishima Island or just lying down to watch the sunset on Sunset Beach in Setoda (on Ikuchijima Island), visitors will enjoy the variety of attractions available along the Shimanami Kaido Bridge.

Japan Trip: World's Longest Series of Suspension Bridges, Shimanami Kaido Bridge, Hiroshima 06 Moochan
Japan and its people are very proud of Shimanami Kaido Bridge, the world’s longest series of suspension bridges, which connects Honshu (Japan’s main island) with Shikoku.
Visitors can use Shimanami Kaido to visit Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima, and Oshima islands as the bridge has exits for its users to stop along the Seto Inland Islands on their way to Honshu or Shikoku. Some areas of attractions on the islands include:
**Innoshima Suigun Castle on Innoshima Island. Though not the original castle, the recreated naval castle is modeled after the original castle from the 14th to 15th centuries. Visitors will find a museum about the Japanese navy within the castle.
**Kosanji Temple on Ikuchijima Island. Dedicated to the founder’s mother, the buildings within the temple grounds are modeled after famous Japanese historic structures. This temple has a museum as well displaying rare, high quality antique art pieces.
**Oyamazumi Jinja (Shrine) on Omishima Island. The deity enshrined at this shrine is the protector of the sailors and soldiers. The shrine is also famous for its collection of historic armor and swords.
**Kirosan Observatory Park on Oshima Island. Visitors can view Kurushima-kaiyo Strait Bridge, the first three consecutive suspension bridges in the world! In addition, Kurshima-kaiyo Strait, one of the three fastest currents in Japan can be seen here.
In addition to the tourist attractions, visitors can enjoy the fresh sea air, cool sea breeze as well as sunshine on this island hopping bridge. Visitors will find beautiful beaches on the islands. There are campgrounds as well as hot spring inns (ryokan) for those who wish to spend the night.

The seafood, caught from the surrounding Seto Inland Sea, is delicious as well. Sea bream. Octopus, Shellfish (including short-neck clams and freshwater clams) are but a few of the popular seafood in this area.
