Artist-in-Residence Welcome Event: Ocean Vuong
“What is a country but a borderless sentence, a life?…What is a country but a life sentence?” asks Little Dog, the narrator of Ocean Vuong’s highly anticipated, critically acclaimed debut novel On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous (Penguin Press, 2019). On Wednesday, October 2, the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU was honored to welcome award-winning writer and poet Vuong as its 2019-20 Artist-in-Residence.
Vuong read from his breathtaking novel—a letter from a son to his mother that reveals the intergenerational impact and ongoing haunting of war, violence, and forced displacement. He was joined in conversation by friends and special guests Mahogany L. Browne (Black Girl Magic), Alexander Chee (How to Write an Autobiographical Novel), Monica Sok (A Nail the Evening Hangs On), and NYU Gallatin professor Sinan Antoon (The Book of Collateral Damage).

The Nightmare World of Gang Stalking
More than 10,000 people worldwide claim they're the victims of a vast organized surveillance effort designed to ruin their lives, a phenomenon known as gang stalking. Mental health experts see gang stalking as a symptom of paranoia, but the self-identified victims who insist what they're experiencing is real have come together online and in support groups to share their stories.
VICE met up with a handful of Americans who claim their lives have been derailed by gang stalking to understand what serious consequences the phenomenon presents. Then we hear from Dr. Josh Bazell, one of many physicians who believes the victims of gang stalking are experiencing dangerous delusions that could be treated by mental health professionals.

Belonging and Public Space—Racism and the Right to the City | #OBConf2019
This breakout session explores how othering and belonging is spatialized across local and national contexts in order to influence how racialized groups access common spaces, such as places of work, educational institutions, housing, and other shared public space. The panel draws on case studies in racial geography to highlight the factors that shape various spaces either reproduce or resist messages of racial discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion. Themes include: connecting race and place, racial segregation and displacement, the inclusionary and exclusionary politics of spatial mobility, and strategies for cultivating inclusive local spaces around the world.
Speakers include: Rhonda Itaoui, Kevin Dunn, Omar Salha, Lara Kiswani, and Roberto Zurbano.

Early Modern England: Politics, Religion, and Society under the Tudors and Stuarts (HIST 251)
Professor Wrightson discusses local particularism and regionalism in early modern England and highlights the importance of local customs and economic patterns. He then focuses on the manner in which these local areas, while enjoying a measure of cultural, institutional, and economic autonomy, were simultaneously integrated into a larger national whole. The role of trade (both between English regions and with the Continent via the Netherlands), the importance of market towns within the localities as nexuses of social and economic interaction, the place of 'provincial capitals,' and the pivotal position of the metropolis of London are all considered. Throughout the lecture Professor Wrightson also provides details of early modern regional topography and information concerning the role of urban areas in early modern social and economic life.
