The Village of the Secret Kilns - Okawachiyama (Imari City)
Okawachiyama of Imari City used to have the Nabeshima Clan Kilns, which produced masterpiece porcelains such as Iro-Nabeshima, Nabeshima-Sometsuke and Nabeshima-Seiji under the Clan's strict surveillance. The area is enclosed on three sides by mountains and has a distinctive atmosphere of secret kilns resembling landscapes described in Oriental paintings. Historical heritages including the remains of old kilns and various ceramic objects found on mountain roads are in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature and peaceful neighborhoods.

The manufacturing of porcelain began around the year 1600, and before long, kilns by the Saga Nabeshima clan were constructed so that they could create Nabeshima ware to be offered especially for the Shogun and his daimyo (feudal lords). About 30 pottery workshops are located within this village surrounded by the lush green mountainside which creates a unique atmosphere. Annually from mid-June to August, the Fuurin (Wind Chime) Festival is held, and throughout the village, you can view the scene of hanging Imari wind chimes which are beautiful to the eyes and ears.

The village of the Secret Kilns. ” Imari-Okawachiyama ” 秘陶の里 伊万里 大川内山
About 350 years ago.
Nabeshima clan that had ruled the northern part of Kyushu is a collection of pottery artisans in this land.
Cliff behind, before the there is a barrier, they use a technique unique and secret, we continued to make pottery.
Now is this whole land has become a country of historic sites, potteries of 23 has been making pottery.
Okawachiyama, along with a historic historic sites, it is a traditional village, is an artisan group that produces the traditional craft.
350年前、佐賀鍋島藩の御用窯として有田焼の職人の技能の高いものを囲って作られた大川内山。
後方には断崖、前方には関所と厳重な警戒のもとで、名陶伊万里焼の技法が脈々と守られてきました。
今では国の史跡となっていますが、23の窯元が今も伝統の技法で伊万里焼を生み続けています。
当時の面影を残す神秘的な雰囲気を御覧ください。

伊万里焼で有名な伊万里市の”大川内山”を撮影。
中世から続くこの集落は、優れた技術を秘匿するために関所を設けて厳しく人の出入りが制限されていました。
鍋島藩の御用釜として隆盛を極め、日本で最も有名な焼き物の産地として世界に知られています。
この集落一帯は、大川内山鍋島窯跡として国の史跡指定を受けています。
今でも多くの窯元が作陶を営んでおり、多くの直売店が並ぶ観光地として有名です。

It is in Imari-shi of Saga and is world-famous as Japanese traditional earthenware.
A lot of ceramists of the Imari ceramic ware live and still produce earthenware.
Around the Middle Ages, the comings and goings of the person to the village were limited strictly to protect a superior technique.
It was the secret village which made earthenware here.
The village whole area is appointed on a historic spot of Japan.
