Welcome to Inagua Island!
An eco-tourism haven and home to 80,000 flamingos, Inagua is a special retreat for bird watching, fishing, diving, snorkeling and other water related activities. Inagua is actually two separate islands --Great Inagua, ideal for travelers because of the Inagua National Park and its exotic birds that roam free, and Little Inagua, a protected habitat for endangered sea turtles -- and together they form the most southern tip of The Bahamas.

Our last Mission Panamania episode left us dropping the hook in George Town Bahamas. Today we pick back up with a mosquito hell hike, an impromptu cruiser beach party and before you know it' we're spearing some fish with new friends. George Town is always a great place to hang out. Of course time is not on our side with hurricane season nipping at our heels.
We're setting sail from George Town to a little visited island called Great Inagua. It's our longest sail yet and we're totally stoked to hit the deep water of the Bahamas. So grab a sundowner and join us as we continue our sail south towards Panama.

Interesting Facts About The Bahamas
You already know that the Bahamas is the prime location for tropical vacations. But how many of the following did you not know already?

6. Flamingos
And on the other hand, the flamingo is the national bird of the Bahamas, but you could’ve guessed that. More specifically, its is the West Indian Flamingo that is their national bird. These Caribbean flamingos are some of the largest flamingoes in the world and are pink as a result of their diet that consists largely of creatures like shrimp. It is for their orange and pink feathers that made flamingos the target of a lot of hunting--for fashion reasons. There are now bans placed by the Bahamas National Trust that were established to protect the flamingo population which, due to hunting, was once dwindling. However, the population has sustained itself and grown, thankfully, with the Bahamian island of Inagua having the second largest population of flamingos in the world.
5. Big Game Fishing Capital
The district of Bimini is known as the Big Game Fishing Capital of the Bahamas. Bimini is made up of 3 islands, East Bimini, North Bimini, and South Bimini. Big game fishing, for those of you who are not familiar with the activity, is a type of recreational fishing that game fisherman take part in, usually to catch bigger fish like marlins--which as you know are abundant in the area. Bimini is known to be one of the most significant locations in which this sport is popular and it is of course a prime location for such an activity.
4. Atlantis Paradise Island
If there was anywhere to have an ocean themed resort that completely fit the environment, then it has to be the Bahamas. Even though other Atlantis themed resorts from the same company exist in other parts of the world, the location in the Bahamas is one of the most visited and well known. Atlantis is one of the top rated resorts in the world and is located on Paradise Island (not the one in the Wonder Woman comics, unfortunately. But still, there’s fun to be had). The resort covers over a 141 acre waterscape and opened in the year 1998. There’s both fresh and saltwater lagoons, water slides, river rides, marine habitats, and of course its share of pools. One of the more recognizable is the Mayan Temple slides, which reaches up to 6 stories high.
3. Rich Country
The Bahamas is said to be the richest country in the Caribbean region and is one of the richest countries in the Americas. This groups of islands in the Atlantic is 3rd richest country in the New World after the nations of the United States and Canada. They have a GDP per capita of $21,280, meaning that the income here is higher, much higher when compared to the neighboring countries. Lots of this is attributed to the high traffic of tourism that the area receives due to its tropical and relaxing and fun reputation for visitors. Another large sector of financial income stems from agriculture, with 80% of the food supply being imported and with an abundance of crops for sugarcane, lemons, limes, grapefruits, okra, and even more common foods like cucumbers, oranges and onions, it’s no wonder they make so much money.
2. Spaceship Debris
Of all the things you thought you’d find on the beaches of the Bahamas, you didn’t think space debris would be one of them, did you? Seen here on the shores near Elbow Cay on Great Abaco Island is a piece of the Space X rocket launch from the Deep Space Climate Observatory launch. Among the vacationers to find the debris were 3 business executives who happened to be on the beach when the parts washed up on shore and spotted. What you see here is a fairing, just 1 of the 2 that were a part of the launch. What’s more there was a Go Pro camera attached.
Pirate Haven
We’ve all heard and most of us have watched the Pirates of the Caribbean movie. So it makes sense that the largest city and capital of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, Nassau, was once a stronghold for pirates during the 18th century. Now, people use this city as a stopover for cruise ships, but once upon a time, pirate ships lined those docks. New Providence, the island Nassau is located on, was known as a pirate haven and was a safe harbor for those seafarers. Pirates of Nassau is actually a museum located in the city that documents the history of pirate activity where visitors can see the various exhibits and even a glance at a pirate ship replica.

Nikki has a very short Bahamas Bucket list and seeing the underwater sculpture garden is on the top of it. Specifically she wants to see Atlas, the worlds largest underwater sculpture (worlds largest for now).
We're anchoring at JAWS beach in the West Bay of New Providence island. This island is the most populated island of all of the Bahamas so of course we'll have to re-provision before heading off. We've heard about this fresh grocery store in Nassau and we have to visit. We meet a couple new friends, do some snorkeling and have an all around jam packed 3 days before a big blow comes to push us out of paradise...but I guess that's life on the water.
Hope you enjoy, remember to give us a thumbs up and leave a comment, it really helps our channel grow.
Hugs from the sea,

Sandy Cay
The islands of The Bahamas are home to more species of rare rock iguanas than any other Caribbean island nation and on your next trip to the Long Island chain you can see them thriving in their natural habitat.
Most of these Bahamian rock iguanas populate the dry scrub forests and beaches of small desolate islands, including nearby Sandy Cay. Each of these species is unique to the island which they inhabit, varying their colours solid gray to a kaleidoscope of green, orange, red, blue, yellow and pink.
