A Day in Hanok
한옥에서 하룻밤
Eaves create a beautiful scene with the blue sky with a narrow wooden porch running along the outside of rooms keeping a record of time.
Hanok, Korean traditional house, with hundreds of years of history are taking us back in time during autumn.
Andong is a small city in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province where traditional culture is embedded in the whole region.
The Nakdonggang River, the longest river in Korea, flows through the city.
The river offers peaceful, serene scenery, and there is hanok against Yeongnamsan Mountain.
Over the stone wall, a majestic traditional house captures the eye. It is called Imcheongak.
Imcheongak is open for everyone. Also, some 40 big and small parts of the house capture the passing of time.
The in-house cultural commentator provides an insight into history. The house must be a pleasant surprise for these children who are used to modern housing.
(korean, )
I was very surprised to hear that this house has 99 rooms.
(korean, )
I hope the house will be preserved for the next generations to learn about Korean history and enjoy its imposing beauty.
Preservation will be the key.
Imcheongak was built in 1519... about 500 years ago, famous for its size?99 rooms? and cultural value. This grand house is designated as national cultural heritage.
For the same reason, the descendants are currently using 7 rooms as a guesthouse after minimal maintenance work.
About 10 square meters in size, the room looks cozy and humble.
This place brings the natural world inside, a signature trait of hanok. Therefore, guests can get a glimpse into the way Korean ancestors enjoyed nature and life.
(korean, )
I can enjoy the crisp autumn breeze here, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. It’s a wonderful place.
The Lee clan of Andong was a noble family where 7 independence patriots came from. The house was a cradle of Korean independence movement during Japanese occupation.
And Japan built a railroad just 7m away from the house in response to their participation in the independence movement.
During the construction process, about half of the house was lost.
(korean, )
This house was built with the mountain in back and the river in front. Along the river was a path leading to the upper area.
Also, there were many houses around Imcheonggak, including some thatch-roofed homes, which were all destroyed for the construction of the railway.
The railway noise and vibrations still damage the cultural heritage. The good thing is the double tracking of the railway is currently under construction, and the house will be able to maintain an adequate distance from the railway soon.
More guests visit the house at sunset.
The owner serves chrysanthemum tea and Korean sweets to the guests who had to make a long journey to the house. It’s their way of expressing their gratitude to people who treasure the cultural value of Imcheongak.
(korean, )
I find modern houses somewhat artificial. Therefore, I chose this hanok to show my children the beauty of Korean traditional houses
and to let them experience what it is like living in hanok.I wanted to experience that myself as well. That’s why I picked this house,
and I’m very happy with my decision so far.

[Arirang Prime] Andong and Yeongju, Korea's spiritual capitals
Walking on Land of Pride
Dany Arens, who is from the U.S., has been living in Korea for 9 years. He is the lead singer of the rock and roll band Used Cassettes. Although it was his attraction to the country's dynamic changes that made him decide to live in Seoul, he knows that the city isn't Korea's true side. He actually was able to see what kind of a country it really is by traveling across it when he first came here. This time he embarks on a journey with his friend Su-ha, who is a photographer. Just like the peddlers in the past who used to travel across the country to find products that would please their customers with their keen eyes and good senses, the two friends recommend places where one can fully experience Korea's true charms.
Andong and Yeongju, Korea's spiritual capitals
Gyeongsangbuk-do has the highest number of traditional houses and villages in Korea. Having carefully preserved the cultural heritages of the Joseon Dynasty, which existed for 500 years from the 14th century, the province is also the hometown of tradition where several head families have taken root for centuries. The two friends head to Yeongju and Andong, cities that both symbolize the Korean tradition. Look for the traces left behind by Confucianism, the underlying foundation of the mentality of Koreans and the norms they live by, at Sosu Seowon and Seonbichon Village. Meanwhile, Imcheonggak House, the birthplace of Lee Sang-ryong who gave up his family wealth as well as the comfortable life of the succeeding grandson of his family to dedicate himself to the independence movement during the Japanese rule, makes one think about the true meaning of noblesse oblige.

Restoration begins at Imcheonggak, home of prominent independence activist
철길로 끊긴 독립운동 산실...안동 임청각 복원 시작
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement and the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government in 1919.
To commemorate that anniversary, some historically meaningful places are to be restored.
One such place is the home of a renowned independence activist.
Lee Min-sun reports.
The traditional Hanok houses of Imcheonggak in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, were once the home of independence activist Lee Sang-ryong
Lee served as the first premier of the Korean Provisional Government and was one of the founders of Shinheung Military School or the Military School of the New Rising, which raised an army of independence fighters.
Built in 1519, Imcheonggak served as a cradle of Korea's independence movement during the Japanese occupation and is designated as a national cultural heritage site.
Lee established the Military School of the New Rising and raised some 3,500 independence fighters. 11 people from his family have been distinguished as independence activists.
Imcheonggak used to have 99 rooms but now only about half remain. Many of the rooms were destroyed when Japan built a railway through part of the property.
After some 70 years, the government has decided to restore Imcheonggak. The railways will be removed and some of the rooms will be restored.
Once the railroad is relocated and restoration is done... it will become a meaningful and educational place to teach patriotism.
The government will spend about 25 million U.S. dollars for the restoration which will be completed by 2025.

[Arirang Prime] Ep.294 - Walking on Land of Pride _ Full Episode
Gyeongju, a city imbued with a thousand-year tradition
For approximately a thousand years, from 57 B.C. to 935, Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Dynasty. Home to UNESCO Cultural Heritages including Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto, as well as 36 well-preserved royal tombs and other structures, the entire city is often referred to as a roofless museum. Join Danny and Su-ha as they learn seonmudo and stroll along Hwangridan-gil Road, a youthful must-visit spot that has newly gained popularity, and fall in love with the marvelous harmony between the traditional and the modern.
Cheongsong, a county blessed with nature and its magnificent landscapes
Located in the northern, inland region of Gyeongsangbuk-do, the entire county of Cheongsong has been registered as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Here, Earth has left behind traces that show diverse geological eras, from 540 million years ago all the way to the Cenozoic period. In short, Cheongsong is a pristine gift of nature. Feel the atmosphere of autumn at Juwangsan National Park, which has been lit up by the stunning autumn foliage, as well as at Jusanji Pond, where the landscape looks as if it's part of a traditional Korean painting. Chicken baeksuk, Cheongsong's special dish, adds to the delight of the journey. It is cooked with the water from Dalgi Yaksu mineral spring, another famous body of water at Juwangsan Mountain.
Pohang, a city of vitality and a new beginning
Located in southeast Korea, next to the ocean, Pohang is famous as and proud to be the industrial city that drove the country's modernization. After visiting Jukdo Market, a vibrant place full of life, Danny and Su-ha head to Homigot where they watch the sunrise and make resolves, embracing new hope. Join them in their journey that is filled with music and photography.
