Christmas trees arrive at Buckingham Palace
Every year, three trees are placed in the Marble Hall - and a garland is fixed along the grand staircase.
More about Christmas here:
The custom of displaying Christmas trees was introduced to Britain in the late 18th by Queen Charlotte, consort of George III, although it was a yew tree rather than a fir that was used. The Christmas tree was popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the nineteenth century.

Kate Middleton and Melania Trump looked stunning in loose waves at reception at Buckingham Palace
Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge played a key part in tonight's event, as her husband, Prince William today joined a British navy crack team protecting oil tankers against hostile Iranian forces.
The Queen Elizabeth also wowed in a green dress and accessorised with a emerald green shawl, a pearl necklace and pearl earrings. She seemed in good spirits following rumours from cruel social media trolls who had speculated her death.
Melania Trump was wearing a yellow £4,700 Valentino coat to keep the British cold at bay teamed with fuchsia heels, while the president opted for a dark blue suit, white shirt and blue tie.
This is while Camilla cut an elegant figure in a red dress and black blazer with Prince Charles wearing a navy pin stripe suit.

Queen's Christmas Message 2019
Queen Elizabeth II looks back on 2019 and some of the major milestones of the year including the 50th anniversary of the moon landing and the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The Queen discusses how these monumental events started out with small steps and while the path may not always be smooth, the small steps can make a world of difference. Looking ahead to a new decade, the Queen remarked that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that lead to everlasting change.
FULL TRANSCRIPT
The Queen: As a child, I never imagined that one day a man would walk on the moon. Yet this year, we marked the fiftieth anniversary of the famous Apollo 11 mission.
NASA Command Centre: Still looking very good. You’re go. The eagle has landed.
The Queen: As those historic pictures were beamed back to Earth, millions of us sat transfixed to our television screens as we watched Neil Armstrong taking a small step for man and a giant leap for mankind. And indeed, for womankind. It's a reminder for us all. The giant leaps often start with small steps. This year, we marked another important anniversary, D-Day. On the 6th of June, 1944, some 156,000 British, Canadian and American forces landed in northern France. It was the largest ever seaborne invasion and was delayed due to bad weather. I well remember the look of concern on my father's face. He knew the secret D-Day plans, but could of course, share that burden with no one. For the seventy-fifth anniversary of that decisive battle in a true spirit of reconciliation, those who had formerly been sworn enemies came together in friendly commemorations, either side of the channel, putting past differences behind them. Such reconciliation seldom happens overnight. It takes patience and time to rebuild. Trust and progress often comes through small steps. Since the end of the Second World War, many charities, groups and organizations have worked to promote peace and unity around the world, bringing together those who have been on opposing sides. By being willing to put past differences behind us and move forward together, we honour the freedom and democracy once one for us at so a cost. The challenges many people face today may be different to those ones faced by my generation. But I have been struck by how new generations have brought a similar sense of purpose to issues such as protecting our environment and our climate. My family and I are also inspired by the men and women of our emergency services and armed forces. And at Christmas, we remember all those on duty at home and abroad who are helping those in need and keeping us and our families safe and secure. Two hundred years on from the birth of my great great grandmother, Queen Victoria, Prince Philip and I have been delighted to welcome our eighth great grandchild into our family. Of course, at the heart of the Christmas story lies the birth of a child, a seemingly small and insignificant step overlooked by many in Bethlehem. But in time, through his teaching and by his example, Jesus Christ would show the world how small steps taken in faith and in hope can overcome long held differences and deep seated divisions to bring harmony and understanding. Many of us already tried to follow in his footsteps, the path, of course, is not always smooth and may at times this year have felt quite bumpy. But small steps can make a world of difference. As Christmas dawned, church congregations around the world joined in singing, It came upon the Midnight Clear. Like many timeless carols, it speaks not just to the coming of Jesus Christ into a divided world, many years ago, but also of the relevance even today of the angel's message of peace and goodwill. It's a timely reminder of what positive things can be achieved when people set aside past differences and come together in the spirit of friendship and reconciliation. And as we all look forward to the start of a new decade, it's worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps that bring about the most lasting change. And so I wish you all a very happy Christmas.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Join William and Kate for Christmas Lunch with the Queen. The royal holiday parties are in full swing! Meghan Markle, who first attended the event last year as Prince Harry‘s fiancée, joined her new husband for the event. The mom-to-be was photographed driving into the luncheon wearing a black top with a high neckline, while her husband sported a suit as he took the drivers’ seat. Also heading to the party were Meghan’s in-laws, Prince William and Kate Middleton. William drove his family to the event, and Kate shared a smile and wave with onlookers in a bubblegum pink ensemble. Prince George, 5, and Princess Charlotte,– wearing matching outfits by Amaia, the London-based children’s wear brand that was also behind their adorable page boy and bridesmaid ensembles for Princess Eugenie’s royal wedding – once again joined in on the festivities. In fact, their nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo rode with the children in the backseat of the car. However, it’s unclear if 8-month-old Prince Louis made his debut at the annual gathering. They joined more than 50 royal family members for lunch at the palace, including the Queen’s husband of 71 years, Prince Philip. The 97-year-old royal retired from public duty last year but has continued to make appearances for family-based events such as Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie‘s weddings. The family will get together again for Christmas. Despite previous reports that Prince William and Kate would likely be spending the holiday with the Middleton family in Bucklebury, the couple will be joining the rest of the royals, including Harry and Meghan, in Norfolk for Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham. Claims have swirled about tension between brothers William and Harry and their wives, Kate and Meghan. A source tells PEOPLE that last year, the couples enjoyed a memorable first Christmas together, when Meghan made her debut walk to church with the royal family on Christmas Day. “They really loved Christmas and all had a wonderful time,” the source says. “I think the two women got on — they are definitely not best friends, but it was a really special time for them all to spend together.”

Kate Middleton and hubby Prince William were pictured arriving seperately moments later. The couple were joined by their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The outing comes amid reports of a row between the two Duchesses. Other members of the royals were pictured arriving earlier today. The duchesses appeared to be in good spiritis, despite being the subject of growing speculation they have been involved in a rumoured rift. 11 Small Things the Queen Does Every Day
If you think that her royal duties keep the Queen sitting all day long, let me correct you. Throughout her life, she’s traveled more than any other ruler in the world. SUMMARY:
- Biologists say that in no small measure, the genes you have influence your life span. There’s no denying that the Queen is pretty lucky on that front.
- Elizabeth II married Prince Philip in 1947. Their love story’s been going on for over 70 years now!
- As her former spokesperson Dickie Arbiter says, “she can get angry if something doesn't go right, but as it's often out of her control there is no point becoming stressed about it.
- Though the Queen can order absolutely anything, she prefers to eat simple and healthy meals. She’s all about self-discipline when it comes to food; she actually controls all the recipes herself.
- Let’s be honest, sometimes it seems like there’s no time or need to go to the doctor if you’re feeling ok. But that’s not the case for Her Majesty.
- Unlike many people of her generation who choose to stay away from modern technology, she’s curious about it.
- The Queen’s everyday schedule is pretty rough, and she’d never accomplish so many things during the day if she didn’t have a good night’s rest.
- Another thing we could all learn from Queen Elizabeth is her devotion to charity. She’s a patron for over 600 organizations of all kinds, including hospitals, schools, art institutions, and sports associations.
- One of the Queen’s secrets to a long and healthy life is drinking tea.
- Elizabeth II definitely knows how to keep a cool head most of the time. But she also doesn’t forget that enjoying yourself is very important for feeling good.
