Ilulissat Icefjord (UNESCO/NHK)
Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland's Ilulissat Icefjord (40,240 ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest (19 m per day) and most active glaciers in the world. It annually calves over 35 km3 of ice, i.e. 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice and more than any other ...

Spencer Museum + Greenland National Museum collaboration
Two graduate students from the University of Greenland, accompanied by Curator and Archaeologist Hans Harmsen of the Greenland National Museum & Archives, visited the Spencer Museum in April 2019 to research the Museum's collection of objects from Greenland collected in 1895 by Lewis Lindsay Dyche. The students photographed a group of objects made by Greenland Inuit people to create a series of three-dimensional images for these objects that will be available online. This research is part of a project that began in 2016 to digitally reunite Greenlandic objects held in museums around the world. Other than the Smithsonian, the Spencer Museum is the only North American institution the project has collaborated with.

Artist Exhibits Melting Icebergs From Greenland At London Museum To Address Climate Change
Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson has brought 30 icebergs to London as part of his Ice Watch exhibition at the Tate Modern. The icebergs were retrieved from the Nuup Kangerlua fjord near Nuuk, Greenland, via refrigerated containers. Removing the ice didn't impact the overall quantity of ice in Greenland, where 10,000 similar blocks are shed every second, says MNN. The icebergs have been on display since December 11 and will remain in place until they've melted. The exhibit is intended to be an urgent plea to stop ignoring the effects of climate change. One geologist from Greenland said, The foundation of human civilization withers away while Greenland melts.

Giant icebergs take over Washington, DC museum
ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION)
STORY: On a hot summer's day in Washington, DC, hundreds of tourists and residents retreated indoors to the National Building Museum for a cool experience.
July 2 was the opening day of the museum's ICEBERGS exhibition -- an interactive and playful space which represents the look and feel of a glacial sea.
One of the things we're trying to do here is to create a situation where you are made to feel like you are under the water if you will. More than two thirds, three quarters of an actual iceberg is under the water, said designer James Corner, CEO of James Corner Field Operations based in New York City.
So we do have spaces above, on the balconies around and we do have a couple of raised over looks where you can see the surface of the water which is this blue mesh net, Corner said.
On the ground level, guests are invited to lounge on iceberg-shaped bean bag chairs.
During the exhibit's opening day, many could be seen eating Japanese kakigori - shaved ice provided by a local restaurant.
But it was the visual properties of the exhibition that many said they found intriguing.
It kind of reminds me of stalactites as if you were in a cave and these icebergs coming down at you, said DC resident Ana-Maria Sinitean.
The designer said the iceberg structures are made from a polycarbonate material which gives them a translucent quality. The structures catch the light differently depending on the time of day.
The museum says the assembly and folding of the triangular panels allows for variation in scale and shape of each object.
Given that this is a building museum, there is a lot of narrative and educational value here in terms of geometry, construction, building and materials, said Corner.
Guest Joe Elliott knows icebergs. He was a doctor on an icebreaker during the International Geophysical Year [1957-1958] that went to the North and South pole. Elliott couldn't help but compare the iceberg-like structures to the real things; Well it's a very stylized picture of icebergs. The icebergs I saw in the Arctic and the Antarctic were much more random.
Entertainment as well as education come together in this exhibition, the designer said.
We have a series of facts inscribed on a number of these icebergs that speak to the sheer volume and quantity of rate and speed of ice melt on the planet. What that means in terms of sea level rise. The challenges of coastal environments and many urban environments including New York City for example and Washington, DC too, said Corner.
He said part of the message was the contrast between cool and hot climates inside versus outside of the museum.
Saturday's opening day was just the tip of the iceberg - the exhibition runs until September 5.

The Icefjord Centre by Dorte Mandrup Arkitekter
The building is designed as an all encompassing framework, partly inside and partly outside that embraces all activities. The wooden framework, designed as a truss, bridges the rugged landscape. It floats lightly above it, curving out over the edge of the Sermermiut Valley offering the spectacular, undisturbed view through the valley and to the icefjord. The framework is covered by a gently sloping, curved wooden boardwalk that becomes the starting point for the World Heritage Trail and at the same time acts as a gathering point, a viewing platform, and an informal seating area.
The roof deck acts as a point of departure for local residents when going for a walk, a place to watch the sunset or gather in the evening sun. Moving through the building the geometry changes in section in a continuous flow. The movement of the structure and form creates a constantly changing view that enhances the experience of the landscape by framing the fantastic viewpoints. The Icefjord Centre will tell the story of ice, of human history and evolution globally as well as. For Greenland and Ilulissat, the Icefjord Centre will open for new opportunities to increase the already growing stream of tourists from all around the world.
According to the tourism strategy for Greenland, the centre is the first of five envisioned visitors’ centres, which together will take Greenland to a whole new level as a tourist destination. The idea is that the many nature experiences and cultural heritage narratives that Greenland has to offer will be communicated at several experience centres geographically across different regions in Greenland, inspired by centres such as the Norwegian Glacier Museum & Ulltveit-Moe Climate Centre in Fjærdal, Norway and the Thingvellir National Park in Iceland. Most Colorful Beach Towns In The World
Travel Much? - Most Beautiful Coastal Towns To Visit ...Polperro, England - You wouldn’t know at first glance, but this idyllic town in Cornwall has a scandalous past. In the 18th century, Polperro’s secluded coastline was a frequent entry point for smugglers, who brought in alcohol, tobacco, and other contraband. They left few traces behind; traditional fishermen’s cottages, dating back to the 16th century, line the narrow streets, and the downtown area has boutiques and galleries. But you can learn about Polperro’s colorful history at the Heritage Museum of Smuggling and Fishing.
The Town of Saint George dates back to the early 17th century. Today, you can visit St. Peter’s, the oldest Anglican church in the Western Hemisphere, built in 1612, and the Unfinished Church, with its majestic stone arches. Other buildings have a decidedly tropical feel: white limestone roofs and exteriors painted in vibrant hues of pink, yellow, blue, and orange.
Italy has no shortage of pretty coastal towns, but we’re partial to Manarola. The tiny Cinque Terre village dates back to the Middle Ages and consists of a jumble of bright cliff-side homes overlooking the sea. Manarola—and the rest of Cinque Terre—is also known for producing white wine and olive oil.
If you were asked to picture a quintessential New England coastal town, chances are you’d envision Camden. The former manufacturing village occupies the green shores of Penobscot Bay, near the base of Mount Battie. Historic windjammers and dozens of other boats bob in Camden’s harbor. The downtown business area, rebuilt after an 1892 blaze and designated the Great Fire Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places, is filled with handsome brick buildings. And white clapboard homes line the residential streets.
At more than 2,000 years old, Kotor is Montenegro’s oldest town. Its historic area has narrow streets and stone buildings dating back to that time. Besides the impressive architecture, Kotor’s surroundings are also quite idyllic. The town sits near the base of the rugged Mount Lovcen, in a quiet corner of the Bay of Kotor.
Lunenburg, on Nova Scotia’s southern coast, is one of the few North American towns designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was founded by the British in 1753 and still has a colonial feel. The fishing and shipbuilding town’s buildings were traditionally painted black and white—those being the cheapest paint colors. In recent years, people began choosing other colors to make their homes and businesses stand out, giving historic Lunenburg a cheerier look.
It’s hard to believe Sidi Bou Said is just minutes outside Tunis, Tunisia’s largest city. The picturesque Mediterranean town feels worlds away, with its bougainvillea-draped stone streets and blue-accented, whitewashed buildings. Sidi Bou Said is also known for its white-sand beaches and impressive harbor.
Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí supposedly found inspiration in this village on Spain’s Costa Brava. He spent time in Cadaqués while growing up and later had his home and studio (now a museum) in neighboring Port Lligat. Cadaqués has a rustic, yet sophisticated charm. Whitewashed houses with tiled roofs line the rocky coast, and art galleries continue to flourish.
Located in Vietnam’s dramatic Halong Bay, with lush mountains as a backdrop, this little village is completely composed of floating homes. About 700 people (traditionally fishermen) live in anchored houseboats, with kids attending a floating school. Cua Van has become a popular tourist attraction, as visitors want to see this unusual way of life for themselves.
In the 1700s, Greenland began the tradition of color-coding its buildings: hospitals were yellow, police stations black, fisheries blue. The colors were the same from town to town. Folks eventually chose more varied pigments for their dwellings. In the archetypal fishing village Ilulissat, the rainbow-hued architecture makes a stark contrast to the Arctic surroundings. Ilulissat is also home to an ice fjord of the same name: a collection of giant icebergs that you can see from the streets.
Oia is a town on the northern coast of Santorini. Perched on cliffs above the sea, it’s the romantic blue-and-white Greek town that has launched thousands of cruise-ship vacations.
The maritime way of life is firmly rooted in the DNA of Paternoster, about 90 miles north of Cape Town. Most buildings are classic fishermen’s cottages, white with dark roofs. The town enforces a strict architectural code to preserve its character. Fittingly, you can get great seafood here. Paternoster hosts a Crayfish and Seafood Festival each November, featuring South African favorites like snoek braai (a regional fish, dried and cooked over coals), potjiekos (seafood stew), and fresh crayfish, cooked to order.

Stormy weather - Nuuk, capital of Greenland
Stormy weather at Nuuk, capital of Greenland. Panorama with the city founder, Hans Egede, iconic statue.
Nuuk (Danish colonial name: Godthåb) is the capital and largest city of Greenland. It is the seat of government and by far the country's largest cultural and economic centre. Nuuk contains almost a third of Greenland's population (~17,000 inhabitants).
Nuuk is the Kalaallisut word for cape. It is so named because of its position at the end of Nuup Kangerlua, a massive fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea known for outstanding nature: waterfalls, sea-cliffs, whales and scattered icebergs. Its latitude, at 64°10' N, makes it the world's northernmost capital, located only a few kilometres farther north than the Icelandic capital Reykjavík.
Nuuk’s waterfront is dotted with brightly coloured houses against the backdrop of Sermitsiaq mountain. Greenland National Museum and Nuuk Art Museum have absolutely interesting displays. The Katuaq cultural center offers films, concerts and art. The modern building of the University of Greenland, Greenland's only university, deserve a visit as well.

Greenland Drone Flight: Greenland is a massive island and autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans. Much of its land surface is covered in ice. Most of its small population lives along the ice-free, fjord-lined coast, particularly in the southwest. Its northerly position, largely above the Arctic Circle, results in natural phenomena such as summers midnight sun and winters Northern Lights. With few roads, travel in Greenland is mainly by air or boat. Glaciers, whales, seals and polar bears can be seen on coastal cruises and on flightseeing trips from the capital Nuuk. The Sarfaq Ittuk ferry links Qaqortoq village to the icebergs of Ilulissat Icefjord. Hiking, snowmobile and dogsled expeditions visit the ice-covered interior. In Nuuk, the Greenland National Museums collections include geological exhibits and 15th-century mummies. Nuuk Art Museum displays Inuit carvings. Fishing villages and colorful cottages dot the southwest coast, and there are 13th-century Norse ruins around Igaliku in the south. [wikipedia // Google]
