Ludmila Kazinkina - The Abysses of Femininity
Featuring the artworks of acclaimed artist Ludmila Kazinkina.
Biography
Ludmila Kazinkina was born in 1975 in Kaluga (Russia), where she attended the Art School. She first moved to Moscow, then to Spoleto (Italy), where she opened the exhibiting space Aere Prio; in 2003 she moved to Parma, a city in which she managed for a few years the cultural venue Kontrast and where she currently lives and works. She took part in many solo and group exhibitions, the last ones being Baba Yaga (Reggio Emilia, 2009), Golem (Parma, 2009), Eat me (Parma, 2010), Vedma/Strega (Milano, 2010), Solaris (Kaluga and Tarusa, 2010), Mirroring Margarita (Berlino, 2011), You'll be traveling incognito (Woolloomooloo, Australia, 2011), Art Brescia -- International Biennale of Contemporary Art (Brescia, 2011) and Mondi paralleli (Parallel Worlds)/ Параллельные миры (Mosca, 2011). She also participated in the 54th Biennale of Venice, Italian Pavillion, Emilia Romagna Region (Parma, 2011).
The protagonists of the artworks by Ludmila Kazinkina are characters trapped in timeless spaces, confined, a bit like Lewis Carroll's Alice, in a space too small and too dense, while their body expands excessively. Exactly on the threshold between the real and the unreal, normality acquires for a moment a hint of queerness and the figure that the artist studied for years undergoes a slight deformation; even though at the beginning this image is perceived as a out of tune, it then overtakes the vision, to the extent of becoming the prevailing note.

Pool for Fishing-Alexey Vasiliev
The instant images that insistently arise in your head on the pronunciation of the word Kaluga are a tattered portrait of Konstantin Eduardovich Tsialkovsky from the school physics laboratory and Space, Space, Space. It only vaguely connects with the artistic life of the city, and if truth be told it makes no connection whatsoever. The Moscow public, in astonishment discovered several years ago, thanks to the Stop! Who Goes There? Youth Art Biennial, that young artists live and work en masse in Samara, and in Voronezh, and in Novosibirsk, and they hadn't yet put the city of Kaluga on their map of the arts. Although, nevertheless, Alexei Vasiliev, of whom we will hear more below, is actually from this city. His exhibitions have been held at the Artplay Design Center, the Winzavod Modern Arts Center, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, within the framework of the very same Stop! Who Goes There?, and in Lisbon, the UAE, Basel and New York to boot -- an entirely worthy list. And the fact that he remains insufficiently appreciated is perhaps not yet a case of negligence, but within a few years (when Vasilyev hits the mark) it could well be.

The German sauna culture – nudity and all | Meet the Germans
The Germans might not have invented the sauna tradition, but they have very much embraced it. On this week's Meet the Germans, Rachel Stewart finds out why the Germans just love to get naked for a communal sweat session.
Rachel is on a mission to investigate the quirks and idiosyncrasies of daily life in Germany. Every two weeks she explores a new topic - from beer to sauna etiquette to complicated grammar - and heads out to get some tips from the Germans themselves.
Rachel moved from the UK to Germany in 2016. As a relative newcomer she casts a fresh eye over German clichés and shares her experiences of settling into German life. You'll find more from Meet the Germans on YouTube or at dw.com/MeettheGermans.

Plzeňský Prazdroj, better known by its germanic name Pilsner Urquell, is a lager brewed in Plzeň, now in the Czech Republic, since 1842. Pilsner Urquell, the world's first pilsner beer, is now produced by global brewer SABMiller.
Pilsner Urquell was the world’s first-ever blond lager, making it the inspiration for more than two-thirds of the beer produced in the world today. It is hopped with Saaz hops, a noble hop variety which is a key element in its flavour profile, as is the use of soft water and fire-brewing. It is available in 330 ml, 355ml and 500ml aluminium cans and green bottles.

Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev | Audiobook with Subtitles
The fathers and children of the novel refers to the growing divide between the two generations of Russians, and the character Yevgeny Bazarov has been referred to as the first Bolshevik, for his nihilism and rejection of the old order.
Turgenev wrote Fathers and Sons as a response to the growing cultural schism that he saw between liberals of the 1830s/1840s and the growing nihilist movement. Both the nihilists (the sons) and the 1830s liberals sought Western-based social change in Russia. Additionally, these two modes of thought were contrasted with the conservative Slavophiles, who believed that Russia's path lay in its traditional spirituality.
Fathers and Sons might be regarded as the first wholly modern novel in Russian Literature (Gogol's Dead Souls, another main contender, is sometimes referred to as a poem or epic in prose as in the style of Dante's Divine Comedy). The novel introduces a dual character study, as seen with the gradual breakdown of Bazarov's and Arkady's nihilistic opposition to emotional display, especially in the case of Bazarov's love for Madame Odintsova and Fenichka. This prominent theme of character duality and deep psychological insight would exert an influence on most of the great Russian novels to come, most obviously echoed in the novels of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky.
The novel is also the first Russian work to gain prominence in the Western world, eventually gaining the approval of well established novelists Gustave Flaubert, Guy de Maupassant, and Henry James, proving that Russian literature owes much to Ivan Turgenev. (Summary from Wikipedia)

SUMMARY
=======
Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (; Russian: Влади́мир Влади́мирович Маяко́вский; 19 July [O.S. 7 July] 1893 – 14 April 1930) was a Soviet poet, playwright, artist, and actor.
During his early, pre-Revolution period leading into 1917, Mayakovsky became renowned as a prominent figure of the Russian Futurist movement, being among the signers of the Futurist manifesto, A Slap in the Face of Public Taste (1913), and authoring poems such as A Cloud in Trousers (1915) and Backbone Flute (1916). Mayakovsky produced a large and diverse body of work during the course of his career: he wrote poems, wrote and directed plays, appeared in films, edited the art journal LEF, and created agitprop posters in support of the Communist Party during the Russian Civil War. Though Mayakovsky's work regularly demonstrated ideological and patriotic support for the ideology of the Communist Party and a strong admiration of Vladimir Lenin, Mayakovsky's relationship with the Soviet state was always complex and often tumultuous. Mayakovsky often found himself engaged in confrontation with the increasing involvement of the Soviet State in cultural censorship and the development of the State doctrine of Socialist realism. Works that contained criticism or satire of aspects of the Soviet system, such as the poem Talking With the Taxman About Poetry (1926), and the plays The Bedbug (1929) and The Bathhouse (1929), were met with scorn by the Soviet state and literary establishment.
In 1930 Mayakovsky committed suicide. Even after death his relationship with the Soviet state remained unsteady. Though Mayakovsky had previously been harshly criticized by Soviet governmental bodies like the Russian Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP), Joseph Stalin posthumously declared Mayakovsky the best and the most talented poet of our Soviet epoch.
