Inami Woodcarvings are produced in Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture mainly in the form of transoms, decorative objects, and single-leaf screens.
They are usually made of Japanese camphor, paulownia, or zelkova wood, and carved with landscapes, flowers and birds, human figures, animals or dragons.
Inami Woodcarvings are distinguished by the exceptional woodcarving skills producing three-dimensional works filled with life and movement.
In recent years, a good many Inami woodcarvers have combined their dragon or lion motifs with the modern electric guitar; Inami Woodcarvings are now known as a traditional craft continuously taking on new challenges.
► Types of Inami Carving
1. Ranma (欄間)
The ranma or transom is an element in a Japanese structures washitsu room. Its purpose is for lighting, ventilation and decoration. In the photo, the piece above the open sliding door in the center is the ranma. In actuality, it is an element that is essential to a washitsu style room more so because it exudes the prestige of the washitsu room or the building itself rather than for its practical reasons of lighting and ventilation.
2. Tsuitate (衝立)
Tsuitate refers to a partition used in a Japanese room. It can be moved around. When it is placed in a room, you can immediately divide the space into 2 smaller rooms. It helps make practical use of widely open washitsu rooms. Similar to the ranma, the tsuitate is often decorated with intricate designs. It is similar in function to a simplified sliding door (fusuma).

A delightful visit to see old friends. One of them Oya san, who granted a request to do a video interview in the hospital as he was being treated for cancer. Other interviews included Haruki Fujii, a well known carver and artist of Bronze in Japan and others including young women who now for the first time in over 500 years are allowed to carve for the temples and homes pieces.
Inami International Wooden Sculpture Camp 2015 [Art & Culture Event/ Festival]
Inami International Wooden Sculpture Camp, called Camp, has been held in the Inami area of Nanto City every four years since 1991, with the theme of To Bring the World Together through Wooden Sculpture. Throughout Camp, sculptors invited from around the world complete their wooden sculpture works in open air work places, so that not only sculptors but also all visitors can communicate with one another. This program makes it possible to promote international understanding and cultural exchange, as each work represents the national traits, traditions, and culture of each country. The beginning log, made of camphorwood, is about 1.8 meters (approx. 6 ft.) long and 50 centimeters (approx. 20 in.) in diameter. Along with the sculpting, many other activities also take place in collaboration with Camp, including a photo contest and an international cooking event. Camp 2015 took place for 13 days from August 18th through the 30th at Zuisen-ji, the largest temple in the Hokuriku region, built in 1390.

｢木彫りを通して世界をつなぐ｣ をテーマに1991年にスタートしてから４年ごとに開催。世界中からの招待作家が木彫刻作品を野外で公開制作し、各国の民族・伝統・文化に触れ合い、国際理解を深めることを目的としています。
