Ima Keithel Women Market Imphal Manipur India
Ima Market in Manipur, is probably the only market in the world that is run by all women; a place where equality is preached and practiced.
In Manipuri Ima means mother and Keithel means market. So it is known as the mother’s market. There are 4000 strong shopkeepers who are all women. This unit of women represents the strong foothold of women in the Manipuri society. They stand as glorying example of an equal society. Any women irrespective of her background, religion or community can set a store here. A world that is so intolerant should stand up and take a note from these Imas.
Interestingly if you walk down the corridors of the market during the lunch hours or breaks you can find these women talking over socio-political issues.
These Imas are not only businesswomen but are empowered and knowledgeable about the world around. In a report published in 2005 by the Centre for Organization Research and Education (CORE) Manipur, it says, “these Keithel is not just hubs of commerce, but also of information exchange and socio-political processes.” If we go a little back in history we find that the Nupi Lan or the women’s uprising in Manipur was organized in the markets against the British Raj in 1905.
Exploring Mother's Market 500yr old Ima Keithal | Kangla Fort | Manipuri Thali | Manipur Vlog 03
My third day in Manipur is literary very exciting, Today I am going to explore Ima Keithal A 500 Years old very distinct Market where over 5000 traders managing their stalls are exclusively Women, In other words, it is also called Maa Market. Ima in Manipur called Mother. Ima Market is situated in Thangal Bazaar. Just in front of Ima Market, there is one lane called Paona Bazaar where one can find imported goods but I don't find this market exciting, this market is mostly dominated by Indian Products.
After Ima Keithal I visited Kangla Fort, the pride of Manipur. The kingdom of Manipur was established and developed at Kangla. I was mesmerized by the beauty of Kangla Fort (Kangla Palace).
Then I went to one of the famous restaurants Luxmi Kitchen which has its name in Authentic Manipur dishes but unfortunately, I was late for the Lunch.
So, I think I did hard work to make this vlog If you have any query about Manipur then message me on Mail or Comment box.

The market is divided into two parts: one is for daily commodities and the other for handicraft.
There are several version of its origins, the most popular is the enforcement of the Lallup-Kaba, a forced labour system in which men of the Meitei community were sent to cultivate faraway lands and fight wars. This led the women stayed back in the villages, taking care of their household and selling their farm produce in markets.

Unedited interview from the Mother's Market.
The Mothers’ Market is quite possibly the only bazaar in the world where women discriminate against men. Men can come as customers, but otherwise the market is run and managed entirely by women. The market's located at the heart of Imphal, a remote city in northeastern India.

Ima kentheil, as it is locally known, is the only market in the world wherein you’ll find over 3500 women shopkeepers running their business and signifying the economic participation of Manipuri women. Also known as Mother’s Market (in Manipuri, Ima means mother and kentheil means market), it is a huge marketplace where you can find almost everything. In one section of the market you can get their authentic food items like dried fish to local herbs to clothes and woolens, and traditional costumes, while the other section of the market offers handloom products of the state. There is no clear record of the origin of the market, though researchers have found that the Gazetteer of Manipur in 1786 indicated that all the marketing of the area was conducted by women in open air and markets were mostly held in morning time.

Women selling items ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, fish and dried fish to local herbs, clothes and woollens and traditional costumes. Metal and bamboo items are also found in the shops. The Mekhala / mekhla / mekhela or the hand-woven women's skirt is also to be seen here, in a large pile!
Ima Keithel (Mother's Market) in Imphal is the only market in the world where all the stalls are run by women. Around 3500 women run their business in this market.
The Khwairamband Bazaar, Imphal, Manipur is a marketplace with peculiar smell, sweat, cacophony and busy movements of shoppers and as well the shopkeepers. There is hardly anyone who does not require visiting the market. Khwairamnand bazaar or the popular name Ima market or Nupi Keithel is the world's only all-women marketplace and one of Imphal's main tourist attractions. This is because the most important feature of the market is that 4000 odd shopkeepers are women representing the greater mobility and economic participation of Manipuri women.
The market consists of two main sections -one where the vegetables, fruits and necessary items are sold and the other where the handloom product of the state is sold. Ima market displays local culture, tradition and biodiversity. Products sold here are mostly local products.
