Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure
Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure
Cape Verde is a country in West Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.
Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left.
Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September. Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.
Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are :
Santo Antão
Great hiking.
São Vicente
With the cultural capital of Mindelo.
Santa Luzia
Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.
São Nicolau
Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.
Sal
Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.
Boa Vista
Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving
Maio
Even more nice beaches.
Santiago Island
The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.
Fogo
A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.
Brava
A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.
There are plenty of hotels and guest houses throughout the archipelago. Though the largest hotels are based on the islands of Sal (Riu Funana and Garopa hotels--1000 rooms combined), and Boa Vista (Riu Touareg--881 rooms). Cape Verde has fantastic fresh seafood. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.
There are ferry services between the islands. Depending on the distance between the islands you are going from and to, flying can be significantly shorter but also significantly more expensive.

10 very cool reasons to add Montreal to your travel list - Travel Guide vs Booking
At the water’s edge, I’m clutching a golden grenade. At least, that’s what it looks like — but break it open and you’re rewarded with a medley of sweet, tangy flavours. This is the fruit from a freshly plucked cacao pod on a pristine beach on Principe, the smallest of the islands off the west coast of Africa that make up the twin-island nation of São Tomé and Principe. It’s Africa’s second-smallest country, with a population of fewer than 200,000. In the early 20th century, most of the world’s chocolate came from here.I’m with my husband, Mark, and two children, aged six and three, staying at Roça Sundy, a small hotel that opened this year inside a recently restored roça (plantation) close to Yola beach. These roças are where cacao was grown and harvested when this was a Portuguese colony.Since independence in 1975, most of them now lie abandoned, with nature creating ruins where I half-expect Indiana Jones to come running through.Along, cobbled road leads to the grand, mountaintop house of Roça Sundy. Homemade cacao cream on buttered toast is served for breakfast on the terrace.Along way to go with children? Well, yes, but relatively easy to reach by a 12-hour flight from London, changing at Lisbon.São Tomé is peaceful, but nothing prepares us for how quiet Principe is. Before the Portuguese discovered these islands in 1470, they were uninhabited.Slaves were then brought over from mainland Africa. After many were later freed, the Portuguese bought in cheap contract labour from Angola and Cape Verde.Descendants of these workers still live in the senzalas, the rows of stone houses set back from the main house. Our boys play football with the children on the grass in front, dodging chickens as they chase after the ball.Roça Sundy is owned by the South African tech billionaire and astronaut Mark Shuttleworth, and his chef used to work at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck, in Bray, Berkshire. The nearby beach hotel Bom Bom, where we spend our second week, is also his, with a 300m walkway across turquoise sea to its island restaurant. In December, he opens Praia Sundy, Principe’s first five-star resort. We go on boat trips, feeling like the first explorers as phonolitic rock towers shoot up from a Jurassic jungle, humpback whales breach and we snorkel among Guinean parrotfish. Each day, we find another empty beach where we swim and our sons use coconut shells as buckets.Part of the island was declared a Unesco biosphere reserve in 2012. One day, I head off early with our guide, Yodi, to scale the Pico de Principe mountain.Clambering up root staircases, Yodi points out a Principe sunbird. ‘These islands have the world’s largest concentration of endemic birds,’ he whispers. Our last day is spent on São Tomé, home to Italian Claudio Corallo, who moved here to make chocolate, producing the island’s only bean-to-bar chocolate. In his factory in the island’s tiny capital, women are rolling candied ginger before coating it in chocolate: it’s some of the most distinctive I’ve ever tasted.‘I’ve spent years learning how to make naturally bitter cacao taste sweet, without masking it with sugar,’ he says.I could be looking at Mr Wonka. This chocolate is like these islands: full of different flavours, unspoilt and a truly rare find.

Ponta Preta Super Sunday at Cabo Verde kitesurfing
It happens once every 7 year at Ponta Preta, waves as big as houses. We were lucky to be there to capture Elvis Jose Almeida Nunes with the new Swell v2 on Super Sunday.
After kitesurfing the big waves for a couple of hours, Elvis was unlucky, got thrown off his board by the foam crashed his kite and spent almost 2 minutes under. His friend Airton rescued him and he got back out there!
