Medics Busy Treating Injured Residents in Xinjiang's 6.5 Magnitude Earthquake
Military officers and medics are busy treating injured residents in Xinjiang's 6.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday, which left one dead.
A total of 22 military medical teams have been dispatched to quake-hit Pishan County in Hotan Prefecture, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and now they are treating 57 injured residents.
Currently, we have set up more than 30 tents. The earthquake-relief medical teams have arrived and are treating injured residents. Then, we will further improve our medical service for locals and help them clear the ruins, said Hu Jianlin, chief of staff of the Southern Xinjiang Military Area Command which is under the Lanzhou Military Area Command, one of China's seven military regions.
In Atushi City, 295 kilometers away from Pishan County, residents also felt the quake when it struck the county on Friday morning.
It was about 09:00, and I was having my breakfast. Suddenly, the room and the ceiling lamps started shaking, said Wang Fei, a resident in Atushi.
We had got up and was going to have breakfast. I felt the room was shaking a little. I had no idea about what was happening. After realizing that it might be an earthquake, we were terrified. As we lived on the fourth floor, it was too late for us to run. Finally, when we decided to hide in the washroom, it stopped shaking, said Wu Keju, another resident in Atushi.
In Pixina Township, Pishan County, a total of 5,840 homes collapsed, according to local official data.

6.4 magnitude earthquake in China's Xinjiang
A shallow 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck China's far western region of Xinjiang on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, with at least three people killed according to Chinese officials.
The epicentre was in Pishan county, 164 kilometres (102 miles) northwest of the city of Hotan and 131 kilometres southeast of Shache, known as Yarkand in Uighur, the language of the local mainly Muslim minority.
It was 20 kilometres deep according to USGS, which initially gave the magnitude as 6.1. A series of aftershocks followed with the strongest measuring 4.8, it said.
The area is on the edge of the Taklamakan desert, but the China Earthquake Administration said three people had died in Pishan, which has a population of 258,000, mainly Uighurs.
Li Hua, a worker at a state-owned farm in Pishan, told the official news agency Xinhua that he felt the quake strongly, with his fourth-floor apartment shaking for about a minute.
I'm feeling dizzy, the report cited Li as saying.
The China Earthquake Network Centre gave the magnitude as 6.5.
China is regularly hit by earthquakes, particularly in its southwestern provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan.
Neighbouring Nepal, on the other side of the Himalayas, was hit by a devastating tremor in April which killed more than 8,800 people.
In May 2008, a 7.9 magnitude quake rocked Sichuan, killing more than 80,000 people and flattening swathes of the province in China's worst earthquake for more than three decades.
Last October, hundreds of people were injured and more than 100,000 displaced after a shallow 6.0 magnitude tremor hit Yunnan province, close to China's borders with Myanmar and Laos.
And last August, a 6.1-magnitude quake struck Yunnan, killing more than 600 people.
Hotan a Homage
presents this photo video from Hotan in Xinjiang province China
These photos were taken in August 2002 in Hotan / Khotan /和田 / خوتەن شەھىرى at the massive Sunday Market. A lot has changed in Hotan since I took the photos. I hope they show what an amazing place Hotan was (and hopefully still is).
The music is by the Uyghur group Qetic. The song is called Tarim.

A magnitude-6.5 earthquake shook China's far-western region of Xinjiang on Friday, killing six people and damaging or collapsing thousands of buildings, authorities said. The quake hit Pishan county in the Hotan region of Xinjiang at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6 miles) shortly after 9 a.m. Friday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.
Buildings were trembling and people rushed to the streets, said Jin Xingchang, an express courier in Hotan city, about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from Pishan. Six people died and about 3,000 houses and other buildings collapsed or were damaged, according to Xinjiang's Bureau of Civil Affairs. The mostly ethnic Muslim Uighur area of Pishan is at the southern edge of the Taklamakan desert near the border with India, and is abundant in mineral resources including coal, crude oil, natural gas and jade.
China Destroying Mosques: the latest tactic in China’s war against Uighur Muslims!
Satellite imagery posted by activists appears to show that the Chinese government is systematically bulldozing mosques that are the latest tactics in China’s war against Uighur Muslims. The destruction of mosques has been reported before in Xinjiang, and online investigation site Bellingcat picked up the thread this time around. Activists on Twitter have recently claimed that China has been destroying historic mosques across Xinjiang province, which is home to a large population of Uighurs, a primarily Muslim minority in China. Tweets by two prominent activists show at least two landmark mosques in Xinjiang have been destroyed as evidenced by before-and-after satellite imagery. ‘’By using open sources and satellite imagery we can locate these mosques and check such claims. We can also potentially narrow down when the alleged destruction took place, Bellingcat explained. Bellingcat used mapping applications to confirm the loss of beautiful and historic buildings, such as the gatehouse at Keriya Mosque and a large portion of the Kargilik Mosque. Where has this mosque gone? tweeted a University of British Columbia law student on Tuesday, referring to the Keriya Aitika Mosque in China's Xinjiang Region. Among the destroyed mosques, Keriya Aitika Mosque in the city of Hotan is the 800-year-old, which was built in 1237 and inducted to the Chinese Architectural Heritage in late 2017. In a report, last September, Human Rights Watch accused the Chinese government of a systematic campaign of human rights violations against Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang.

To Market, To Market: Hotan Food Finds
Hotan's Sunday Market includes foods! Once the yogurt was poured from the bowl it fermented in to the bag I was to carry it in, I decided to collect enough for a meal and head home before snagging agents in the crowds would cause a leak. Hotan, spelled Hetian in Pinyin, is on the southern edge of the Taklamakan desert in Xinjiang, China.
Hotan Musicians
I came across a couple of musicians playing for some sort of ceremony in Hetian (Hotan), Xinjiang province, China. I never did find out what for. A rather simple duo, one played the dulcimer (tsymbaly in Ukrainian) and the other played a pair of bongo-like drums with sticks.
