The Bay Lights - Interview with Leo Villareal
Courtesy of
The Bay Lights is an iconic light sculpture designed by world-renowned artist Leo Villareal. This stunning fine arts experience will live for two years on the San Francisco Bay Bridge West Span, starting with the Grand Lighting on March 5, 2013.
Leo Villareal is known internationally for his light sculptures and site-specific architectural works. His art is part of the permanent collections of prestigious museums including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum in Kagawa, Japan. Recent exhibitions include a survey show organized by the San Jose Museum of Art, San Jose, CA, which continues to tour several museums in the United States. Leo received a BA in sculpture from Yale University in 1990, and a graduate degree from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Interactive Telecommunications Program.
On October 22, Leo unveiled Cosmos, composed of nearly 12,000 mesmerizing LEDs installed above the Johnson Museum's Mallin Sculpture Court at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. Another new piece, Buckyball, largely inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller, opened October 25 in Manhattan's Madison Square Park. Major site-specific works include Multiverse in the National Gallery of Art's Concourse in Washington, D.C. and Hive for the Bleecker Lafayette Street subway station in Manhattan. His work is also a focal point of the James Corner Field Operations design team that will renew Chicago's Navy Pier.
Hall Point - Change Creek Trail -Washington State
The Change Creek Trail is an unofficial hike off the Iron Horse Trail. The roughly hewn trail begins between the trestle bridges that span Change Creek and Hall Creek. It’s just under 2 miles and about 1800 feet of vertical gain. Nice and quick hike that offers great views. To the west lies Mt Tenerife and Green Mountain, to the north Mailbox Peak anchors a ridgeline that flows east over Dirty Harry’s Peak and Putrid Pete’s Peak toward Snoqualmie Pass.

9 Tornadoes Across Minnesota
The only reason I watch The Weather Channel at all, is because they are the only ones who track daily floods. Too bad they lie through their teeth about their origin. As always, anyone with eyes and a brain can see that inexplicable in-place on-land water vapor generation is always the fuel for these storm systems, and Nexrad Frequency Rotation and Heterodyne Gravity Wave Generation is always the reason for these storm systems spawning tornado swarms.
But the Weather Channel ‘meteorologists,’ even as they SHOW exactly what I just described, spin BS misdirection about storms “popping up” or “exploding” out of nowhere, with no plausible explanation of any kind. This 3.5 Billion Dollar company proves every single day that their purpose is to keep the population stupefied and in the dark, while ‘reporting’ back to the perpetrators about the success or failure of the storm creation methods employed.
Watch them for yourself – and see. Not only do they report on the storm creations methods, they actually ROOT for them to succeed, and are DISSAPOINTED when they fail. All the while grinning in the face of the population, as if we are all blithering imbeciles.
This is how ALL tornadoes are manufactured in this country, and as clearly illustrated – you can see it with your own eyes in every single tornado swarm instance.
As I recently said to a donor: “Needless to say, I haven’t been doing this for the last ten years, to get rich. I’ve been doing this, because I think it’s the most important information anyone can have about the planet we live on, and (for a thousand different reasons) being in unique position to deliver this awareness, it is the highest purpose I can serve.”
The people at the 3.5-billion-dollar Weather Channel however, ARE in this business to get rich, and they are obviously very successful at capitalizing on the forced ignorance they peddle. Everyone with half a brain, should be furious and insulted, and should want to expose this daily travesty – as much as I do.
I provide this knowledge freely, because every human should have it. That doesn’t by any stretch of the imagination mean that producing this work is any less of a full-time job or any less exhausting than anything anyone is doing at the Weather Channel. In fact it is exponentially more so since there is just one of me, vs. 3.5 billion dollars’ worth of ‘them.’
So please, don’t just take this knowledge for yourself, without being part of the effort to make sure I’m able to continue this work and deliver this knowledge to the rest of the population that desperately needs it. My commitment, is obvious. All I ask is that my viewers make a fraction of that commitment, and support this work as generously as they can.
As I also said in my recent donor comment: “My supporters should feel – exactly the same way. Supporting this work and providing me with the means to deliver this powerful knowledge, is directly sharing in that highest purpose. With a few real supporters and some real funding, we could wage a campaign of awakening to counter the massive campaign of disinformation. After ten years of work and twenty years of research, I already have the arsenal to do it with. With a fraction of what they spend to keep the population stupefied, we could give people this singular understanding that so far only my handful of viewers have – but all 7 billion people need.”

Mónica Ponce de Léon: Speculations (March 28, 2018)
Hernan Diaz Alonso introduces Mónica Ponce de Léon of MPdL Studio, praising her unique ability to combine prescient research within the academy with a thriving practice.
Mónica Ponce de Léon proposes that the power of architecture is in putting out alternatives. She describes her concern with working within the discipline and with disciplinary tools, knowing how things are made, experimenting with new tools, re-imagine assembly. She discusses important issues such as tolerance, precision, thinness, tectonics, and part to whole. The goal is to re-imagine not only buildings but space.
Ponce de Léon discusses several projects, including:
• Helios House gas station, Los Angeles (2007)
• A high-rise cafeteria/restaurant, in which services are connected by a panelized ceiling
• Own house approached as a single-family home as container that anticipates multiple futures (in process)
• Pompano Beach Library and Cultural Center (2018)
• Conrad Hotel, Battery Park City, NYC (2013), a redesign of 1986 building, focusing on the tall, narrow atrium dominated by a mural-size Sol LeWitt drawing.
She concludes with a short video of the Conrad Hotel atrium.

SUMMARY
=======
James Longstreet (January 8, 1821 – January 2, 1904) was one of the foremost Confederate generals of the American Civil War and the principal subordinate to General Robert E. Lee, who called him his Old War Horse. He served under Lee as a corps commander for many of the famous battles fought by the Army of Northern Virginia in the Eastern Theater, and briefly with Braxton Bragg in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater.
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Longstreet served in the Mexican–American War. He was wounded in the thigh at the Battle of Chapultepec, and afterward married his first wife, Louise Garland. Throughout the 1850s, he served on frontier duty in the American Southwest. In June 1861, Longstreet resigned his U.S. Army commission and joined the Confederate Army. He commanded Confederate troops during an early victory at Blackburn's Ford in July and played a minor role at the First Battle of Bull Run.
Longstreet's talents as a general made significant contributions to several important Confederate victories, mostly in the Eastern Theater as one of Robert E. Lee's chief subordinates in the Army of Northern Virginia. He performed poorly at Seven Pines by accidentally marching his men down the wrong road, causing them to be late in arrival. He played an important role in the success of the Seven Days Battles in the summer of 1862. Longstreet led a devastating counterattack that routed the Union army at Second Bull Run in August. His men held their ground in defensive roles at Antietam and Fredericksburg. Longstreet's most controversial service was at the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863, where he openly disagreed with General Lee on the tactics to be employed and reluctantly supervised several attacks on Union forces, including the disastrous Pickett's Charge. Afterwards, Longstreet was, at his own request, sent to the Western Theater to fight under Braxton Bragg, where his troops launched a ferocious assault on the Union lines at Chickamauga, which carried the day. Afterwards, his performance in semiautonomous command during the Knoxville Campaign resulted in a Confederate defeat. Longstreet's tenure in the Western Theater was marred by his central role in numerous conflicts amongst important Confederate generals. Unhappy serving under Bragg, Longstreet and his men were sent back to Lee. He ably commanded troops during the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864, where he was seriously wounded by friendly fire. He later returned to the field, serving under Lee in the Siege of Petersburg and the Appomattox Campaign.
He enjoyed a successful post-war career working for the U.S. government as a diplomat, civil servant, and administrator. His conversion to the Republican Party and his cooperation with his old friend, President Ulysses S. Grant, as well as critical comments he wrote in his memoirs about General Lee's wartime performance, made him anathema to many of his former Confederate colleagues. His reputation in the South further suffered when he led African-American militia against the anti-Reconstruction White League at the Battle of Liberty Place in 1874. Authors of the Lost Cause movement focused on Longstreet's actions at Gettysburg as a primary reason for the Confederacy's loss ...

The Long Road to Reconciliation - Veterans and the Record of War (Lecture)
Following the conclusion of the Civil War, surviving Union and Confederate veterans returned home to face an unknown future. United by the shared experience of war, these former soldiers bonded through veterans organizations. In 1866, Union veterans established the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1889 former Confederates banded together to create the United Confederate Veterans. Both groups endeavored to right the record of the conflict. Park Historian John Heiser examines how these two groups, through their newspapers, regimental histories, and reunions helped to shape our interpretation of the war

How to make the world better. Really. With Dr. Bjorn Lomborg.
On December 7, 2018, I spoke with Dr. Bjorn Lomborg, author and President of Copenhagen Consensus Center, a singularly innovative and influential US-based think tank. Dr. Lomborg and his team have done the hard conceptual and empirical work necessary to turn good intentions for global improvement into implementable and economically efficient strategies. That's really saying something.
They have, among other things, analyzed the UN Millenial goals (169 of them, which is far too many), prioritizing and rank-ordering them in terms of practical implementability and costs and benefits. Those who claim to truly care about the world's dispossessed could do far worse than to study Dr. Lomborg's work.
