AUSTRALIA! The Show! at IPAC, Wollongong 17 - 22 Aug
A comedy with a heart as big as the nation.
They're back! Two of our favourite characters (last seen at IPAC in 2007's The Messiah) are back on stage, this time attempting to answer that perennial question: what does it mean to be Australian?
Hapless thespians Leslie Barrymore Lockett and his sidekick Owen Blunt (blunt by name, blunter by nature) plunder Australian history with the aid of the madcap drama game 'Space Jump'. Take your very own immigration test or relive the Eureka Stockade in rap!
Can one theatre show really encapsulate a nation? It's unlikely, but we'll have a hilarious time finding out with this deliciously silly, larrikin romp from one of Australia's leading theatre companies.

4 Plays About Wollongong
In 2008, to celebrate IPAC's 20th year, Merrigong commissioned two local playwrights, Van Badham and Simon Luckhurst, and two other exciting talents, Mary Rachel Brown and Marcel Dorney, to each write a short play with the very simple premise - tell us a story about Wollongong.
In a classic case of art imitating life, they came back with tales delving deep into Wollongong's rich history and colourful social fabric. From miners' strikes to dog racing, drug dealing to dodgy development deals, these four plays about Wollongong cover it all!
With all four plays performed each night, this production promises to hold a mirror up to our city in all its raw beauty and human complexity.
See it at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre 6 - 18 November 2009.

Lucy Guerin Inc's Untrained in Wollongong, 10 & 11 June 2011
Merrigong Theatre Company is pleased to present Lucy Guerin Inc's acclaimed Untrained as part of its 2011 Season, on 10 & 11 June.
Is it dance, theatre or comedy? Either way, it's not your average contemporary dance experience. Untrained is a quirky and irreverent theatrical exploration that has had sell-out success at festivals in Hong Kong, Sydney and Adelaide.
Four men take to the stage. Two are highly skilled, professional dancers who have performed in theatres across Australia; two are Wollongong locals, Andy Aveling and Malcolm Whittaker, who have no dance training whatsoever. Andy and Malcolm will rehearse with the company for five days ahead of performing at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
Throughout the show, each performer responds to a series of written instructions ranging from the banal to the hilarious: Sing a song! Be a cat that gets electrocuted! Fall down in slow motion! The complex, refined movements one man can do with ease another can only approximate -- but how they approach each task, even how they walk and stand -- reveals an intimate portrait of each man's character.
Untrained emerged from a workshop organised by Lucy Guerin, one of Australia's top contemporary dance choreographers, based on curiosity about how the movements of 'non-dancers' differ from trained dancers. The
concept developed into a theatrical exploration of dance and movement that gives audiences a rare and funny insider's view into the art form.
Melbourne-based Lucy Guerin has built her reputation on movement invention and choreographic structure. Recent works for Lucy Guerin Inc include Human Interest Story, Structure and Sadness, and Corridor. She has also recently collaborated on projects with visual artist David Rosetzky and the Australian Opera.
Concept / Direction: Lucy Guerin
Music: Cusp by Duplo Remote
Producer: Michaela Coventry
Toured by: Performing Lines
Untrained is a wholly satisfying theatre experience... a fascinating combination of dance, theatre, improvisation and multimedia, all presented with just the right amount of quirk and irreverence...I left wanting to sit down and see it all again. It's wonderful, inimitable stuff. - Simonne Michelle-Wells, Australian Stage (March 2009)
[Untrained] was certainly funny, but that transparent comedy was gently underlaid by something else, something profoundly humane, which was much more complex than it seemed. - Alison Croggon, Theatre Notes
Untrained is toured by Performing Lines for Road Work.

Malthouse Melbourne's A Commercial Farce, in Wollongong 22 - 26 March
From Melbourne's iconic Malthouse Theatre comes this biting new Australian comedy. A Commercial Farce is a farce within a farce, driven by wit, cynicism and thigh-slapping humour.
Bill is an experienced theatre director on the verge of a nervous breakdown. With less than 24 hours until the curtain goes up, this production is unravelling fast. Enter Jules, the latest fresh-faced star of TV's Murder Squad. He's the name that's going to sell the tickets and without whom the show is doomed. But when Jules fails to comprehend the simplest of acting tasks (why he has to slip on the banana peel or remember his entrances), Bill's new mission becomes to painstakingly (and hilariously) teach his young pupil the very meaning of farce.
This is comedy at its very best. Expect slapstick, running gags, misunderstandings and an inability to communicate the simplest of messages. A Commercial Farce holds a mirror up to theatre and to life: it's one big, complicated dog's breakfast.
A sharp comedy that unstitches the conventions of comic theatre itself while delivering hearty laughs at the expense of the industry - The Sunday Age

Bangarra Dance Theatre's TERRAIN at IPAC Wollongong 24 & 25 August 2012
Described as a hymn to country, 'Terrain' transports us to Lake Eyre, the place of Australia's inland sea: one of the few untouched natural waterways in the world. Bangarra explores the relationship of Indigenous people to country and how landscape becomes a second skin.
Award-winning Aboriginal artists, choreographer Frances Rings, composer David Page and set designer Jacob Nash, create a powerful and evocative production inspired by the timeless beauty of Lake Eyre.
Beyond the ancient vastness we travel through drought and deluge. We witness the ephemeral transformation of place where nature delivers in abundance, promises all but guarantees nothing.

Big hART presents Namatjira, at IPAC 21 - 24 September 2011
Opening to full houses and standing ovations at Sydney's Belvoir St Theatre in 2010, this premiere production is a beautiful and lyrical work about one of Australia's most important cultural icons.
Albert Namatjira's descendants - third generation watercolour artists themselves - fill the stage with a huge landscape drawing of their desert country as his extraordinary life story unfolds. At the height of his fame, Namatjira's shows sold out within minutes. He later supported over six hundred members of his community, lost two of his ten children to malnutrition, was forbidden to own land, was imprisoned for having a drink with his friends, and died a broken man.
His exquisite watercolours introduced suburban Australia to the beauty of the central desert. Similarly, this sweeping narrative acts as a window through which we can see ourselves and our nation, capturing the intense beauty, depth, opportunism, mateship and injustice that has shaped this country. Namatjira is more than a night at the theatre, it is art come to life.
Wonderfully playful, sincere and moving... Jamieson's is a great virtuoso performance - The Australian
We rose to applaud Namatjira without hesitation on opening night, brought to our feet by this generous and enlightening production - The Sydney Morning Herald
