Japan Trip: Imaicho Town atmospheric machiya attractive town to stroll, Nara13 Japan Moopon
Imaicho Town is a preserved historic district, which is unusually large, located near Asuka in Nara Prefecture. Unusually because preserved districts in Japan are usually limited to a few buildings or sometimes only a street. On the other hand, Imaicho offers visitors a chance to wander through the many alleys within an entire small town. However, Imaicho does not entirely keep its original state, and telephone wires and vehicles may occasionally disturb the historical atmosphere. Not only walking through the streets and visiting Shonenji Temple, but visitors can also enter a number of Imaicho's preserved buildings. There are three residences that are open to the public: Among them, foremost is the Imanishi Residence, the oldest and most impressive of Imaicho's residences. Dating back to 1650, it was a residence of the town's most powerful family, the Imanishi Family, whose members served as town administrators. Others that are open to the public are the Imai Machiya-kan near the temple and the Yonetani Residence. Both double functioned as shops and residences of merchant families who specialized in hardware products. Furthermore, there is a Hanairaka information center, maybe interesting for tourists, located just southeast of the preserved area, where a model of the town and a few old photos are displayed.
Imanishi Residence Hours: 10:00 to 17:00 (Entry ends at 16:30.) Closed: Mondays, Obon (August 16 to 22), New Year (December 25 to January 6) Admission: 400 yen
