Japan PM Abe Meets With Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Zayed On Trip to Diffuse Gulf Tensions
Footage provided by Emirates News Agency shows Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Abu Dhabi, Monday, January 13, as part of a Middle Eastern tour aimed at defusing tensions in the Gulf.
—————————
READ MORE: Abe, who flew in from Saudi Arabia, was welcomed by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed at Qasr al-Watan.
He is expected to travel to Oman after his visit to the United Arab Emirates.
A Japanese foreign ministry official said Monday Japan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE should work together to de-escalate the tense situation in the Gulf, relaying comments by Abe.
The official said Japan has a strong relationship with both the United States and Iran and was in a position to play a diplomatic role in defusing regional tensions.
Abe's visit coincides with the deployment of Japanese warships to the region and comes amidst heightened security tensions following the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani by a U.S. air strike on January 3.
A flurry of diplomatic visits and meetings crisscrossing the Persian Gulf have driven urgent efforts in recent days to defuse the possibility of all-out war after the U.S. killed Iran's top military commander.
Global leaders and top diplomats are repeating the mantra of de-escalation and dialogue, yet none have publicly laid out a path to achieving either.
The United States and Iran have said they do not want war, but fears have grown that the crisis could spin out of Tehran's or Washington's control. Tensions have careened from one crisis to another since U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from Iran's nuclear deal with world powers. (Reuters/AP)

JAPAN: TOKYO: STOCK EXCHANGE PREPARES FOR EURO CURRENCY
Jap/Eng/Nat
The great European single currency experiment starts on Friday, and dealers on the Tokyo Foreign Exchange are busy with preparations for the first day of trading.
The world's markets are closed for the New Year holidays and will reopen on Monday the 4th January.
Due to their time zone, traders in Asia will be the first to deal in the new currency.
Traders in Japan - the worlds second largest economic power - are looking forward to the birth of the new currency.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
Tokyo has been always reacting against US dollars. However, from now onwards, we can react against Euro. That means that we can choose one of two currencies. It certainly widens choice, but at the same time, Japanese banks will be required to study harder. We are also concerned of the relative decline of yen status.
SUPER CAPTION:Hiroyuki Fukushima, Manager, Spot Euro Yen section, Tokyo Forex Co.
With the introduction of Euro, the single European currency, many in Japan expect to see the beginnings of a new economic super state - one with a GDP the same size as that of the United States.
The world's third largest car maker, Toyota, is aiming high at this new target.
As the domestic demand plunges sharply amidst the worst recession since the second world war, Toyota has to heavily rely on its sales from abroad.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
What we would like to see is the stability of a currency rather than which way it should go and once the stability - which I believe will be achieved - is established then it'll be much easier for us to do business.
SUPER CAPTION: Yoshimi Inaba, Director, Member of the Board, Europe and Africa Division, Toyota Motor Corporation
The European automobile market has seen drastic restructuring.
Non-European car makers without a distribution network will find it hard to become a significant player.
Currently, Toyota occupies only 3% share of sales in Europe but is determined to improve its standing - deciding to invest 8-hundred and eighty-1 (m) million U-S dollars in a second European plant.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Of course Europe as a single consolidated market is the biggest in the world. So there's no doubt its one of the most important market for us and that's why we have been committing ourselves to European market by establishing a second plant and by doing a much more proper job in Europe.
SUPER CAPTION:Yoshimi Inaba
Individuals will also benefit from the launch of the Euro.
1999 will see the launch of the Euro travellers cheque, giving Tourists less hastle over which of the 11 old currencies to take when travelling to Europe.
SOUNDBITE:(English)
The Euro travellers cheque gives them that added convenience and added benefit, obviously of allowing them now to not have the concern and worry of having to stock a variety of currency travellers cheques. Having the one traveller's cheque to allow them to conduct their spending in a variety of European destinations.
SUPER CAPTION: Gordon Price, Development Manager, Thomas Cook Group Ltd.
More than 1.7 (m) million Japanese tourists travel to Europe every year.
And the Euro, and the Euro travellers cheque, is expected to make life much easier.

STORYLINE
Toyota is considering a recall of its hot-selling Corolla subcompact after complaints about power steering problems, another blow to the world''s largest automaker already reeling from a string of recalls for safety problems.
Company President Akio Toyoda, meanwhile, said he won''t be attending the US congressional hearing on the automaker''s safety lapses, entrusting the job to US-based executives, though he did say he would consider appearing if summoned.
He said he wanted to focus his energies on improving quality worldwide.
They summoned Mr (Yoshi) Inaba, the US Toyota President, thinking he would be the most appropriate person to speak there. I would like to give my utmost support from the headquarters in order for president Inaba to handle it well, Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda told reporters.
He said Inaba, who heads Toyota Motor Corp.''s North American unit, was more familiar with the US situation and was the best executive to deal with the hearing.
Toyoda said he was still making plans to go to the US and dates have yet to be set.
But in an alarming disclosure that could widen Toyota''s recall crisis, the Toyota executive in charge of quality controls, Shinichi Sasaki, said Toyota was taking seriously the complaints about power-steering problems in the Corolla, the world''s best-selling car.
Sasaki said drivers may feel as though they were losing control over the steering, but it was unclear why.
He mentioned problems with the braking system or tires as possible underlying causes of the steering problem.
Regarding the analytical investigation of the case, we will obtain more information and will start working on it.
There have been fewer than 100 complaints, the automaker says.
Speaking at Toyota''s Tokyo office, Sasaki said it was still uncertain if a Corolla recall would be necessary but the automaker is considering one.
The number of affected vehicles is unclear, he said.
If this will be related to a safety matter, of course we will recall, Sasaki said.
The company was putting customers first in a renewed effort to salvage its reputation and would do whatever is necessary if a fix is needed, he said.
Toyota has recalled 8.5 (m) million vehicles globally during the past four months because of problems with sticking gas pedals, floor mats trapping accelerators and faulty brake programming.

DAY BREAK 06:00 President Park arrives in UAE on third stop of Middle East tour
DAY BREAK 06:00
Coming up on this Thursday edition of Day Break,... President Park Geun-hye touches down in the UAE on the third stop of her four-nation Middle East tour. In Saudi Arabia, the president calls for greater energy cooperation with Riyadh.
In a further sign of their strained ties, Japan′s foreign ministry revises its website to strip down the explanation of the two countries′ relationship.
Plus,... a security intelligence center warns North Korea is highly likely to engage in more provocations during South Korea′s ongoing joint military drills with the United States. Day Break begins now.
Hello.... and thanks for joining us.
To our viewers around the world, it′s 6 a.m. on Thursday, March fifth here in Seoul.
I′m Mark Broome... and you′re tuned into Day Break.
Title: President Park arrives in UAE on third stop of Middle East tour
Our top story this morning...
President Park Geun-hye has arrived in the UAE, the third leg of her four-nation Middle East tour.
Before leaving Riyadh on Wednesday, the Korean leader laid out her vision for the future of Korea-Saudi Arabia economic cooperation... which mostly involved energy.
Our Choi You-sun , who′s traveling with the president, files this report from Abu Dhabi.
This is President Park′s second visit to Abu Dhabi in less than a year. She was here last May to mark an installation of a Korean-made nuclear reactor built under a 2009 bilateral agreement.
The reactor at the Barakah nuclear plant site, some 3-hundred kilometers west of Abu Dhabi, is part of a 19-billion-dollar contract Korea won to build four nuclear plants in the Gulf nation by the year 2020.
It′s Korea′s first-ever nuclear reactor export deal.
President Park′s previous trip had to be brief, because it came only one month after the Sewol-ho ferry disaster.
This time, she plans to carry out her diplomacy in full force, to strengthen Seoul′s cooperation with Abu Dhabi in nuclear energy, infrastructure, and health care.
In Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, President Park told Korean and Saudi business leaders that nuclear and renewable energy are the answer to power supply in the future.
She urged both sides to initiate joint ventures in search of new energy sources, which will then place Korea and Saudi Arabia as the driving force of future energy industries.
Matching Saudi Arabia′s abundance in capital with Korea′s technological and industrial competitive edge is another one of President Park′s visions for bilateral cooperation.
In line with this, the president met Kingdom Holding Company CEO Alwaleed Bin Talal, considered the Warren Buffett of the Middle East, to discuss the investment firm′s reported interest in Korea′s cultural contents.
