Japanese Antiques Imari Vases and Ceramics from Arita
Timothy Langston takes a look at items at his gallery and reflects on the history of Imari Vases and Ceramics from Arita in Japan.
I've always had a fascination and love of Japanese works of art, and here at the gallery we have always specialised in Imari porcelain. Examples such as these around me which date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries: they're wonderfully decorative and, in the same way that Chinese porcelain adds a great deal of colour and form to an interior, these pieces which were made, quite often for export to the Dutch market and from Holland were then transported to countries such as Britain, they produced wonderful decorating opportunities for major houses of the time.
These pieces here use blue red and gold glazes on a white body - an almost translucent body. This is typical of Imari Ware which was produced in a town called Arita which was invaded by the Japanese where they discovered this special clay called Kaolin from from that they managed to you imitate Chinese porcelain wares and the production thereof. In the mid 17th century the Japanese imposed a self-isolation policy and the only nation allowed trade with them in fact with Holland and so the Dutch became the only single conduit by which other European nations could buy Japanese wares such as
Imari porcelain.
Once this policy was revoked in the mid-nineteenth century there was an international sensation caused by the rediscovery of Imari wares. Nineteenth century pieces such as some examples we have here use bolder colours - often tomato red glazes with really deep blues but again placed upon white grounds.
Another example which is worth looking at is this extraordinary dragon vase as you'll see there is a black ground with this extraordinary selection all polychrome decoration upon the surface and rather nicely you see - and this is another typical feature of Imari ware - this kimono design which is decorated around collar and the foot of the vase. Kimonos of course were, in their own way, an extraordinary means of decoration and provided a backdrop for some of the most creative designs of Japanese decoration and they were often incorporated into Imari porcelain designs: and you can see that here.
We have a very large selection of Japanese porcelain as well as Chinese porcelain. And these pieces which were made to furnish European homes still adorn these houses today we regularly asked about the story Imari and if you'd like to discover a little more, do come and see us here at the gallery on The Pimlico Road.
When you're thinking Imari,
think Timothy Langston.

The Village of the Secret Kilns - Okawachiyama (Imari City)
Okawachiyama of Imari City used to have the Nabeshima Clan Kilns, which produced masterpiece porcelains such as Iro-Nabeshima, Nabeshima-Sometsuke and Nabeshima-Seiji under the Clan's strict surveillance. The area is enclosed on three sides by mountains and has a distinctive atmosphere of secret kilns resembling landscapes described in Oriental paintings. Historical heritages including the remains of old kilns and various ceramic objects found on mountain roads are in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature and peaceful neighborhoods.

Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto: All 10,000 Gates Explored ★ ONLY in JAPAN #24 夜の京都伏見稲荷神社
Adventure in Kyoto! Loads of culture and history in one city.
We've got all that and more in this episode of ONLY in JAPAN.
Kyoto's Shrine of 10,000 'Torii' or Gates is simply awesome. It's also ranked as Japan's no.1 attraction for foreign tourists*
Yes, it can be crowded during the day, but we'll explore this mysterous shrine at night when no one is around -- except the wildlife and a few stragglers.
This time, John will explore and explain Kyoto's most popular shrine, Fushimi Inari.
HISTORY:
Fushimi Inari is full of history going back to the year 717!
John interviews one of the Shinto priests and unravel some of the history that might not be in guidebooks. The lengend of Fushimi Inari is revealed!
Are those gates orange or red?
What's the meaning behind the color?
Which big Hollywood movie was this shrine featured in?
Who cleans all these gates?
John wants to know.
WHEN TO VISIT:
It may seem impossible to escape the crowds here, but you can!
The hours are officially listed as 10:00 to 16:00 but the shrine is open to all free of charge 24 hours a day.
Best of all it's FREE! Why? The gates!! They're all bought by people and businesses to bring them luck.
The best time to see it is at night. It's when most locals go with thewir friends, high school couples can be seen climbing up together. Night time adventurers will also see a lot of cats! That rustling you hear on the woods outside the orange gates may not always be a cat though ....
KYOTO BY BICYCLE:
How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Kyoto Station?
I could draw you a map, but it's much better to show you by bicycle!
Rent a cycle for the day and see more of Kyoto. Cheap and easy.
KCTP (Kyoto Cycling Tour Project) has a good variety of city bicycles for the surrounding hills or the city. You can reserve online or call and have the bike waiting for you as soon as you arrive.
The city is not always cycle friendly so keep to the left side, use the light after dark and try to avoid pedestrian sidewalks.
HOW TO GET THERE:
Here's the Google Map
Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto Station for 3 stops or rent a bicycle :) Taxi takes about 10-15 minutes.

Village OKAWACHI that produce earthenware from about 1600
It is in Imari-shi of Saga and is world-famous as Japanese traditional earthenware.
A lot of ceramists of the Imari ceramic ware live and still produce earthenware.
Around the Middle Ages, the comings and goings of the person to the village were limited strictly to protect a superior technique.
It was the secret village which made earthenware here.
The village whole area is appointed on a historic spot of Japan.

伊万里の市街地を歩き撮り~田舎の街レビュー Japan Rural Scene IMARI-City
