The citadel of Corte (nicknamed Eagle's Nest ) is a citadel of the xviii th century built around a castle of the xv th century and Museum of Corsica of 1984 in Corte in Corsica . The citadel has been listed as a historic monument since 10 August 1977. In 1419 the Count and Viceroy of Corsica Vincentello d'Istria ( vassal of King Alfonso V of Aragon ) built the castle at the top of the rock that dominates the city, in Upper Corsica halfway between Bastia and Ajaccio , with a crenellated wall and three towers, to fight the Republic of Genoa for the Kingdom of Aragon . Between 1421 and 1434 he reigns supreme over Corsica and installs the seat of his government in Corte.
In the xviii th century General of the Nation Pascal Paoli made Corte the capital of his government for the Corsican nation . In 1769 after the May 9th defeat of his Corsican troops at the Battle of Ponte-Novo against those of King Louis XV , Corsica passed under French rule . The Count de Vaux then ordered to increase the fortifications of the city by the construction of the current citadel, on the principle of fortifications and constructions of Vauban(only citadel among the six Corsican citadels to be built inland). The construction of the Padua Barracks is completed in 1776. Between 1962 and 1983 the citadel is occupied by the foreign legion ( foreign Legion training group ).
In 1984 the site is open to the public. It offers exceptional panoramic views of the Valleys of Restonica and Tavignano . The castle inside the citadel welcomes:
The Museum of Corsica (Museum of Art and History and Regional Museum of Anthropology of Corsica).
The regional fund of contemporary art of Corsica (FRACORSE)
The Center for Scientific and Technical Culture of Corsica (CCSTI)
The tourist center centru di Corsica.

CORTE, CORSICA - travel shorts
Corte was once the capital of Corsica, during the reign of the much fabled Pasquale Paoli, and the city does still hold quite a grandiose air about it - something only enhanced by the monumental mountain scenery that surrounds it. In recent years Corte could have been said to have been in something of a decline, but since the reopening of the city's university in the 1980s it has regained a thriving, cosmopolitan air, with hundreds of foreign students lured in by its growing academic reputation. Now you'll find the city a bustle of pavement cafés and bars, which are a great way to relax after a day exploring the mountains or wandering around the cragged beauty of the citadel.
The Island of Corsica, France | Bastia, Corte DAY 4 (Vlog)
The French island of Corsica is located in the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy and Southeastern coast of France. We explored the island of Corsica and its rich culture and were offered a unique look at the diverse history. The French island of Corsica is charming, wild, unique, and interesting and we had a fun couple weeks traveling all across the island. After a morning in Bastia, we hop on a train and head to Corte.

Corsica, France - Pretty Much Paradise
We rented a villa in Corsica for a week with some friends from this cool site called The Thinking Traveler. The island was incredible and pretty difficult to get to, but that's why it was so amazing. Also not many people speaking anything other than french, which is also a good sign. Pretty much just a beautiful french island for people from France in the summer.
Great times, and will definitely be going back.

Mama mia! A 4-bed designer villa in Corsica, where France meets Italy in bandit country. Mama mia! A 4-bed designer villa in Corsica, where France meets Italy in bandit country. Corsica was once France's Wild West - the land of the vendetta and the stiletto (no, not the heels). Now, it's one of the most exclusive and sought-after parts of the Mediterranean and even the bandits are friendly.
This beautiful modern property (1992) lies on the edge of a small village, 700 metres above sea-level, and enjoys uninterrupted views of the whole island, and, to the East, the sea. All the fittings are as luxurious as one could wish; marble, slate, Paris Porcelaine, double glazing, electric shutters and CCTV. A swimming pool could be built in the grounds (one third of an acre).
On the ground floor, you'll find the entrance hall, living room and dining room (with fireplace, 85m2), a top-of-the-range fitted kitchen, WC, and an outside bread oven. The master bedroom (with en suite) is on the first floor, along with two further bedrooms, a bathroom and a TV lounge. There's a guest bedroom on the second floor (with en suite), a linen room (or 5th bedroom) and a dressing room.
If you've been paying attention, you'll have worked out that that's 4 bedrooms but only 3 bathrooms. If you have English guests staying, they'll probably be able to work around this without major disagreement. If you have bandits staying, may we recommend giving them one of the en suite rooms?
The total living space is 275m2 and the property has gas-fired central heating. The nearest shops are 4km away, with more options in the pretty town of Corte 10km away. Bastia airport is about an hour away and is served by ThomsonFly and EasyJet.
