Kaiserliche Hofburg

Innsbruck royal palace, Austria
The Hofburg, Imperial Palace of the Habsburgs in Innsbruck, Austria is perhaps one of the three most significant cultural buildings in the country, along with the Hofburg Palace and Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. The Hofburg is the main building of a large residential complex once used by the Habsburgs that still includes the Noblewomen's Collegiate Foundation, the Silver Chapel, the Hofkirche containing Emperor Maximilian's cenotaph and the Schwarzen Mandern, the Theological University, the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, Innsbruck Cathedral, the Congress, and the Hofgarten (Court Garden).
The original Hofburg palace was constructed from several elements under Archduke Sigismund around 1460. This structure included sections of medieval fortifications that ran along the eastern city wall. The building incorporated the Rumer Gate, which was later converted into the Heraldic Tower in 1499 by Jörg Kölderer under Emperor Maximilian I. The palace was expanded several times during the next 250 years. Between 1754 and 1773, the Hofburg palace underwent two stages of Baroque structural changes under Empress Maria Theresia: the south tract was constructed (1754–1756) on the Hofgasse according to plans by J. M. Gumpp the Younger, and the main façade was added (1766–1773) on the Rennweg according to plans by C. J. Walter. During this period, the Giants' Hall was completed with ceiling frescoes by F. A. Maulbertsch, and the Imperial Chapel was built (1765) in the room where Maria Theresa's husband Emperor Francis I had died.
Today, the Hofburg contains five themed museum areas: Maria Theresa's Rooms from the eighteenth century, Empress Elisabeth's Apartment from the nineteenth century, a Furniture Museum, an Ancestral Gallery, and a Painting Gallery. These themed museum areas illustrate various aspects of the political and cultural history of the former imperial palace, which remained in the possession of the Habsburgs for more than 450 years.
Max 500 Lightshow in the Imperial Palace Innsbruck
The Max 500 Lightshow in Innsbruck's Imperoal Palace, the Hofburg, takes spectators on a magical journey back in time to the days of the Emperor Maximilian I, sometimes known as the 'Last Knight of the Middle Ages.'
The Emperor’s court jester leads visitors on a fascinating journey through time, linking historical events with newly interpreted scenes in a modern, amusing and sometimes surprising way. Impressive XXL-format effects transport the person, character and deeds of Emperor Maximilian I into the 21st century.
The time tunnel draws you into the “Castle of Tournaments”, telling of “Love and Marriage” and the “Legend of the Martinswand Wall”. The journey continues to the “Court Festival” and the “Influence and Legacy of the Emperor”. The last stations are “Casting, Printing and Industry” and “Hunting” before the time tunnel brings you back to the present. The LIGHTSHOW MAX 500 might even be a vision of the future. Come and see for yourself!
Regarded as the “Last Knight” of the Middle Ages, he shaped the early Renaissance thanks to his policies in war and marriage. He was also a patron of the arts and sciences. He chose Innsbruck as his town of residence and left his mark throughout the territory of Tyrol, with the Golden Roof, the Hofburg imperial palace and the Hofkirche church among the most famous traces.

EXPLORING INNSBRUCK: AUSTRIA'S most beautiful medieval town, what to see, top sites to visit ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's travel back in time by strolling through the 800 year old city center of Innsbruck. A classic Austrian hybrid of Gothic and Baroque, the Old Town exudes a special charm and sophistication that is unique in the Alps.
In the heart of Tirol, only two hours away from Salzburg and Munich, Innsbruck’s Old Town is a small area of sturdy medieval houses, many painted in lively pastel colors and supported by sloping buttresses. As you stroll along the main street of the Old Town Innsbruck, you’ll feel as if you had taken a trip back in time to an era of knights and medieval merchants. Stop by the Folk Art Museum, the Imperial Palace, and the Imperial Chapel, all of which give great insight into Innsbruck’s past.
Busy street cafes afford great views of Innsbruck’s landmark, the Golden Roof, and its 2,738 gold-plated copper tiles. Constructed for Emperor Maximilian I. in the early 15th century, it served as a royal box where he could sit in luxury and enjoy tournaments in the square below. Today, Maximilian would see a busy shopping street with many exquisite boutiques, crafts-shops and restaurants.
Austria is a German-speaking country in Central Europe, characterized by mountain villages, baroque architecture, Imperial history and rugged Alpine terrain. Vienna, its Danube River capital, is home to the Schönbrunn and Hofburg palaces. It has counted Mozart, Strauss and Freud among its residents. The country’s other notable regions include the northern Bohemian Forest, Traunsee Lake and eastern hillside vineyards.

Hofburg - Imperial Palace and the surrounding area
Welcome to the former imperial capital of the Habsburg Empire. See some pictures from buildings of the Austrian Empire.
Innsbruck, Austria
Innsbruck is an outstanding tourist destination, it has something of a central European capital about it with its royal palace and gardens and other regal looking, almost imperial style architecture. Of course it is the capital of Tyrol! It is surrounded by the Karwendel mountains with the Hafelekarspitze reaching 2,334 metres to the north and the Patscherkofel 2,246 m and Serles 2,718 m to the south which are close to the Brenner Pass some 30 km from Innsbruck.
Innsbruck is an internationally renowned winter sports centre, and hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. Innsbruck also hosted the first Winter Youth Olympics in 2012.
For my stay, I left my motorhome at the excellent Natterersee campsite which is linked to Innsbruck by a free bus which runs roughly once an hour.
The outstanding tourist sites are of course the old town which is a mixture of German and Italian to my eye. I also went up the Nordkette mountain which is linked to the centre of town via a finicular railway. One can also see the Alpine Zoo which is overlooks the town to the north and has an excellent thematic collection of Alpine wildlife. The famous Swarovski factory is nearby at Wattens, one can take a bus which runs every two hours or so.

Innsbruck, capital of Austria’s western state of Tyrol, is a city in the Alps that's long been a destination for winter sports. Innsbruck is also known for its Imperial and modern architecture. The Nordkette funicular, with futuristic stations designed by architect Zaha Hadid, climbs up to 2,256m from the city center for skiing in winter and hiking or mountaineering in warmer months.
The centerpiece of Innsbruck’s medieval Altstadt (old town) is the Goldenes Dachl, an iconic, circa-1500 landmark with an elaborate Gothic balcony and copper-tiled roof. The Hofburg imperial palace affords a glimpse into the decadent Habsburg dynasty via guided tours. At the 16th-century Hofkirche (Court Church), statues, including German artist Albrecht Dürer's King Arthur, surround a memorial to Emperor Maximilian I. Innsbruck: the vibrant capital of the famous Austrian region Tirol. Located between the mountains, alongside the river Inn. This city should be high on your list if you’re looking for a nice mix of culture, nature and sports / activities.
Innsbruck is a heaven on earth for winter sports enthusiasts, with numerous ski areas at just a short throw from the city. You can even take a lift right from the city centre, which will take you up to the Nordkette mountain in about 15 minutes.
All skiing and boarding aside, Innsbruck has much more to offer! Visit the historic city center and take a stroll through the cosy streets. You’ll encounter many interesting and colorful buildings, including the Hofburg imperial palace (once home to the empress Maria Theresia) and the remarkable ‘Goldenes Dachl’ (Golden Roof). Don’t leave without having a taste of ‘Strudel’.
Other fun things to do: visit the Alpenzoo, which (as the name implies) houses some alpine animals, like lynxes, eagles and brown bears. Or take a stroll around Schloss Ambrass, a nearby castle in Renaissance style. Sport fans will enjoy a visit to the Olympic Bergisel Park, with its iconic ski jump tower.
All these locations are featured in this video.
