A Walk Around Île Saint-Louis, Paris
The Île Saint-Louis is one of two natural islands in the Seine river, in Paris, France (the other natural island is Île de la Cité; the Île aux Cygnes is artificial).
The Île Saint-Louis is connected to the rest of Paris by four bridges to both banks of the river and to the Île de la Cité by the Pont Saint-Louis. This island was formerly used for the grazing of market cattle and stocking wood.
The island is located within the 4th arrondissement of Paris and has a population of 4,453.
One of France's first examples of urban planning, it was mapped and built from end to end during the 17th-century reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII. A peaceful oasis of calm in the busy Paris centre, this island has only narrow one-way streets, the métro station of Sully-Morland, and two bus stops. Most of the island is residential, but there are several restaurants, hotels, shops, cafés and ice cream parlours at street level, as well as one large church. Artists and intellectuals abound within its perimeters.
The Île Saint-Louis, an elegant neighborhood, was actually two natural islets in the Seine River – the Île Notre Dame (which was the larger of the two) and the Île aux Vaches (a small islet used as a cow pasture) – joined together in 1614. The Île Saint-Louis is named after Louis IX (Saint Louis), King of France from 8 November 1226 to 25 August 1270.
At the start of the 16th century, the island was not yet named after King Louis IX, who was canonized in 1297, less than 30 years after his death.[1]
It was King Louis XIII, who reigned from 1610 (age 8) to 1643, along with the queen mother Marie de Médicis, who decided at the start of the 17th century to implement a great urban plan first devised by his father, King Henri IV, which transformed the two Îles.

Paris, France - Video Tour of the Ile-Saint-Louis
New York Habitat introduces you to another charming area of Paris, the ''Ile-Saint-Louis''. In this video tour you will discover the Ile-Saint-Louis, the lovely island on the Seine River right behind Notre-Dame Cathedral.
Feel free to discover other video tours of Paris from New York Habitat, such as the video tour of the Champs Elysees in Paris part 1 & part 2 .
This video features :
The Classic Townhouses on Ile-Saint-Louis
Dating back to the seventeenth century, the island's buildings are for the most part townhouses built for members of the rich middle class, many of them officials who worked for Louis XIV. Since those times, the island has had many illustrious residents such as the poet Baudelaire, physicist Marie Curie and Voltaire. In the 1920s it was a favorite haunt of Hemingway.
Definition of Hôtel
Many historic buildings in France have the word Hôtel in their names. This does not mean they are actually hotels; in French hotel often refers to a prestigious single family residence or mansion.
The Hôtel Lauzun (17 quai d'Anjou)
The Hôtel Lauzun is just such a mansion. One of the most beautiful in all of Paris, the mansion is famous for two things: its exquisite baroque interior and its later residents. You can take a guided tour of the mansion every Tuesday. Baudelaire lived here while writing some of the poems of his famous Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du mal).
3 quai d'Anjou
The house at 3 quai d'anjou was designed by and the personal residence of Louis Le Vau.
The Hôtel Lambert (1 quai d'Anjou)
Another of Paris' finest mansions is the Hôtel Lambert. In the nineteenth century, the Polish government bought the mansion and welcomed Polish exiles such as the musician Chopin and the poet Adam Mickiewicz, together with their French friends. This mansion had a large garden, which was unusual for a mansion on the island, as there was so little space.
24-26 quai de Bethune - Pompidou Residence
The building at 24-26 quai de Bethune was built on the site of a beautiful mansion also designed by Louis Le Vau. All that is left of the old mansion are the door panels, but they are considered the loveliest doors on the island. This is where the late president of France, Georges Pompidou, lived.
The Polish Library and Adam Mickiewicz Museum (6 quai d'Orléans)
The Polish Library Building also houses three museums in one, the first devoted to the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, the second to Chopin, and the third to artist Boleslas Biegas. It can be visited on Thursdays.

You may want to sample the ice cream for which Ile-Saint-Louis is famous. The Parisians deem it to be the best in Paris. A favorite is Berthillon ice cream which has its headquarters on rue Saint-Louis-en-Ile.
L'Eglise Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile
The Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile church, designed once again by Le Vau was dedicated to King Louis IX, who after his death was made a saint. The front, hemmed in by buildings, hides a white interior, highly decorated with gilt, and filled with works of art and other treasures. It is a splendid setting for the many concerts given here throughout the year.

PARIS: Twilight on the Ile Saint-Louis
A twilight walk around the Ile Saint-Louis to look at the sights. These include the Hotel de Ville and Tour Saint-Jacques in the Marais as well as shops and restaurants on the Ile Saint-Louis.
Ile Saint-Louis in Paris France
The Ile Saint-Louis in The Marais neighborhood in Paris, France.
The Marais literally means 'marsh' and that is exactly what this Parisian neighborhood was 1,000 years ago, writes Abby Gordon, an American expat and freelance writer based in Paris.
Before the area was drained into a fertile marshland, it was a swamp, and unfortunately the swamp-like odors remained centuries after the transformation. Narrow cobblestoned streets, exposed stone and beamed-buildings and slanted walls and rooflines are prevalent, a testament to the Marais's medieval history.
Today, the Marais is one of Paris's most trendy and desirable neighborhoods. It is the hub of the gay community in Paris. The Marais is also home to so many restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, many of which stay open on Sundays, an unusual phenomenon in France. Despite this modernization, the Marais still retains so much of the medieval character that was bulldozed in the 19th and 20th centuries for bigger and better structures in other parts of the City of Light—but not the medieval smell. Thankfully, the most prevalent smell these days emanates from the numerous seductive boulangeries (bakeries) and pâtisseries (pastry shops).
