History is my second love, after food. And in fact, sometimes I think it might be my first love!
When I moved to Madrid I fell in love with the city's history. While the Spanish capital may not be the oldest city in Europe, it was much older than New Zealand! And it was full of so many wonderful stories of intrigue, had been the home of so many fascinating people, and the centre of so many dramatic events in Spanish history.
So in this walking tour - which is based on the tour I designed when I designed Devour Tours' most popular Tapas, Taverns & History Tour - I take you through the history of Madrid, starting at the beginning and right up to the civil war.
Here are the places we stop:
1. Plaza de Oriente: Location of Madrid's royal palace and the spot where the city was founded!
2. Plaza de Ramales: Where Spain's most famous painter - Diego de Velazquez - may be buried!
3. Calle del Factor: Gorgeous views of the cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Casa del Campo (the old royal hunting grounds, now an enormous public park).
4. Calle de la Almudena: The admittedly not so impressive remains of an old church. But I love the statue of the Curios Neighbour, and also knowing that this was the former location of a mosque.
5. Calle de San Nicolás: Love this little hidden corner with Madrid's oldest standing church from the 12th century (and which potentially is the site of a former mosque
6. Plaza de la Villa: Once the most important square in the city!
7. Calle del Codo: Love this tiny little hidden street - also the location of the famous cookie nuns!
8. Plaza Puerta Cerrada: Right at the top of Calle Cava Baja (tapas heaven!), and where the famous motto of Madrid can be read on the walls - Over water my walls of fire are built.
9. Plaza Mayor: The city's main historic square - site of inquisition trials, bull fights, fires and the Christmas market.
10. Puerta del Sol: The people's square! Home of protests, uprisings and New Year's Eve celebrations!
11. Casa del Abuelo: Amazing garlic prawns, cooked right before your eyes!
12. Plaza Santa Ana: A gorgeous square surrounded by cafes and bars, and with my favourite statue in Madrid of Federico García Lorca.
13. Calle Lope de Vega: The final resting place (we think!) of Spain's most famous author - Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote)
Enjoy!

4. EPIC MADRID FOOD TOUR! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid has amazing food.. there I said it! Often when people think of Madrid they think of museums and art and maybe a trip to Toledo. But trust me, this city has an incredible food scene that is less touristy and more underground compared to some other cities in Spain. So, I wanted to make this Madrid food guide so that you can enjoy it like a true local!
Today I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10 incredible bites. We start with the best chocolate in the city (melted from actual chocolate) at an over 100-year-old pastry shop. Then we head to a local and hidden family-run joint for the city’s top Spanish omelette (tortilla española) and a beer (caña).
Next up! Vermouth time. We nip across to the San Miguel market for a sweet red vermouth on tap just like the locals do (along with marcona almonds, campo real olives and a local skewer). Then we head to a SECRET STOP. Cloistered nuns who bake cookies in - the cookies are delicious and moreish and the experience is truly one-of-a-kind. As a friend used to say, like doing a drug deal!
OK… getting full. Next stop - jamón… ham! And the good stuff - acorn-fed jamón ibérico in a family-run ham shop. Around the corner we head to an over 100-year-old tapas bar for one of the most delicious tapas in the city - bull tail stew parcel, paired with a Rioja wine.
Next it’s Madrid’s most famous bite - the calamari sandwich. There are so many places that do this, but we head for the best one! And for more seafood, we swing around into the La Latina neighbourhood for the best bacalao in the city, served with a white wine in a place that is a true Madrid rough-and-tumble tapas bar.
And then - tapas. We swing into Casa Toni, a fantastic tapas bar that does brilliant sweetbreads - mollejas - a delicacy in many restaurants around the world, and here deliciously cooked with skill on the griddle.
And finally, dessert … we head to the most famous pastry shop in the city for the napolitana de crema. The perfect sweet end to a fabulous Madrid food tour. Siesta time!
Want to find those secret nun cookies? Head to Calle Codo (near Plaza de la Villa) and where you see the door with the sign Venta de Dulces, ring the top bell. Hours are Mon-Fri 0930-1300 then 16.30 - 18.30.
Here's the list of where we went:
1. El Riojano
2. Cerveriz
3. Mercado San Miguel (La Hora del Vermut was the stall)
4. Nuns
5. Mercado Jamon Iberico
6. Anciano Rey de los Vinos
7. Casa Revuelta
8. La Campana
9. Casa Toni
10. La Mallorquina

Tour my Apartment in Madrid! **Going to Spain? check out Amazon's best guidebook recommendation:
In this video I give you a short tour of my apartment and another apartment from the same landlord. I explain what websites to use to find apartments as well. The tour was made on an iPhone so I apologize for the narrow view.
***Piso is the word in Spain that means apartment or flat. ***Important Tip
I was renting this apartment while I was a language assistant with the North American Language and Cultural Ambassadors Program (Auxiliares de Conversacion) in Madrid. I had a contract for six months, that I actually ended up breaking early because I had to move back to the US for family reasons, but at least it gives you an idea of what an apartment can look like.
The white box above the TV is the AC Unit and the white metal bar thing attached to the wall by the window is the heating unit. These aren’t typical in the USA so that is why I am pointing those out.
I lived about 10 metro stops from SOL, the city center where everyone goes to meet/hangout near GRAN VIA where people usually go to shop or eat ice cream. I recommend living closer to Sol, within maybe a few metro stops, because that is where most people meet up and go out.
Please leave any additional tips in the comments below and if you enjoyed this video please like it, subscribe and share this video with a friend! Also, check out my online store for everything Spain! Muchas Gracias

???? ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid is an amazing place to eat tapas! But there are so many tapas bars that the challenge is knowing exactly where to go! I love a lot of the tapas bars in the old centre of Madrid, but I also love to escape into the local neighbours where the locals eat - because that's where you can find some truly spectacular tapas. If I were going to write a Madrid travel guide, it would definitely include a lunch or dinner of tapas in this part of town!
In this video my wife Yoly and I (follow her @flamencoguide) dive into the Ibiza neighbourhood, which is REALLY close to the old centre (quick metro or short walk) for five of my most favourite tapas bars in all of Madrid.
If you love Spanish food, this is the video for you! We eat plump prawns, slow-cooked bull tail stew, scallops, artichokes, venison, partridge, fresh fish... I could go on and one. And of course we pair it all with great Spanish wine!
I've included info below on how to get to this area. And remember - you don't need to reserve a table at any of the bars. Just turn up and hit the bar! You can reserve a table for a slightly calmer experience... but I'll leave that up to you!
#SpainRevealed #JamesBlick #madrid
HOW TO GET TO THESE BARS
The neighbourhood is called Ibiza (yes, just like the island!), and so you should head to Metro Ibiza (line 9). Alternatively, the neighbourhood is just on the other side (the east side) of the Retiro park. So one idea is to walk across the Retiro before lunch and then hit these bars. Or, take the Metro to Ibiza and then you can sleep it off (or walk it off) in the park afterwards! Or... another idea is go to the Prado Museum during the day, and then wander across the park and hit these bars for dinner.

MADRID TOURIST ATTRACTIONS: Madrid Travel Guide. Things to do in Madrid (Spain)
All the essential MADRID TRAVEL information in one video, where you discover the BEST THINGS TO DO IN MADRID.
Madrid -capital of Spain- is rich in monuments and landmarks.
In this video we present our selection of the more interesting and important places to see in Madrid.
Nº 10.- TEMPLE OF DEBOD
The Temple of Debod is the oldest building in Madrid, although it was not built in our city but in ancient Nubia, in southern Egypt, more than 2.200 years ago.
Also from the Temple of Debod you may find some of the best sunsets ever!
Nº 9.- PLAZA DE LA VILLA
In the Plaza de la Villa is the oldest civil building built in Madrid, it is the Tower and House of the Lujanes, a palace house of the XV century, Gothic-Mudejar style.
There are also two other emblematic buildings: the Casa de Cisneros, a Renaissance palace from the XVI century, and the Casa de la Villa, a baroque palace from the XVII century.
Nº 8.- PUERTA DE ALCALÁ
The ‘Puerta de Alcalá’ is one of the most popular symbols of Madrid. In addition to the monumental function, it served as gateway to the city until just a century and a half ago.
It is the first arch of triumph built in Europe, after the fall of the Roman Empire.
In neoclassical style, it was built in the XVIII century by direct commission of Carlos III.
Nº 7.- GREAT WAY (GRAN VÍA)
The ‘Gran Vía’ is one of the most emblematic streets of Madrid.
Started in 1910, it was settled, The ‘Great Way’ is the main artery of the heart of Madrid. It has many iconic buildings: Metropolis, Telefónica, Capitol and so on.
Nº 6.- CIBELES
The Plaza de Cibeles is one of the most well-known squares in Spain. It is currently located in the Palacio de Comunicaciones - ‘The Palace of Communications’, a beautiful eclectic building from the beginning of the 20th century. Current City hall.
In the center of the square is the famous Fuente de Cibeles ‘Cibeles Fountain’, which is the first of the five mythological fountains that form the Prado Hall, commissioned by Carlos III.
Nº 5.- PLAZA MAYOR (MAYOR SQUARE OF MADRID)
The Plaza Mayor of Madrid suffered 3 frightful fires, in the last of them only the ‘House of Bakery’ was saved, which served as a model for the reconstruction of the square.
The Plaza Mayor of Madrid during 2017 commemorates its IV Centenary, being in 1617 when it began to build, 400 years ago.
Nº 4.- PUERTA DEL SOL (GATE OF THE SUN)
The Puerta del Sol is the heart of Madrid. Social meeting point in which life flows at any time of day or night.
From its beginnings in century XV, in this place have been directed some of the most important events of the history and the Spanish life.
This statue, the Statue of the Bear and the Madroño is famous for alluding to the official shield of the city of Madrid.
Also In Puerta del Sol we find the ‘Real Casa de Correos’ royal house of mail, where the locals meet to hear the chimes every new year.
Nº 3.- PALACIO REAL (ROYAL PALACE DE MADRID)
The Royal Palace and its surroundings are one of the must-see in Madrid.
The majestic building that we can contemplate today, dates from the middle of the XVIII century.
The neoclassical style clearly shows the taste for geometric and proportionate forms, typical of the architecture of enlightened despotism.
It is one of the largest palaces in the world.
It is currently open to the public as a museum.
It is surrounded by beautiful gardens (Campo de Moro, Sabatini Gardens and Gardens of the Plaza de Oriente).
From its surroundings we can enjoy spectacular sunsets.
Nº 2.- RETIRO PARK
Parque del Retiro is one of the most pleasant urban parks in the world.
It is ideal for pleasant walks, sunbathing and even paddling in the center of the city.
This park had its origin in the seventeenth century, as the second residence and place of rest Of King Philip IV. Places of recreation as peculiar as the Grand Lake of Retiro are iconic.
In this park we find other monuments whose visit is essential, such as the Crystal Palace or the curious Fountain of the Fallen Angel.
Before unveiling the number one, we offer three special mentions:
Santiago Bernabéu Stadium
Monumental Plaza Las Ventas
Basilica of San Francisco el Grande
Nº 1.- THE WALK OF ART
‘The Paseo del Arte’ brings together the masterpieces of the most important paintings in the world collected in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and the National Museum of Art Reina Sofía.
The visit to these three museums is one of the essential activities in Madrid.

WHO ARE KARA AND NATE?! - We decided to take a year off to travel the world in January 2016. Daily vlogging was not the original plan, but we quickly fell in love with it and now post a video of what we do every day! About halfway through the year, we knew we weren’t going to be ready to stop traveling in December, so now we have a new goal of visiting 100 countries before 2019! On our channel you can expect to see the best foods and adventures of every country we visit ;)

Tapas Tour & OLDEST RESTAURANT in The WORLD in Madrid Spain
On this food adventure, I went to tour the San Miguel Market in Madrid, Spain. This is a great place to visit, sampling some of the best Madrid's market food has to offer. After the market, I went to El Sur to eat gambas, which is shrimp with garlic sauce, and I had some Cuban pulled pork. That pork was my favorite dish there. For dessert, I ate churros with hot chocolate, and this place was incredibly packed, so get ready to wait in line! To end my food day, I went to one of the oldest restaurants in Spain, Botin and it's famous for its roast suckling pig!
